Importance of Nursing Teamwork in Complex Care

Introduction:
Contemporary healthcare industry is usually built around proper multidisciplinary
approach to effective patient care. Nurses usually work closely alongside the team of
healthcare professionals and the healthcare specialists for provision of well-organized and
comprehensive care. Importance of teamwork pertaining to the nursing background lies in the
fact that it facilitates effective communication along with the promotion of positive outcomes
of the patient. Cardiac arrest usually occurs when there is cessation of umping of blood
around the body (Wong et al., 2015). This happens mainly with patients where the electrical
signals to the heart is disrupted lading to ultimate collapse of the person and reduced
breathing. Leadership skills and effective teamwork is important in healthcare for patients
suffering from cardiac arrest. Proper teamwork and effective management is required for the
patients suffering from cardiac arrest because there are decreasing admissions in healthcare
institutions, reduced mortality and morbidity along with the necessity of the quality of care in
the life of heart failure patient. In the following task a media annotation would be constructed
on the base of the case study where the patients suffering from cardiac arrest. Moreover, it
highlights the importance of nursing and effective teamwork among the healthcare
professionals for an effective nursing care and management.
Discussion:
As the video starts, it was seen that the patient was having difficulty related to her
health condition and she was found breathing heavily. When the nurse entered, the patient
complaint that she is having difficulty in breathing, her chest is feeling tight and she tried to
use her inhaler but it did not work. The nurse then calls for her rest of the team of help. The
patient went through some surgery and was on rest, she did not have any previous history of
asthma. As the patient faints due to shortness of breath, the nursing team started providing

her with compression. The nurse then provides her with 1mg of Epidural and was delivered
with normal saline and shock was also delivered. After 2 minutes of duration, the pulse rate
was checked and the compression giver was switched. The whole process took place for three
time and at the end of which the pulse was observed in the patient. Later the hypothermia
protocol was initiated (YouTube, 2019).
The video highlights the teamwork and the coordination among the nurses which is
one of the effective and essential factor for providing a better nursing care to a patient. A
nursing team must consist of knowledge and abilities such as technical skills, communication,
previous experience, and leadership qualities which influences the course of accomplishment
while providing a better nursing care. The nurses provide the patient with Thoracic epidural
analgesia as she has gone through cardiac surgery. The Thoracic epidural analgesia is found
to produce cardiac sympathectomy which will ultimately lead towards the conditions minimal
humoral, stable hemodynamic, homeostatic alterations, metabolic and immunosuppression
(Rice et al., 2015). The cardiac arrest faced by the patient is one of the serious health
condition which may lead to morbidity in a patient if not provided treatment on emergency
basis (YouTube, 2019). A nursing team needs to be quick and advanced enough to take
instant action in such condition in order to void nay kind of complications or death of the
patient. Also the nursing team in such a condition must be advanced enough to consist of
proper information and knowledge that is related to the patient’s health history and treatment
conditions.
Strengths:
In order to provide a better care giving to the patient, it is essential to develop an
effective nursing team. In order to accomplish the requirement of an effective nursing team,
the nursing facilities must focus on specific strengths. There were few strengths that were
highlighted in the video such as effective communication (Riley, 2015). After going through

the video, it was observed that the nursing process that was conducted by the team was very
positive. There was quick link between the team, as they reported to the emergency situation
the moment they were called. The next strength of the team was critical thinking ability
(Welp, Meier & Manser, 2016). The nurse in charge at the moment called her whole team as
she observed severity in the patient’s health condition. After the team arrived, the whole team
worked according to the instruction provided by their team head. The team head was quite
capable of handling critical situations and was had critical thinking capabilities. She at the
moment decided to provide the patient with compression, then delivered Thoracic epidural
analgesia as per requirement, shock treatment and later decided to provide hypothermia
protocol (Aloia et al., 2017). The team reflected good understanding, knowledge and practice
of the compression, and shock delivery. They were providing compression turn wise as it is
required. The nursing team had the knowledge regarding the medication, saline and other
injections administration that are required in handling such situations (Welp, & Manser,
2016). Another strength of the nursing team was time management, the team as operating the
patient according to the time, with accuracy, as it was seen that they were providing
compression for 2 minutes and after every two minute the staff providing compression was
changing (YouTube, 2019). The team showed professionalism while working in the
emergency condition, they were operating to every command that was given to them with
accuracy and the appropriate manner. Professionalism is one of those important factors which
leads a team toward success and perfection. The team leader showed integrity which helped
the team in taking instant decisions regarding the treatment and medication provided to the
patient.
Weakness of nursing teamwork:
After going through the video there were few weaknesses which were observed
throughout the treatment process. One of the most important weakness as evident from the

video is the lack of confidence among the healthcare professionals leading to ineffective
provision of care (Hwang, 2015). Moreover, there is lack of communication among the
healthcare professionals which affects the tea work for the nurses. Moreover, there is
moderate safety competence among the nurses. Furthermore, moderate safety competency
would be enough for clinical experience There would be adjustment of individual as well as
organizational characteristics which would ultimately affecting the safety competency which
has been associated with safety climate perception. Another factor evident from the video
which contributes to the major weaknesses among the nurses in healthcare is the presence of
a communication gap which is between the doctor as well as home healthcare nurses (Hwand
& Ahn, 2015). There are frequent discrepancies in the medication lists. It contributes to the
confusion about various work important for nursing like the writhe person responsible for
writing down the orders, the inaccessibility of the hospital records along with the resistance
for the clinician and staffs who are responsible for accountability (Yi, 2016). Prevention and
bridging of communication gap is important for good communication among the professional
caregivers who ultimately lead to the improvement of communication along with the
development of an efficient documentation system. Moreover, the nurses are not skilled at
interdisciplinary communication along with effective decision making. Provision of a hospice
care along with caregiving model is necessary for the improvement in communication among
nurse. It can be seen from the video that the nurse does not work collegially with the
physicians. Thus from the video it can be understood that there is ineffective communication
along with lack of confidence among the healthcare professionals leading to inadequate
provision of care along with the lack of establishment of therapeutic relationship with the
healthcare providers and the nurses along with the patient. These weaknesses can effect a
team work which will at some point effect the patient health or may be end up causing death.

The team needs to focus on the negative point and flaws in order to grow better in their field
(Gluyas, 2015).
Conclusion:
In order to conclude, it can be stated that, the nursing field is one of the essential part
of a better healthcare service. The nurse play the main part is delivering treatment and care to
the patient. The nursing team is the primary factor which handles any kind of emergency and
first aid cases, in order to do so, the team need to have all positive features such as better
communication, critical thinking, trust, understanding, knowledge, practice and detailed
information regarding the patient’s past and present health condition (Valentine, Nembhard &
Edmondson, 2015). In the video it was observed that the team was working according to the
instructions and guidelines. They had a better understanding and communication among
them, the team was working on single commands. The nurse in charge had detailed
information regarding the health of her patient. The video showed that an advanced and good
nursing team can handle any critical situation and save a patient’s life. though there were few
flaws in the team that were observed I the video which needs to be overcomes o provide a
better treatment and care for the patient.
