1 project description
The NEW LORD STREET PROJECT PERTH is located between Ellenbriook and Bassendean,
where a new bus terminus is located. Located in Western Australia, the new project of New Lord
Street will be able to provide high quality dual carriage road1. This road will connect Reid
Highway and Gnangara Road2. The project is meant to decongest the areas around Ellenbrook,
Brabham, Dayton and the other areas around. In addition, upon completion, the project will
ensure that5 the journey times for the residents in these areas is cut. Congestion is one major
issue whi9ch these residents are able to face with traffic building up to more than 2.5 KM. the
New Lord Street Project Perth will be located about 200 m to the west of the already existing
Lord Street in the former Perth-Darwin National Highway corridor. The project will involve bus
corridor and roundabouts will be constructed on intersections of roads such as the New Lord
Street with Park Street and Youle-Dean Road3. In addition, a shared path which is adjacent to the
road will be constructed in order to provide the access to the Whiteman Park, which will be used
by cyclists and pedestrians. The New Lord Street Perth will help in redistributing of traffic and
decongesting the area and traffic in the Lord Street.

In the projects, new stops, bus priority measures and new bus stations will be constructed. In
addition, in order to encourage motorists to catch public transport, new park and ride facility will
be constructed on the route along Henley Brook. In addition, in order to allow proper execution
of work, the existing Lord Street entrance to the Whiteman will be closed between mid June to

December. This will allow a construction on new entrance. Temporary access will be provided
off the Lord Street about 2000 m south of the entrance. The visit to the project was made
between 1st April and last visit was made on 23rd April. The climatic condition at this time was
dry with moderate temperatures of between 19 and 23 degrees. This meant that works was
happening each day of the visit since the weather and climatic conditions were allowing the
works to continue. In addition, this climatic condition of the p-lace at this period meant that all of
the construction plants and equipment were in used. The ground conditions also meant that the
plants and equipment were able to access all the areas of the project.

Use of excavators with lifting gear. Additional; excavators will be required in this project. This
will ensures that movement and additional excavation areas are well done with minimal timeline.
Considering the closure of some of the road sections, quick execution of works will be expected
to ensure that normality is attained5. Additional excavators will ensure that the works are carried
within the minimum time allocated. In addition, the excavators with the lifting gear will ensure
that the excavators can lift the loads and load to other plants available on site. This will ensure
provision of many plants on site is reduced.
Construction of an asphalt mixing plant near the project. Provision of this plant will ensure that
the project can be carried with easy. Movement of materials from other localities to the site is
one of the major challenges which different road projects are able to face6. This hinders their
project completion on time. To avoid this challenge in this project, an asphalt mixing plant will
be constructed. This will ensure that the asphalt can be provided with ease when needed in the

project. Manufacture of asphalt concrete will be easy when the plant is near the project and
unnecessary delays will not be experienced7. In addition, this plant will also ensure that other
forms of road coated stones used in the road project can be provided with ease.
Forklift truck- movement of materials from one section of the road project to another section is
common. Forklift trucks will ensure that these materials can be moved with ease from one
section to another whenever need arises. The truck is an essential plant which is required to
ensure that the different materials and equipment can be moved from one section to another8.
This will ensure that unnecessary delays will not be experienced waiting to machines and
materials to be delivered. Forklift trucks will therefore be required to ensure that ease completion
of project is attained without delay.
Wheel loader and delivery trucks- road construction involved large movement of cut and fill
sections. Wheel loaders will be needed when cuts are being moved from one section to another
in this project. The wheel loaders will ensure that additional movements of cuts are done when
required9. Having several wheel loaders will ensure that the cut materials are moved
appropriately at the best time. Loading of materials will also be easy when having the wheel
loaders on site. The delivery trucks will be important for the movement of the cuts from some
sections and delivering fills to other sections when required10. The trucks will ensure that
delivery of materials is done on time without delay and thus ensure easy management of the
project.

During the project activities, several projects processes where on process. One of the project
processes which were going on was the survey works. This process was involved the
establishment of control lines and setting references for different positions of the construction
work11. The survey works were carried on different section and then projected to others. There
were used on new sections as well as the area near finish. At the leveling areas, survey works
were also done to ensure that the levels were level. The survey works were most of the works
being carried on the site at different sections.
Excavation works on different sections were also being carried out. Removal of top soil which
was not fit for the construction purposes was being done at the project. Wheel loaders were being
used to cut and load as well excavators on site. The materials were being cut and transported out
of section due to their characteristics and unsuitability to be used. The excavation works were
being carried to achieve stable position where the road foundation can be laid. Most sections
were being excavated since the top material was considered unfit for use.
Compaction processes was another process which was being carried out. The compaction
process was done at areas where the fill materials had been deposited. The compaction works
were being carried to ensure that the road sections were stable and wound barge inwards when
traffic is allowed on the sections12. In addition, on other section of the project, some utility works
such as the sewer sections were being carried out. These works were being done to ensure that
the storm wat5er from the roads sections can be directed to the main sewer lines13. The sewer and

water line processes also involved some key survey works to ensure that their flow will be well
directed.
In addition vegetation clearance processes were also being carried at some key road allowance
sections. This was being done to ensure that proper sight distances for motorists are achieved.
Concrete curb and gutter processes were also being carried on the project. New driveway access
to different areas along the road sections were also allowed to ensure that the vehicles cannot
cross the curbs without causing damages. Lastly, on few sections where the construction of the
road section had been completed, some key landscaping processes were being done. This was
being done after the surfacing layer of the road section had been placed. The road section had
also some key signage being placed to ensure that directions are offered appropriately.

The fleet size is a key component which is used for the construction of the road projects. The
New Lord Street Perth project is meant to cater for the public transport. It is meant to ease the
growing congestion resulting from the growth of the population. Therefore, an increased fleet is
expected to be accommodated on this project once it is completed14. Considering the fleet
available in the area and their increase, it is important to have this project which will ensure that
the available road structure could not be overstressed by the available fleet on road section15.
Easing the public transport from the available road network will be able to provide the new
project with proper fleet section which it can manage.
The sustainability of the fleet on this will be possible since the traffic in the road section will be
shared with other road networks such as the old Lord Street road. The sharing of the fleet on the

section ensures that the overuse of the road section is not overstressed16. In addition, the design
of the roads is able to attain the sustainability issue. The design of the road section is meant to
take care of the fleet of the public transport in this part of WA. The design is designed to take
care of the traffic and fleet over the next 20 year17. This means that the design is done with
projection of increase of fleet over time. Traffic increase consideration is well done to ensure that
the sustainability of the project is achieved18. The consideration of the traffic increase was keenly
considered in the design process. This is to ensure that the durability of the road network will be
able to sustain the increase of the amount of traffic which is being experienced in the location.
The introduction of this project is able to cater for the increased traffic which is leading to
congestion. Therefore to ensure sustainability issues are achieved, the consideration of the
increase of traffic on coming years was done.
