1CRITICAL REVIEW IN STATISTICAL CONTEXT
The paper focuses on the quality of sleep exhibited by surgical patients in the setting
of health institutions. A descriptive study has been conducted among 411 patients and a
manually prepared questionnaire has been used aiming at the factors affecting the personal
information regarding the sleep pattern of patients. Regarding the methodology used in the
paper, voluntary participation of patients has been studied. Overall, 411 patients have
participated in the survey and submitted the data though questionnaire developed on the
Pittsburgh sleep quality index. The method of the survey chosen has been appropriate as the
selection of patients has been done in a clear way excluding the incomplete forms. Moreover,
the data collection methods have been genuine with the help of software based statistical
index. In addition to these, the author has also kept in mind the ethical considerations for the
study justifying the approval of the survey undertaken. All rules and guidelines have been
followed according to the declaration made by Helsinki. Added advantages of the
methodologies used in the paper has been the proper use of statistical tools for bio statistical
analysis like the Whitney U test, ANOVA or analysis of variance and Students T test. The
high significance from the T test is a clear indication of the acceptance of the hypothesis
(Yilmaz, Sayin and Gurler, 2019).
Similar studies has been conducted by Alexander et al (2014), among 9611 patients
who have undergone cataract surgery through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The
studies have been in alignment with aforementioned survey stating that patients undergoing
surgery or post-operative treatment have often shown improper sleep patterns. Another study
conducted by Manian and Manian (2015) among the patients who are adult and hospitalized
suffering from infection, state that the results have been contradictory to the findings of the
author as self-reported unsound sleep have been common and frequent among hospitalized
patients often undergoing infection related diagnosis. Research ethics implications has been
considered here as the proper consent of the patients has been taken during the study.
