Project Goal
The report is prepared for the Utopimed for designing a network for covering all the
medical centers located in the capital city of Australia. The main goal of development of the
network is to enable secure transferring of patient data between the medical centers such that
store them securely in the datacenter. The development of the network would help the doctors
and the patients to view their reports and diagnosis report from remote location and increase the
efficiency of the treatment process. Thus the time needed for getting the details of the patients
can be reduced and help the medical representatives to provide quick diagnosis.
Project Scope
The development of the enterprise network would help in integration of different system
and combine the communication strategy and protocols for improving the performance of the
medical centers. The systems connected in the network would communicate and retrieve
information form the data center such that it can be used for diagnosis of the patient health
condition and provide faster response. The systems are needed to provide faster, secure and
reliable performance and is needed to support different platform for sending and receiving data.
The enterprise network solution can reduce the communication gap between the doctors and the
patients and help in delivering faster and efficient service to its patients.
Business Goals and Constraints
The goals for the development of network for Utopimed medical center are given below:
ï‚· To improve the consolidation of general performance of current Utopimed network
ï‚· To improve the network capacity and keep provision for future scalability
ï‚· To improve fault tolerance, security and efficiency of the network

COIT20264 NETWORK DESIGN
ï‚· To improve the response time of the network
ï‚· To allow different types of network device to be connected with the network
The development of the backend network is needed to fulfill the availability, scalability,
manageability, security and affordability needs of the medical center. The requirement is needed
to be documented as the service level agreement and tradeoffs are needed to be made during the
phase of logical network design for the selection of media and network device selection
(Coutinho et al. 2016). A wireless connection is needed to be provided to the patient residing in
the waiting area for connecting their mobile device and access the internet or medical certificates
issued by the doctor.
The constraint for the development of the network are given below:
ï‚· The selection of appropriate network technology and skills of the development team
causing bottleneck
ï‚· Uncertainty in future growth of the medical center and accommodation of the changes in
needs
ï‚· Bottleneck in bandwidth due to ISP and support of VoIP and VPN by the service
provider
The constraint for the development of the network is the changes in requirement and the
bandwidth bottleneck for transferring large volumes of data between the different medical
centers. The creation of backup servers and redundantly storing the files and information can
also incur huge cost for the network.
Technical Goals and Tradeoffs
The following are the technical goals for the development of the network:
Document Page
5
COIT20264 NETWORK DESIGN
ï‚· Reliability of the network hardware devices and use of redundant link for reducing
network downtime
ï‚· Minimizing network response time and reduce packet loss and congestion in the network
ï‚· The accessibility of the network for the unauthorized user and devices is needed to be
restricted.
The main technical goal for the development of the network infrastructure is to connect
all the medical centers and have a centralized control over the centers. A structured design
process is needed to be followed such that data generated from the medical equipment’s such as
X Ray, CT Scan Machine, MRI, Ultrasound can be stored in the data center and accessed by the
patient and the doctors for diagnosing the health condition of the patient.
The following are the list of tradeoffs identified for the development of the network:
ï‚· Developing QoS policy for monitoring data packet and its source
ï‚· DMZ zone creation and maintaining access of the users to the servers
ï‚· Separating the network by subnetting IP address for different departments.
For the development of the network the access of the enterprise network is needed to be
managed such that the patient data and information are kept secured in the data centers. The
changes in the access needs is needed to be restricted and the flow of traffic should be
continuously monitored for eliminating the vulnerabilities in the network.

Addressing and Naming Model
The management of the hardware is important with and each of the device is needed to be
uniquely identified such that it can be easily troubleshoot. A flat address structure is followed for
the network device where the IP address and the MAC address of the device are used for
identifying the device and administer them. The flat address structure cannot provide details of
the location of the device and thus they are named with the location and followed by the device
name such that it can be easily identified for administering.
Explanation and Justification of Network Design
The network design prepared for Utopimed medical center is developed following the top
down network methodology. The simple network design principles are followed for the
development of the network for meeting the current needs of the medical center and eliminating
the potential bottleneck. The computes of each of the chamber is needed to transmit data
wirelessly to the patient and thus the wireless access point is installed in the reception area that
would serve the needs of the patients. For each of the department separate switch is used and it is
needed to be configured as VLAN for management of the access of the users. At the entry and
exit point a physical firewall is installed that would help to restrict the unknown user to access
the intranet of the organization.
Routing and Switching protocols and Security Mechanism
A separate router is used for management of access of each of the medical center and
separate area is needed to be defined for each of the medical center using the OSPF routing
protocol. The integrity of the routing protocol with the other network device used for the
development of the network framework is needed to be managed such that the availability,

scalability and integrity of the network is maintained (Ayers et al. 2018). The switch is needed to
be configured with VTP server version 2 such that there is automatic sharing of VLAN
information between the other switches configured as VTP client.
