Critical thinking Corporate commitment sustainability The corporate commitment to sustainability is considered as one of the essential aspect that should be there so that it can be easy to manage the entire activities. In this paper the discussion will be made on the Emirate airline in which the discussion will be made on the entire concept of sustainability. The corporate mission of the company is to be one of the environmental leaders in the aviation and travel sector. The goal is to maintain sustainability and eco efficiency in reference to the entire activities of the company. In the air and on the ground, the company is committed to act in sustainable manner. They focus on the interests of the customers, business and on the natural environment. In the airline sector, the impact is on the environment in relation to how they fly and what aircraft they use to fly. The emissions used by the company are more than 25% and it is lower than IATA global fleet average (Cui & Li, 2016).With the use of new A380s and the green workhorse, the Boeing 77, the company still continues to minimize the consumption of the fuel. On the long haul, it has been seen that aircraft capacity is used in an effective manner. The company also aims at improving the environmental performance by considering the high standard in the fuel burn, onboard weight reduction and also recycling is considered. So, in this way they use energy and water in an efficient manner and also they focus on the ways to be more sustainable and eco efficient (Bruce, Gao & King, 2017). The standards and code of emirates focuses on the policy concerned with investing in the modern and eco efficient technology. According to this the company has one of the youngest fleets in this sector and also they emphasize on minimizing the noise and lower engine emissions. The aircraft is fully compliant with the international civil aviation companies. Emirates consider chapter 4 noise standards which meet the ICAO engine emission standards. The Airbus A380s are one of the biggest aircraft present and it is designed to fulfill the requirement in relation to the non-sensitive airports. Emirates engineering also ensures that the aircraft should be performed at their optimum level all times (Clark, 2017).The engine washing procedures keep the internal engine and elements clean and it also maintains the fuel efficient performance which prolongs the useful life of the individual. The aircraft of the company is also washed with the procedure of “dry wash” which considers the small amount of cleaning agent applied with the clothes. This procedure also secures thousands of liters of water and by having 1
Critical thinking the clean aircraft assist the company in minimizing the fuel consumption and emission by reducing the weight of the aircraft. In the operation field, emirate invested in best flight planning system which helped to plan flights and it also optimize the routes based on the everyday weather conditions. The flight crew also takes the benefit of the opportunities to secure the fuel and emissions. Emirate emphasizes on improving the entire efficiency of the air traffic management and it also offers flexibility in the overall routes of the flights. To maintain the standards the company the specialist also collaborated with the air traffic control companies on the international platform so that it can be efficient to maintain the routes and operational procedures by considering the latest technology. The company maintained the process of sustainability as it can help in maintaining the overall image of the company in the highly competitive market (Alameeri, Ajmal, Hussain & Helo, 2017). Emirates also emphasizes on the efforts to reduce the impact of continue onboard aircraft. The economy class blankets on the long haul flights are made of 100% recycled plastic bottle and in this the ecoThread blanket is made from 28 bottles and with this the sustainable blankets are made. By considering these blankets the company prevented the plastic bottles ending up in the landfill and also it saves the energy and emission in context to manufacturing process (Emirates, 2019) In 2013, the company also introduced environmental initiative which is known as “A greener tomorrow”. The emphasis of this initiative is on assisting the not for profit environmental and conservation companies by offering a funding award of $150,000. It has been noted that “A greener tomorrow” is the outcome of the company and it is the commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation (Jayaraman, Liuzzi, Colapinto & Malik, 2017). The money for “Greener tomorrow” enhanced through different recycling programs in the Emirates group. The company again re- launched “A GREENER TOMORROW IN 2016”. In 2016, the company launched a campaign in which the company selected three organizations in the wildlife protection and environmental conservation in Africa. So, in a best manner the company focused on the set standards in context to sustainability. The set standards should be followed by the company so that it can be simple for the company to fulfill the needs of the society by maintaining the environment (Emirates, 2019). 2
Critical thinking There are various rules and regulations implemented by the government of UAE. The main of the UAE is to ensure that there should be sustainable use of the resources like water and agriculture land so that diversification in the economy can take place. One of the laws is Federal Law 24 of 1999 that is set out for the overall environmental protection and conservation in the UAE. This law is considered by the company so that the activities conducted should focus on the environmental implications of the activities and also it makes it illegal to damage the entire environment (Redpath, O'Connell & Warnock-Smith, 2017).The main aim behind the law is that “the polluter will pay” which states that the individual who pollute the environment will be liable to clean up the cost. In the recent news, it has been said by the UAE government that they will be working on the new federal environmental legislation that will allow the ministry of the environment and water to consider the right step and also it will impose the penalties on the polluters. Emirate also considered the overall regulation of the government in context to sustainability (Issa & Al Abbar, 2015). To manage entire framework in relation to the environment the company focused on considering the provisions or the laws that has impacted the overall commitment to sustainability of the company. Federal law no 24 1999, for protection and development of environment offers the legislative framework in which the focus is given on protection and conserve the quality and natural balance of the environment. It also manages the forms of pollution which can also impact the economic, agricultural and industrial development programs. The focus is also on bringing improvisation in the standard of living. This law states that society and health of the human beings of the activities should be managed so that it can be easy to attain the positive outcome (Lexology ,2019). So, it can be concluded that companies should focus on maintaining their commitment level in context to sustainability so that positive outcome can be attained. Emirates also maintain sustainability in the entire operations so that positive outcome can be attained in the highly competitive market. Due to government regulations the impact is also on the activities which should be managed by the companies so that growth can be attained in the market. In context to airline sector, sustainability is one of the essential factors that should be there so that the entire activities can be boosted and also it helps to maintain the positive image of the company. 3
