Executive Summary
This report deals with every kind of corporate social responsibilities done by
the companies to make some social activities. These kinds of activities are done by
the companies to satisfy the society and to enhance the fact that the companies have
some responsibilities towards the society and towards the people of the society. It also
creates the brand awareness and increases the brand value also. This report will
emphasize upon the CSR activities done by the Unilever Company and the causes of
its failure. There will be the analysis done upon the reason behind the failure. Two
multinational entities like Apple and the Coca Cola will be elucidated here and there
CSR activities will be discussed. The reason of their success is discussed below with
proper analytical data and evaluation.

Introduction
According to Mirela Danubianu and Cristian Teodorescu the CSR activities are the
combination of the responsibilities, obligations and activities for the sake of the development
of the society and for the whole community. The endorsement of the top management and the
involvement of the external facilitator can improve the CSR policies. There should be certain
advisory board which will deal with the projects and the activities related to the CSR. The
portfolio and the mission and the vision statement should enhance the CSR activities of the
organization. The CSR activities should be the sum of the proper communication,
involvement with monitoring, reporting and systematic evaluation. Now-a-days the
companies are focusing not only in profit but also upon the appropriate things. To make the
organization strong and effective the managers are trying to build a good organizational
behavior. There are several ways through which the companies can enhance their brand value
and the CSR activity is one of those. It also enhances their brand awareness (Hoffman,
Frederick & Schwartz 2014). The organizational behavior should be ethical and follows some
set of principles based on morality and values. The values and the principles elucidate the
difference between the good and bad. Managers of the organizations should follow and
maintain some ethics so that the organization faces very nominal harms. There should be
certain guidelines through which the employees and stuffs will come to know about the
ethical issues and that will set the dos and don’ts. The principles which indicate the right and
wrong should be followed to maintain effective ethical behavior in the organization. Some
researchers defines that the wrong activities as the workplace deviance (Lawrence & Weber
2014). The deviance in the property is also unethical and calls as the wrong activity. There
are four kinds of deviances happen in the organization those are production deviance which
elucidates early leaving from the work place, taking breaks in an excessive manner during the

work, intentionally slow production and wasting the resources of the organization. Second
deviance is that property deviance which defines harming the resources and the equipment,
receiving the kickbacks, robbery from the workplace or from the organization. The third
deviance is the political deviance which, consist of favoritism, making the gossips and fraud
conversation about the co-workers, making blames to the co-workers and making the errors
while evaluating the employees (Ruggie 2013). The last and fourth deviance is the personal
aggression which defines the sexual harassment in the work place, using slang language or
abusing someone verbally and mostly endangering and threating the co-workers or other
employees. Managers should take care about this and they have to make some effective rules
and norms related to these unethical practices. The victims should get the punishments
(Tsalikis & Fritzsche 2013). The organization should enhance their moral development and
through this the unethical behavior can be eliminated (Shaw 2016). There should be some
principles which should be maintained by the managers in their ethical decision making
(Quinlan 2019). In the time of the selection the behavior of the employees should be judged
by the employer and the managers should give proper training for the betterment of their
ethics or the code of ethics should be placed by the employer in the mind and heart of the
employees (Trevino & Nelson 2016). Special care and training only can develop the ethics of
the employees. Managers should maintain the working atmosphere and the ethics and
disciplines should be built by the employer in the work place so that the employees and the
stuffs never become affected by some unethical issues (Crane 2019).
Discussion
According to Jie Zou’s article the needs of the stake holders should be met by the
organization and the organization should satisfy them through their behavior, processes and
culture. CSR activities are the responsibilities of the organization towards society and the

community. As per the article of Jie Zou, the stakeholders of the organization should be
treated as trustworthy and cooperative way so that they feel obelized. He emphasizes that
CSR activities is a multi-dimensional concept. Organizations should follow and maintain a
road-map and the road-map should be established in such a way that it can be established and
the work can be accomplished by the organization (Ferrell & Fraedrich 2015). The activities
which are choosing by the company should deal with the current issues of the society and of
the environment (Carroll & Buchholtz 2014). Through these activities the society should be
benefited and the betterment of the people should be done. The top management should
accomplish the CSR activities and complete it. The preparatory audit should be done and the
audit department should assess the CSR activities so that it can be performed in systematic
way (Öberseder, Schlegelmilch & Murphy 2013). Stakeholders like the business stake
holders, societal and inner stake holder also should be engaged in the CSR activities and the
whole community should be benefited by this (Morsing & Roepstorff 2015). The CSR
activities are done to develop the public awareness (Chen & Hung-Baesecke 2014). CSR
activities should nurture some factors of the society those are protection of environment and
making the sustainable development, education enhancement, less corruption in the
workplace, proper maintenances of the laws and regulations increase the stakeholder’s
awareness, identify one’s abilities and skills for providing the academic assistance like
scholarships and other kinds of welfare activities (Jiang & Wong 2016).
Discuss why Unilever’s CSR approach, as described in this article, is
considered unsuccessful.
According to the Borelli article written by Tom Borelli, the Unilever Company incorporates a
proper communication with the society and with the employees, suppliers, stake holders,

several parts of the world was trying a framework to perform CSR activities. They
recognized the expectations of the society is changing day-by-day so that they have to give
more concentration in the sustainability development and they should focus on the future goal
which is the sustainable future. The cause behind the failure of the CSR of the Unilever is
mainly the financial issue and the wrong leadership of the Polman. The company has a long
history on the sexual harassment and issues related to the environment. Polman was focusing
upon only profit gaining and decision making rather than maintaining effective policies,
norms and practices. The steps taken by Polman for reducing the sexual harassment in the
workplace was not accepted by the NGO’s. In the workplace the workers were exploited and
they were abused by the managers (Hoi, Wu & Zhang 2013). There was the lagging of
effective organizational behavior and ethical decisions. There was not any positive
implementation of the moral, disciplines and ethics (Bae & Kim 2013). As the result the CSR
activities were not well implemented by the Unilever and this become the cause of their
failure and this also causes for the financial damage of the company (Maas & Boons 2017).
Unilever Company could develop effective endorsement of top management and CSR
policies with documents. They could enhance the participation of the stakeholders. With the
assistance of Advisory board they could attempt their CSR activities. There were less
disciplines and guidelines for the workplace and the management was dull and less effective.
Discuss why CSR may be successful for other companies.
Now-a-days companies are maintaining good CSR activities and that is because to increase
their value. To build the awareness in the mind of the people and to enhance them with the
involvement in their activities, companies are paying their attention. Apple is the company
which is the best active organization in their CSR activity. Apple is the company which

encourages the global volunteer program in the year of 2011 for the local communities. This
program again revised in the year of 2015. USD 125 million was donated by the Apple to the
organizations so that the community can get the developments in the year of 2018. The
people who become victimized in Hurricane, they were also responded by the company. The
offices and the stores of the Apple were mounted high from the ground by the solar panels so
that the grass can grew and can be utilized by the local people. Educational programs are
provided by the Apple from the year of 2008. Denise Smith the vice president of the Apple
provided many benefits to the employees (Kesavan, Bernacchi & Mascarenhas 2013). Apple
has provided many labor welfares and human rights audit. In the year of 2018 five suppliers
was eliminated by the company from the supply chain just because of they were unwilling to
join in the human rights audit (Clarke & Boersma 2017). Health and safety issues are also
take care by the company. Eighteen months training program is also provided by the
company for the suppliers of the Apple, which is providing for the improvement of the
employees’ health and safety. The organization is developed clinics for the treatment of the
employees and for their family members that is called the AC wellness. The organization is
focusing special care in the case of gender diversity and issues related to the minorities.
Sexual harassment is strictly prohibited in the workplace. The company makes their
payments in an equal basis to the employees from the year of 2016. Native American, Native
people of Hawaiian, black people, Hispanic and women are employed in the year of 2018
from the underrepresented groups. Mac-mini is invented by the Apple which consumes
energy in very less manner and it is the best energy efficient desktop in all over the world.
Apple maintains the guide line which calls as the energy star. The company achieved 100%
in the Clean Energy Index and maintains green peace (Backer 2013). The company is
emphasizing upon the uses of renewable energy in their operation and manufacturing. Apple
makes the promise to transport four gig watts of fresh energy in its supply chain by the year

of 2020. Apple has very effective water supply management and the clean water program was
launched and more than 13.6 billion gallons are saved by the suppliers of the company. The
water is reused by the company in their daily process (Khan, Alam & Alam 2015). Apple is
focusing upon the sustainability development so that the natural resources can be used by the
future generation also.
Coca Cola is another beverage company which is maintaining very effective CSR
activities in several aspects of their life cycle (Foster 2014). They are focusing upon
educational programs, environmental issues, communal development, and relief from the
humanitarian disaster (Karnani 2014). They are also concern about the healthy living and
health issues. In the year of 2013 the company paid the attention in the education and
empowerment of the workers. They are focusing upon the labor welfare and human rights
issues so that the company becomes ethically strong and the code of the business become
fruitful. The efficiency of the consumption of the energy is improved by twenty percent. The
company has dictated that it will reduce the carbon foot print by 25% before the year of 2020.
Coca Cola has operated and supported two hundred and ninety physical programs in
approximately 125 countries all over the world. They are providing proper guidance related
to the health and safety issues of the employees and of the workers in the workplace. The
sexual harassment is strictly prohibited in the workplace and the gender diversity is also
nurtured in an efficient way by the management (Chaklader & Gautam 2013).
Conclusion
CSR activities are the core activity which should be maintained by the organizations
and they have to spend at least 2% of their profit for the CSR activity and for the

development purpose of the community and for the society (Den 2014). The company also
should built effective guidelines and norms with policies which will provide the guidance to
the employees and to the workers to develop the ethical values in the work place (Lee, Park
& Lee 2013). The managers should encourage the employees and the workers through several
educational programs for develop the ethical values and to determine the wrong and right
activities. The managers should focus upon the organizational behavior which depends from
person to person and the manager should develop the employees and their behaviors.
Recommendation
To enhance the CSR activity the companies should focus upon the current
issues of the environment and the society.
To develop the CSR activity the companies have to spend their 2% of profits.
The CSR audit should be done in a systematic way so that it can be evaluated
properly and any kind of new implementations can be introduced in the list.
The companies should include the stake holders and workers also in their CSR
activity.
Government also should take some serious steps for the betterment of the CSR
activity done by the companies.
