Introduction
This article emphasizes on the role of communication in organizations. To
understand the business of any existing entity in hospitality industry of Australia, I
have interviewed the owner and the staffs of a café in Melbourne suburb named
One Cup. Main objective of this interview is to know the organization with its owner,
the background of such business, choice of location, employee strength and major
constraints of this business the owner faces during his business operation. This café
is of ownership status and serves the target audience of office people with different
types of fast foods and beverages for their lunch needs. The employee strength of
this café is two. This café is of medium size and runs on self-service system. The
café has total annual turnover of 150,000 AUD. The name of the owner is Michael
and the staffs’ names are Martha and John. Both the employees are engaged in
production of foods and the owner is supervising the operation with cash handling.
As the business uses disposable serving plates and glasses, there is no need of
washing system.
Methodology
While planning for this interview, I have considered Information theory of
communication. This theory is based on the basic mathematical theory of
communication as evolved by Shannon and Weaver (1949). (Al-Fedaghi, 2012) This
theory of communication is based on information as the process of communicating
with others to ensure gathering the views of individual by other through meaningful
transmission of any message for whom it is meant. This theory, also, endorses the
concept of transmission of signals by written communication, verbal exchange of
words or gestural body movements, etc. (Mishra, 2017) By applying this theory of
communication, I have selected the interviewees through my personal search to
meet my queries about hospitality industry in Melbourne. The technique applied for
this interview is verbal exchange of communication to emphasize on some key
factors of this business. The use of persuasion theory is applied here for this
interview by adopting reciprocity norms. The interview is based on oral questions
placed before the interviewees and the same is reciprocated by the interviewee to
make me understand different aspects of café business in respect of this specific
café. (Vila, 2014) Apart from information theory of communication and persuasion
theory, I have applied transmission of knowledge concept of communication as
evolved by Alagappa University study notes for communication. (Joshi et al., 2018)
