Introduction
This paper is containing an argumentative discussion about a global issue or challenge
of poverty which is majorly affecting development of India. In the year 2018,
World Poverty Clock (WPC), reported that at least 5.3% or 70.6 million Indian public is
living within extreme poverty conditions compared to 87 million or 44% Nigerians.
Furthermore, recent data is suggesting that till the end of 2019, Nigeria as well as Congo will
surpass India in terms of whole population earning below $1.9 per day. In this way, this
discussion is majorly arguing that poverty being a severe social issue affecting Indian
development at a large scale (Kannan, 2017). However, the present condition of poverty in
contrast of proposed policies and schemes created by the Indian Govt. is clearly indicating
that poverty will be no more the reason behind the obstructed growth of India. In this way,
this discussion will contain an annotated bibliography, thesis statement along with a topic
sentence section for concluding the main findings.

economy has been much applauded. However, the Indian growth has made its way to the

assessment of ‘complete growth’, the influence of neo-liberal policies over employment,
poverty as well as inequality is considerable within a growth context. In addition, the study
critiqued the market-friendly economic transformation for the poor people as well as
proposed ways to reduce poverty and deprivation as well. In this journal, the author used an
exhaustive data through the formal as well as informal sectors for creating a profile of
the common man. In this way, author advocated the requirement for an extensive-based
growth as well as development strategy which can alone address the multi-directional social

ingestion expenditure data of the NSS (National Sample Survey) in the year 2005, poverty
impacts over Indian development can be easily calculated. The paper estimated the size of
aged poor community and hence tested the hypotheses which elderly residents of India
compared to those non-elderly residents of India. Thus, authors of this article presented
poverty as a challenge for developing the nation within an international environment and
highlighted the problem majorly within the elderly community of India. This paper has
suggested that poverty assessments are majorly derived under 3 important scenarios. Findings
of the discussion have found the results that on an average 18 million old aged people within
India are living underneath the poverty line it means that global issue of poverty is also
affecting the nation India. In this way, on the basis of the findings, we recommend that the
oldness or age dimension must be assimilated into social policies for especially an evidence
based planning of the overall development (Srivastava & Mohanty, 2012).

As per (Alkire & Seth, 2015), India has been witnessed with a great economic
development since the era 1980. In this context, authors of this article stated that an assured
reduction within monetary poverty, especially within poorer states has been observed.
However, the global issue of poverty is having multiple dimensions. In addition, the paper
thoroughly analysed the modification within multi-dimensional poverty within the country
India amid years 1999 and 2006. The paper has found a strong reduction into national poverty
and it’s every dimension, however the reduction has not been stable across castes, regions or
religions (Alkire & Seth, 2015).
Thesis statement
This argument is clearly stating that global challenge of poverty is apparently
affecting the development in India yet the influence of poverty over overall development of
India is declining for upcoming future.

 The declining negative effect of poverty over Indian development can be seen with
rise of Indian economy as an emerging power within the world (Kohli, 2012).
 The essay argument can be supported with the less number of Indian people lies
below the poverty line in last 5 years.
 Indian Govt. is working for their total development with the help of using measures to
reduce poverty which can be seen by its GDP growth graph.
 The population suffering from unemployment, mal-nutrition, and other chronic social
health issues is decreasing in number during last decade (Kannan, 2017).

India is rising as an emerging economy and leaving other countries being in terms of
factors like GDP growth, income, wages, interest rates, trade balance, inflation index,
currency strength, corporate profits, un-employment rate, variations in GDP as well as CPI
value (Alkire & Seth, 2015). In this way, the recent data in terms of above mentioned factors
of national growth is depicting that poverty is undoubtedly affecting the development of India
however the degree of negative influence of poverty is declining as the Govt. is effectively
working in the direction of addressing this global issue while taking it as a huge challenge for
the future growth within the international market (Srivastava & Mohanty, 2012).
