CULTURE AND DIVERSITY 3
Project 1
1 Examples of each aspect that make up Punjabi culture
Attitude: Punjabi culture encompasses the tradition, beliefs, and attitude of people in the northern
part of India. Punjabis have a positive attitude towards lifestyle and culture. The language,
beliefs, and values of people in the Northern part of India have a traditional touch of art,
architecture, and music.
Language: Punjabi is the main language of Punjab which has higher echelons of status and
power. The Punjabi language is written in the Gurmukhi alphabet and there are more than 130
million people who speak this language.
Prejudices and structure: There are racism and prejudices which discriminates Punjabi people in
India. Punjabis in Germany are unhappy and discriminated.
2 Cultural perspective
Diversity of Punjabi culture has several cultural perspectives and biases which brings a challenge
in health care systems. Diverse culture strengthens the country while cultural biases such as
racism have a negative influence in health care service. As a nurse, there are limitations in
several countries to provide health care service. At some place, Punjabi nurses are not allowed to
work in hospitals due to racism and cultural bias perspectives. Countries like Italy and Germany
have racism and discrimination which disturbs the work culture.
3 Addressing the cultural perspective
The culture perspective of racism needs to be seriously addressed as it harms the work culture.
To ensure that it does not impact the health care system, a health service assistant will work on
building connections with employees and superiors to improve health care quality and reduce
discrimination. As a health service assistant, it is important to work in harmony and address
changes that improve health care services. To work inclusively is the prime role that a health
care assistant should focus on while ensuring quality services that improve the lives of patients.
4 Inclusive
Heath care practice of providing quality service is one such aspect that ensures health care
setting while improving health services in an organization. Providing quality service is the major
practice that health service providers should focus on. One aspect that needs to be improved in

the health care setting is working with confidence which builds a positive influence on others.
Lack of confidence tends to produce limitations at work thereby confidence in the healthcare
settings is important. Building connections in addressing cultural perspective is important while
it is important to trust and respect team members.
5 Experience
About the experiences that I had with people from other culture than Punjabi culture are negative
and it directly affected my behavior. Work culture differences are hindering my confidence and
support. The work culture differences were very well observed when I was practicing nursing.
The relationship with employees affected due to cultural differences. Most of the people were
from other culture and I was the one with Punjabi culture. The work relations, employee
engagement, and trust issues were addressed in this experience while it affected my behavior as I
was rude with them and lost my patience.
6 SKA
It is important to focus on skills, knowledge, and attitude of people to develop cultural
competency at work. As an enrolled nurse, I need to have good communication skills so that I
engage with other employees and have trust and respect for them. Having a conversation solves
the major issues so I will be patient enough in the situation. Knowledge about diverse culture and
service attitude will ensure cultural competency. The skills, knowledge, and attitude of a person
will help to ensure cultural competency and provide a positive environment to work with diverse
culture people.
7 Experiences from different areas of diversity
There are different places where I have recognized and respected the needs of people. When I
was working as a practitioner, my colleagues from the different field was good at work and they
did not discriminate the cultural backgrounds of people. I have respected the needs of people in
those areas. He was an accountant by profession and was a very good friend of mine. He was
disabled but fulfilled his work responsibility. Thereby I have respect for his strong belief in
himself and his work responsibilities that he fulfills.
An example of difficulty to communicate with Aboriginal is when a new person from a different

8 Responding to diversity
To respond to diversity and embrace diversity, the resources that support organizations and
individuals are calling up for team meetings that will help people to know different perceptions
and provide a decision that best supports the organization needs. People should use language that
is common to the work practice as the diverse culture brings people together. A common
language of communication such as English language will connect and help in better
communication.

Introduction
Education, housing and employment are the core factors that affect the life of Australia’s
aboriginal. These are the major issues that need to be focused on while considering the diverse
culture acceptance. It affects the health care system and impacts the social-emotional being
which means an increase in depression among people. Australia’s aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people have different work culture thereby it becomes difficult to stay in the country
with social, economic and political problems. There is racial discrimination that is prevalent in
the country which needs to be focused on a large basis by the government and by the people. The
changes need to be made so that the significant risk factors for the Aboriginals are reduced.
However, it is important to improve the health care status and to engage people at work with the
longstanding challenge (Dockery, 2011). The health status gap needs to be improved between
non-indigenous and indigenous. Social determinants tend to realize the population health which
determines the interconnected issues of social factors. Lack of equal rights in primary health care
and health infrastructure is lowered. The lower standard health care services need to be
addressed and improvement in the indigenous health outcomes must be focused.
Social, political and economic issues
The indigenous population in Australia largely tend to experience socio-economic issues such as
income inequality, unemployment rate, poor education, etc. The average income of Aboriginal
people is low as compared to the Australians who are non-indigenous. This shows the level of
inequality in the country. Even the rate of unemployment is different while comparing it to the
Australians employment rate. This is a major difference that is noticed and needs to be improved
(Gooda, 2010). Poverty among the Aboriginals leads to poor infant diet which leads to chronic

disease. In health care, these issues are not addressed thereby the health care opportunities are
not provided to indigenous. There is chronic stress among people which leads to an increase in
health risk. There is substance abuse used by the population which is less than 18 years. This
leads to a higher risk of young children who are addictive to smoking and substance use. Mental
health problems are higher with social and economic issues. There is a paternalistic ideology that
is evident today with the territory, federal and local governments. Paternalistic policies have
major restrictions in terms of ostensibly and restrict choice in the best interest. Inequitable
policies discriminate people in indigenous culture while there is a dire effect of health and well-
being in this case. Unequal distribution of health and well-being lead to unequal power and
resources between non-indigenous and indigenous people in Australia (Kalb, Le & Leung,
2011). Women experience poor health due to lifestyle and education issues.
Own culture, western systems and structures
Due to cultural differences, Aboriginals are treated differently. There is a strong impact on the
economy and the people while differentiating the culture of Indigenous and non-indigenous. As
such this impacts the Australian economy. The western systems impact the Aboriginals as
several aspects are not provided to the people of Torres Strait Islander. The British colonization
has affected aboriginal society. The kinship ties were, particularly for Torres Strait Islander. Due
