 Communication is the act of giving receiving and sharing information which can be in oral or
written form. The purpose of communication is to inform express imagine influence and to meet
social expectations which can be reflected in the communication itself.
 This PPT who will outline the concepts of communication different types of communication and
its features. The purpose of this PPT is to determine various communication barriers which can be
faced by companies and will outline some strategies that can be helpful in overcoming such
barriers.

COMMUNICATION
 Communication is the process of
imparting or exchanging information
by speaking writing all by using other
mediums to convey or share ideas and
opinions.
 In simple words, it can be stated that
communication is the process by which
knowledge or information can be
shared form one place to another which
can involve individuals or groups.

FEATURES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF
COMMUNICATION
 Communication is the approach of
transferring information from one
place, person or group to another.
There are different types of
communication, some of the types of
communication and their features are
further discussed below:

 Nonverbal communication- Nonverbal communication is the type of communication where facial
expressions, gestures and paralinguistic approaches are used. The characteristics/ features of non-verbal
communication are pitch, volume, rate, quality and intonation.
 Verbal communication- verbal communication involves face to face or public interaction which allows
communicator to exchange ideas back and forth freely.
 Oral communication allows an individual to express emotions, ideas and feelings and allows people to
share knowledge and traditions as well and builds self-esteem. The characteristic of oral communication
is flexible, offers immediate feedback, offers opportunity for correction, dependence on listening and can
also bring intercultural barriers.
 Written communication, the need of communication is to transfer a certain level of knowledge or
information.

 Formal communication- In this mode of communication the
information or the knowledge is shared from one place to another
through various proper channels/routes. It can be also called as
official communication as is mostly used in offices/ business/
formal meetings, etc.
 Informal communication- In this mode of communication there is
no formal methods involve to communicate. It is also called as the
grapevine communication, as the flow of information is not
channelized in any particular direction.

BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION
Barriers to communication can hinder the efficiency and clarity of communication which will lead
to ineffective communication and inability to share right information at right time. Some of the
barriers to communication are explained below:

IN HEATH AND SOCIAL CARE SETTING
The health and social care setting in UK is wide and
comprises of different types of service users. There are
various communication theories which can be
implemented in health and social care sector. According
to Abraham Maslow, the theories of communication
which can be implemented are further listed below:

 Humanistic theory of communication- In this theory
according to Abraham Maslow, the individuals in the health
and social care are somewhere very sensitive to everything,
to communicate with them a more human approach is needed
as per the individuals demands.
 Behaviorist theory of communication – The behaviorist
theory explains that the
 Cognitive theory of communication – Cognitive theory is
very direct, where A. Maslow explains that the
communication should be done as per the need of the person,
in sense, in a manner such that the individual can understand
or as the situation demands.

 Social theory of communication – Here it is explained that individuals communicate to each other
as per the environment allows them and socializes, make connections which allows them to
communicate in their own manner.
 Psychoanalytical theory of communication – As per this theory of communication, the mental
state of the individual is involved to communicate with the individual.

From the PPT, it can be concluded that communication is the approach of sharing and
transferring all required information through which the flow of information can be maintained.
An effective communication can be helpful in building trust, resolving conflicts easily,
promoting innovation and enhancing the performance and productivity.
