Subtopic 1
The strengths and shortcomings of the concepts and content of an
essay is measured by a critical review of a journal article. Description, review and
explanation are presented to encourage readers to determine the importance of the
article (Queensu.ca, 2019). From critical review we have learned that the document
is not only a good source of information, but also an important tool in the
development of a research proposal. This article will be used to develop a research
plan and outline the main points of reducing tobacco use and its impact on heath,
productivity and costs. Reducing tobacco is good for health as well as for business
as around 8 to 30 minutes are spend by individuals in taking tobacco that caused
bad effect on the mental and physical health. On the current article we will critically
review the importance of reducing smoking cessation to a more effective approach.
In this paper, we will examine the benefits and risks associated with reducing
smoking. We will also look at the potential impact of tobacco use on business, how is
going to strengthen or worsen the activities of employees and employers, and what
are the possible effects of tobacco on workplace.
Main body.
Subtopic 2
To begin with one of the main inductive argument that Adams was presenting
in this article, is that tobacco has a negative impact on health. Observation shows
each year, in the United States, almost 500 000 people die of illnesses directly
related to smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke, a severe public health
concern is smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke. According to the centres
for disease control and prevention, the number of people exposed to second-hand
smoke in the United States is estimated to have risen by about 20 percent since
1990. Exposure to second hand smoke also raises the risk of heart disease by 256
percent – 30 percent and stoke by 20 percent–30 percent among non-smokers. It
has also stated that cost of smoking to employees is rising over years, as it has lead
to several diseases such as cardiovascular, infection cancer, premature death
among individuals that smoke on daily basis. So, employees as well as their family
member need to avoid smoking in order to enjoy healthy lifestyles for more years.
Concluding the above argument, we have devastating results because of smoking in

US. Such as younger and middle aged group people that are working in smoke free
workplace have lower risk of cardiovascular events or heart failure.
Another argument put forward in the article by the author is inductive, arguing
that millions of adult employees in the United States smoke. The result that we can
see from the argument is that 21.7% of US adult employees, representing more than
32 million people, currently reported using a tobacco product in 2014, and more than
22 million workers currently reported smoking cigarettes. The author has specified
that rate of smoking vary as per type of occupation such as individuals that belong to
construction or transportation more smoked as compared to management and sales.
In another words, it can be stated that white collar person are less interested to
intake alcohol that blue collar that is 46% vs 33%. It has also estimated from the
study that tobacco products are used by 57% of military veterans that are in age
between 18-25 mostly. Therefore, an increase in the consumption of cigarettes has
caused the number of smokers to increase and there is a significant effect of
smoking on the business performance of organizations in the United States. So, the
author wants to stay that smoking is common among US workforces as many
individuals intake while completing their respective task in the organisation.
The following argument is deductive and shows that smoking has vital
repercussions for the wellbeing of people. Around 34 million US adults smoke and
develop severe health issues, based on the main findings presented in the report.
The research also found that for one year or more, a large number of people who are
addicted to cigarettes have mostly been smoking, the explanation why this is so
necessary is that smoking has many adverse effects on your body such as:
increased levels of stress, depression, anxiety and the emerge of additional health
issues. The author has also illustrated that reducing intake of tobacco will helps in
improving health condition of employees, enhance overall productivity and
performance of individuals thus contribute in growth and success of organisation. In
conclusion, smoking has a significant impact on the health of the people of the
United States so it is one of the crucial health benefits that can be offered by
employer to its employees by reducing the intake of tobacco to some extent.
Because as per author perspective, employer by providing working place smoking
cessation can enjoy health and economic benefits as it will resulting in saving lot
many cost of organisation. It has suggested that financial incentive can be a tool that

could be used by employer to motivate employees to quit smoking or more
participate in cessation treatment for good health.
The inductive argument presented by Adam in the article shows that in
addition that smoking have in the health also smoking affects the economy. Per year,
smoking costs the United States more than $ 300 billion dollars, including almost 170
billion dollars in medical care and more than $ 150 billion dollars in lost production.
When determining whether to eliminate smoking or not, the economy is a very
important factor to consider. It is necessary because there will be no economic
benefits for society if we do not cut down on the amount of smoking. There are
several steps that could be taken by employer create smoking free workplace so that
individuals have better health such as review of health insurance policies of person.
The author has suggested that free cessation counselling and medication need to be
provided to employees furthermore employer need to implement tobacco free work
policies. Concluding the above, smoking has a variety of impacts on the economy
and the economic influence of smoking is not only felt by smokers, but also by those
who do not smoke.
Subtopic 3
In support of his claims, the author used a wide number of references to
support his claims. He also placed the impact that smoking has on the economy at
the forefront of his personal analysis. Moreover, to support his point, he used some
facts and figures. The key argument reported in the sources is that the United States
economy loses more than 300 billion dollars annually in terms of smoking, which
includes 170 billion dollars in medical care and 150 billion dollars in lost productivity.
The statistics are from the Public health Service of the United States and the Office
of the Surgeon General. All of this detail was written in the Report of Public Health
(2014). The statement of the author is correct since it comes from the Department in
charge of the United States Health Service. Author goes even deeper supporting the
same claim that confirms the objectivity of the data, “Annual Health Care spending
attributable to cigarette smoking” edited by Xu et al. (2015). To conclude, this source
is valid. In order to evaluate the sources authority, objectivity, timeliness, supporting
evidence and relevance has been done in order to state sources from which
information has been taken.
