INTRODUCTION
Proper management is necessary within an organization because by this they able to
conduct all type of work in effective and appropriate manner. By this manager of a company also
able to manager and monitor their employees in proper way which will leads to succession of
business. Along with this they also able to solve problems as well as issues of staffs which leads
to productivity as well as satisfaction of employees, through which an organization able to attain
goal and objective in appropriate and effective way (Easterby-Smith, Thorpe and Jackson, 2012).
This report is based on ASDA which is a subsidiary retail store, established in year 1949 by Peter
and Fred Asquith and Sir Noel Stockdale. Its headquarter is in South Bank, Leeds, West
Yorkshire, England and approx 663 location on which they are operating. Topics which are
going to explain in this report are about respective company, its history and why this is selected
for report. Along with this it include vision, leadership style and management practices adopted
by company and how it can be adopted by company.
MAIN BODY
1. History and summary of company
ASDA store Ltd is a one of the famous British supermarket retail store whose
headquarter is in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is founded in year 1949 by Peter and Fred Asquith
and Sir Noel Stockdale. They offer variety of products such as Grocery, general merchandise as
well as services related to finance. Moreover there are approx 165000 number of employees
working in this store. The respective company is operating business in main two subsidiaries that
are ASDA mobile and ASDA money. They are operating their business operations and functions
in approximately 633 locations (Belbin, 2012). Mission statement of ASDA store is to become
Britain's one of the best as well as valuable retail store by fulfilling and exceeding needs of
customers always. Moreover vision statement of respective company is to develop and design
appropriate products and services which fulfil need of customers in affordable price.
The first store of ASDA is established in year 1963, for which Asquith brothers
converted an old theatre building into supermarket with self service. Then in year 1965
respective peoples approaches and send proposal to Associated Dairies to develop as well as run
their butchery department at their small store. After some time both companies join together to
run business and they named is as ASDA (Asquith + Dairies). In year 1970 ASDA started

growing rapidly at marketplace. In this duration respective company open or launch more than
30 stores in England, along with this they are also start expanding in south countries where they
open store in various areas such as Estover area of Plymouth, Devon and Gosport. Respectively
they are expanding in South Wales area like Rogerstone and Newport where largest store is open
in year 1989. Now a day the respective company is conducting its business at high level and their
customers base is also enlarge as comparison to others (Pines and et.al., 2012). In this report
supermarket retail industry is selected because it is most appropriate sector or industry for this
report. This is so because in respective industry there is major role or involvement of leadership
that help research to evaluate situations in effective and appropriate manner.
2. Vision, leadership style and management practices and strategies making use of various
theories
ASDA is a British supermarket retail store which is operating its business in different
areas of United Kingdom. It is headquarter is in England and they are generally operating is
business through approx 633 stores. They are providing variety of products and services such as
grocery, general merchandise as well as financial services. Their are near by 165000 employees
working with respective company in order to attain their mission and vision. Vision statement of
ASDA company is to provide appropriate products and services to customers according to their
need and demand which can be affordable by them (Asda, 2019). For which manger of
respective company conduct market analysis so that they able to identify and understand needs as
well as requirement of customers. That will help them in developing products and services in
appropriate manner in order to attain goal and objective. Along with this ASDA never
compromise in their quality of products which attract customers in high ratio and retain for a
long run.
The term leadership refers to skills of an individual who is playing a role of leader at an
organization as well as who can handle work in appropriate manner. Along with this leader also
have skills to get work done through others in proper way so that a company able to attain goal
and objectives. There are diverse type of leadership style available and which can be adopted by
a leaders in order to manage their workplace such as autocratic, democratic, laissez- faire,
bureaucratic, strategical, transactional, transformational and many others. In respect of ASDA
company they are conducting work by adopting autocratic leadership style (ASDA Leadership
Program, 2016). By which they are operating their business operation and function in effective

manner. This style of leadership is also known as authoritarian leadership in which decision is
based by concerning each and every individual with in a workplace. At respective company
employees are free to take decision according to situation by which they handle situation in
effective and appropriate manner.
For an organization management practices are essential because by this they able to
conduct work in effective and appropriate manner. Such as conduct proper planning according to
situation, implement plan in effective manner, motivate employees so that they conduct work in
proper way in order to attain goal as well as objective. As per the case of ASDA they conduct or
adopt management strategies in order to do appropriate recruitment and selection process.
Thorough which company operations and functions will conduct in proper manner in order to
attain goal and enhance profitability ratio (ASDA Leadership Program, 2016). For which they
conduct various activities such as planning according to vacant position, hire candidates which is
appropriate, train them so that they enhance their skills and conduct work in proper way. They
also conduct activities for motivating and encouraging employees on every six months.
For conducting management practices in effective and appropriate manner ASDA adopt
theory X and theory Y management theory (Organizations Behaviour of ASDA, 2019).
Moreover they also adopt motivational theory so that they motivate and encourage their
employees in effective and appropriate manner. According to this theory in an organization there
are two type of employees having different behaviour i.e. behaviour X and behaviour Y
employees. Theory X employees are those staff who always need close supervision as well as
these peoples didn't like to work. Along with this these peoples are always desire for money.
Whereas theory Y staff like to conduct work as well as they didn't required any close
supervision. These peoples are self motivated and encouraged to do work in proper manner.
3. How it can be achieved or implement by company
Leadership style refers to a way in which a leader manger and run their organization in
effective manner in order to attain succession at a marketplace. In context of ASDA they are
operating their business functions through autocratic leadership style. According to which they
will do planning, directing, motivating, implementing, developing plans and many more
(Giltinane, 2013). According to manager of respective company they hire appropriate employees
which conduct work in effective and appropriate manner. Along with this they also training and
development to all staff when any change occur at a workplace by which they can adopt it in

effective and best way. According to this style staff of respective company are free to take
decision according to situation or condition. This is so because there main objective of
management is to attain goal and vision in proper manner.
Manager of respective company adopt appropriate marketing strategies by which they
able to conduct thing in right as well as appropriate way. Main reason behind adopting strategies
of management at workplace is to hire appropriate employees and empower them to conduct
work in effective manner which will leads to increase in profitability ratio. Along with this
company also encourage employees by organizing various activities such as train them,
encourage employees, appreciate them and many more (Yahaya and Ebrahim, 2016). For train
and develop employees ASDA manager adopt various sources such on the job training, off the
job training, corporate learning, store attachment, role specific training and many more.
Moreover respective company adopt suitable marketing practices according to situation of
workplace, by this they gain competitive advancement in proper manner that leads to increase in
profitability and market shares.
ASDA adopt theory X and theory Y for developing marketing strategies in effective and
efficient manner. For which manager of respective company conduct analysis and develop
strategies according to both type of peoples so that they equally encourage them in effective and
appropriate manner. This will help them in developing suitable and essential relationship
between employees and employer. Along with this when manager of respective company
develop strategies by considering both type of employees they able to satisfy them in effective
and efficient manner.
By conducting these steps or method in effective and appropriate manner ASDA able to
enhance its profitability ratio and market shares by adopting business operations and function in
proper manner.
4. Recommendation for improvement
By evaluating and analysing all mentioned topics and situation ASDA must have to
conduct some changes and innovation so that they able to do effective and efficient function at a
workplace. Along with this they through innovation and changes company able to enhance their
profitability ratio as well as market shares by expanding business in national and internation
level. Some major or essential recommendation for respective company in order to improve their
working are they must adopt new and innovative promotional technology so that they able to

attract more and more customers in effective manner. Along with this they must also provide
training to employees so that they can do work in more appropriate manner. They must also
engage their employees in decision making process so that get more innovative and unique ideas
from employees. When ASDA adopt these recommendation in appropriate and effective manner
they able to increase their profitability ratio and customers bases in proper ways.
CONCLUSION
From above discussed point it can be concluded as well as evaluated that management is
essential for an organization in order to maintain and run business operation in effective manner.
By effective management an organization able to conduct work in appropriate manner that help
in attaining goal and objective in proper ways. Along with this managers also able to identify
issues and problems in proper way which help in developing strategies and plans accordingly and
appropriately. Moreover for running business in effective manner a managers needs to adopt
various leadership theory and strategies which help in conducting business operations and
functions. It is also necessary of an organization to develop as well as establish vision and
mission statements so all staffs of company understand and conduct work accordingly. There are
various type of leadership style which can be adopted by a company such as democratic,
autocratic, laissez- faire, strategic, transactional, transformational and bureaucratic leadership
style. Along with this it is also necessary for an organization to adopt appropriate theory
according to situations and conduction so that they can face as well as overcome it in appropriate
manner.
