Introduction:
The following essay is an analysis of an academic article on the case study of
Corporate Social Responsibility program of the company Johnson & Johnson in Africa to
help the people living with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) (Chattu, 2015;
Fauci, 2016). The aim of the essay is to understand why the chosen article is important and
whether the socially responsible marketing strategy can contribute to company profits.

-Reason for selecting the article
The chosen article titled “Corporate social responsibility in public health: A case-
study on HIV/AIDS epidemic by Johnson &Johnson company in Africa” by Chattu (2015)
outlines several important aspects which makes the article suitable for understanding the
social responsibilities of corporate and how an organization can best address them to develop
a socially responsible marketing. These aspects include:
Understanding the impact of AIDS on the society and how it can impact corporate
working in those regions. The author pointed out the number of people affected by IDS and
how it impacts the society as well as companies and thus impresses upon the gravity of the
situation (de Vries, 2016).
Outlining the social responsibilities and activities of Johnson & Johnson which can
help to understand how an organization can be involved in social and environmental
development. The authors discussed the various actions CSR activities and responsibilities of
the company, dividing them based on the responsibilities towards the communities,

Socially responsible marketing is a philosophy that implies that a company should
consider the best interests of the society in its marketing objectives and thereby ensure that
the market offerings are not solely driven by profits but through the enforcement of social
and ethical values that can benefit the society (Gulati, 2017). According to Schrempf-Stirling
and Palazzo (2016), socially responsible marketing has several advantages for a company that
can help it to prosper. Tax cuts and rebates are offered by governments to incentivize the
involvements of companies in CSR programs thereby offering financial advantage to the
companies (Gulati, 2017). Moreover, CSR activities can also foster trust from the regulatory
authorities and government and therefore provide the organization with fewer obstacles in its
operations which can in turn drive the profits of the company (Visser et al., 2017). Pulker et
al. (2018) also pointed out that these programs can help to improve the brand image of the
company and therefore help to attract more customers and investors and therefore support
company’s profitability.

important consideration of corporate working in Africa and that the CSR program of Johnson
& Johnson to help people living with AIDS in Africa can significantly help to improve not
