2017The facts of the reportThis paper is a report on an interview conducted on John Hills, a respondent found to have hadexperience in serving in the hotel industry for more than ten years. Mr. Hills has been able towork both in Australia and China and has served in different positions in the two countries i.e.the customer care, procurement and operations department during different periods of his servicein the hotels. In his service, Hills has different experiences relating to different aspects in the twocountries that he served in. The interview was carried out by meeting with Mr. Hills on face toface on 8th October 2017.It is a report aimed to discuss various aspects of the hotel industry asone of the business sectors based on John’s experience.Comparisons of the hotel industry in the two countries (Australia and china)The comparisons to find the differences and similarities between the hotel industries in the twocountries were based on the findings after interviewing John Hills. The analysis was done interms of political and economic influence on the hotel industry, human resource management, customers and ethics in hotel industries of the two countries. The following is a report discussingon the findings according to the interview1. Human resource management.Human resource management is a wide term that is used to refer to aspects such as; employmentstandards, occupational health and safety, and human rights .According to the interview, it wasevident that Hills had different experience on this aspect in the two countries. According to myinterviewee, Australia has a higher standard in human resource management compared China(McManus, 2013). This is because there are laws and regulations that are clearly stated to governemployers and different big hotels on how to treat and deal with their employees. There areseveral provisions such as leave periods, public holidays for the employees and timely notices ofemployment termination to ensure that the employees is ready to quit the job with minimumadverse effects on him or her. Concerning occupational health in Australia, regulations also areput in place to protect the employees safety .For instance, employers are required to compensatetheir employees in case of any damage be it a loss or physical damage. There are penalties alsofor the employees who mistreat their workers. The hotel industries in Australia also providework safety to their workers by providing a conducive working environment free from noise andany other hazards. Finally in terms of human rights, there are so many organizations bothgovernmental and non-governmental that advocate for human rights in the country. On the otherhand, according to the interview, employment standards in China are very poor. People are justdiscontinued from work without any notice; there is no occupational safety in that people sufferfrom occupation diseases, death and damage. There are very few human rights activists in thecountry and therefore in general, human resource management in hotel industry in china is verypoor.

2. CustomersA comparison of hotel customers in both countries indicated that; in similarities, both countriesdepended on both domestic and international tourists as their customers. The slight differencenoted was that unlike Australia which mainly depended on international visitors, China residentsare more affluent and therefore most of them acted as domestic tourists. The interview alsoindicated a better customer care services in China compared to Australia.3. EthicsEthics is a term used to explain issues such as bribery, and honesty in sales and advertisements.Starting with Mr. Hills’ experience in Australia, the interview indicated that honesty level in thehotel industry because the country has set up many regulations in regards to adverts and sales. An example is the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) meant to protect all the consumers fromharmful adverts and sales of products. This makes it possible to attain high customer satisfaction.China on the other hand is still not appealing in terms of bribery and honesty in its hotel industry.According to his experience, Hills noted that there were many incidences of both passive andactive bribery and dishonest reported by the customers to various hotels in the country.4. Political effect on hotel industryAccording to the interview, it was found out that the political environment and its changesfavored hotel industry in Australia .Due it good diplomatic relationship with the rest of theworld, Australia receives many international arrivals hence boosting the hotel industry .Residentsalso in the Diaspora normally travel back home during holidays. Unlike Australia, China’spolitical changes have adversely affected the industry (Wang, 2017). Tsai, the president cut tieswith countries such as Taiwan, Korea and Vietnam and this ended up affecting hotel industry inthe country negatively. (Shi, 2012) 5. Economic effects on the hotel industryAccording to Mr. Hill, hotel industry growth in Australia is hindered by various economicgrowth barriers such as high interest rates, high penalty rates and fees charged on bankingtransactions and services. This therefore bars a lot of both the locals and the international guestsfrom utilizing most of the services and goods offered by the hotels. Contrary to this, China’seconomy is growing fast and in favor of the hotel industry .In China, the per capita income isincreasing and the interest rates are fairer .The favorable rates therefore attract many people tohotel services and this has been the reason for the recent rapid growth of the hotel industry inChina. (Shen, 2016).
