This paper discusses the contribution of database directories in the healthcare information system, with a focus on type 2 diabetes. It provides a comparison between PubMed and Google Scholar, and discusses the chosen article, Standardized screening for periodontitis as an integral part of multidisciplinary management of adults with type 2 diabetes: an observational cross-sectional study of cohorts in the USA and UK. Background:
The purpose of the assignment is to find out the contribution of the database directories in
the health care information system. In this regards the paper will provide a comparison between
the database directories, process of choosing articles, contribution of the article in health care
system and discussion of an article related to health. The chosen topic for the assignment is type
2 diabetes and the chosen article is Standardized screening for periodontitis as an integral part
of multidisciplinary management of adults with type 2 diabetes: an observational cross-sectional
study of cohorts in the USA and UK ((Pumerantz et al., 2017).
Comparison of database directories (PubMed and Google scholar):
Both the database directories Google scholar and PubMed provide relevant literature in
order provide important information regarding health care system that could help to improve the
service. In case of Google Scholar it provides relevant books, journals and articles from any time
in the first attempt, thus the researchers need to custom the time period in order to find out the
proper literature of current research. In contrast PubMed provides only peer reviewed articles of
recent time and it also have the option of best match that helps to choose most recent and best
literature in the first attempt. However, both the database directories are effective in providing
important information and help the health care system to introduce evidence-based interventions
(Salmon, 2013).

Choice of database and the article:
In order to discuss the contribution of database search in the health care information
system data related to type 2 diabetes has been chosen. Then PubMed has been used as the
database directory. The searched was based on the type 2 diabetes management and there were
twenty most recent articles and two best match articles in the first page of the database. After
reading the topic of the articles and reviewing the year of publishing the article one most relevant
article has been chosen for the assignment as the resource. The chosen article is Standardized
screening for periodontitis as an integral part of multidisciplinary management of adults with
type 2 diabetes: an observational cross-sectional study of cohorts in the USA and UK
((Pumerantz et al., 2017). The objective of the study was to find out the prevalence of
periodontitis in type 2 diabetes patients. In this regards a cross sectional study has been carried
out in USA and UK. The study has informed that periodontitis is common in the type 2 diabetes
patients and it could be managed through clinician communication, providing priority to
individual needs and shared decision making (Pumerantz et al., 2017). Such information is
important for managing periodontitis in type 2 diabetes patients. Hence it can be said that the
article is credible in order to provide information in health care system. PubMed has been chosen
for the purpose as it provides current and best matched peer reviewed articles in first attempt thus
facilitates the search in an effective manner.
Contribution of the database search:
Scholarly work:
Scholarly work refers to the work that is peer reviewed, written by expert authority and
published by an honourable association (Fees, 2016). Database search helps to get information

from most recent and relevant research papers and cite them as a source in a new study. Such
data collected from the database helps to evaluate the paper written by the experts, thus supports
the findings of the study (Gargon et al., 2014).
Evidence-based practice:
In evidence-based practice most relevant and recent research regarding the practice is
used to provide effective service and achieve expected outcomes (Hall & Roussel, 2016).
Database search helps to find out credible research papers and use the information in order to
improve the practice. Effective evidence provided by the database search helps to support the
practice and get consent from the consumer regarding the practice without any difficulties
(Gargon et al., 2014).
Personal self-development:
Database search plays an important role in personal development. The information
provided by the research papers collected by database search helps to gather knowledge and use
them in order to improve personal skills. Such improvement helps to provide effective service
and achieve desired outcomes (Gargon et al., 2014).
It can be said that, effective database search provide information from credible and recent
research. Such information helps to improve the scholarly work by providing evidence to support
the new study. Relevant information from current study helps in evidence-based practice and
knowledge gained from the information helps to improve personal skills thus helps in personal
development (Gargon et al., 2014).

Article summarization:
The article chosen for the assignment has focused on the prevalence of periodontitis in
type 2 diabetes patients. In order to carry out the study the researchers have used cross-sectional
study in USA and UK. It has been found that from 253 patients 54.2% patients had low
periodontitis, 24.2% had high periodontitis and only 7.2% patients were periodontally healthy.
The study has found that with clinical communication, effective decision making skill and
prioritizing the needs of the patients could facilitate the periodontitis management in an effective
manner (Pumerantz et al., 2017). Such information helps to understand the prevalence of such
illness and introduce effective strategies to improve the service (Gargon et al., 2014).
