INTRODUCTIONDeveloping manager can be defined as a process of making improvements of own skillsin order to manage functions of organization effectively. This present study has 4 tasks in whichfirst tasks is based on 2 tourism sector company such as Thomas Cook and TUI. It will discussdifferent management styles, leadership styles, organizational culture and communicationprocesses which these companies follow. Next tasks are based on Clayton Crown hotel. Thishotel is a collection of well managed and appointed hotels and these hotels are renowned foroffering unique personality (Mukumbang and et.al., 2016). This reflective report will analyseown strengths and weaknesses & own management personal skills. Further Management reportwill show importance of motivation to a team and responsibilities of management in achievingpre determined goals. Lastly Reflective report will show importance of managerial & personalskills for the future development and ways of increasing skills with the help of personaldevelopment plan.TASK 11.1 Comparison of different management stylesManagement refers to a process of maintaining an environment where all level ofemployees with resources can work together in a group for accomplishing goals. There areseveral management theories which are being followed by TUI and Thomas Cook companies ofTravel & tourism industry. It provides several qualitative services to customers. For successfullyoperating in countries, it is important for them to manage all resources in an efficient manner.For managing effectively, manager of this company uses several theories such as:BasisTUIThomasManagement approaches andmodelsSystem approach:System approach believes thateverything and all departmentsof an organization areinterdependent & interrelated.A system is made by differentparts of an organization. Whenone of all parts fail then wholeContingencyapproach:Contingencyapproach believes thateffectiveness of a managerdepends upon situations of thecompany & their behaviours.There are some factors thatcan impacts on its
system goes wrong, so it isimportant for the manager ofTUI to make a condition and asystem where all level ofemployees can work togetherwith more productively.effectiveness such asindividual differences, size ofthe company, environmentaluncertainty etc. This theoryhelps to provide choice to themanager of Thomas Cook touse the most suitabletechniques (Qiu and et.al.,2015).Management theoriesClassicalmanagementtheories (administrative):InthisAdministrative theory ofmanagement, manager of TUIcompany find a rational way todesign its company. Theyfocus on organizationalmanagement by focusing on alldepartments equally. They putpressure on all departments toaccomplish common goals.Classicalmanagementtheories (Bureaucratic):Ithas various classicalmanagement theoriesincludingscientificmanagement, bureaucratic andadministrative theories.Bureaucratic theory is allrelated to the structure of thecompany. It refers rules,procedures,patterns,regulations of an organization.The main aim of ThomasCook to use this theory is todecrease the complexity oftheir company. With the helpof this theory they makethemselves able to give tasksand authority to employees.
Assumptions & drawbacksThere are some advantages & limitations of all theories in which the main advantage ofcontingency theory is it makes management styles more flexible. On the other hand, it iscomplex and difficult to implement.Advantages of system approach is it makes manager able to interact internal environmentwith external environment and make an effective system. Whereas, it is over conceptual& unpractical theory.The biggest advantage of classical management theories is it has clear hierarchicalstructure that define clear division of labour.1.2 Leadership characteristicsLeadership can be defined as an action of guiding followers of an organization.Management and leadership are called the main pillar of an organization. For accomplishing allgoals of both companies (Thomas Cook & TUI) it is important to not only focus on managementbut also on leadership. For that this company apply and use different characteristic of leadershipthrough leadership theories such as:CharacteristicsTUIThomas CookInnovation/passionLeadership of TUI company isinnovative. They focus onbringing more innovation intheir all processes of the company They believe thatinnovation can attract largernumber of customersLeadership of Thomas Cookcompany are passionate. Theyhave skills and characteristicsto do something effectively.Leaders stylesAutocratic:Autocraticleadership style refers amanagement style in which,leader of an organization haspower and authority to controlall decisions. This type of stylecannot be effective in all typeof situation as it can beDemocratic:It is calledparticipative style of leadingbecause in this style allemployees take activeparticipation in the process ofdecision-making. The mainaim of Thomas Cook for usingthis style is to encourage,
effective only where the leaderneed quick decisions. Leadersof TUI do not involve theiremployees in this type of stylewhichdemotivateemployees(Iqbal, Anwar andHaider, 2015).motivate and increaseemployees decision-makingskills. Creativity is alsoencouraged & rewarded by theleader of the company.Motivation skills &collaborationLeaders of TUI motivate theiremployees. For motivatingthey give them incentive ratherthan focusing on interpersonalrelationship.It is the maintechniques of motivatingemployees. There are 2 typesof incentives such as financial& non-financial, intrinsic &extrinsic. Different types ofemployees work at TUI whichhave different types of needs.According to their needs,leader of the company givethem incentives on the basis oftheir performance. It motivatesthem towards achieving goals.For accomplishing goals ofThomas Cook company it isimportant for them to makestrong relationship with theirpartners and stakeholders.Stakeholders of Thomas cookcompany includes employees,investors, customers, non-governmental & governmentalorganizations etc. They havemore power to influenceeffectiveness of the company.Thomas Cook company morefocus on working withstakeholders in order to solveany type of problems.They arerelationship oriented ratherthan task oriented.1.3 Evaluation of Communication processes in selected businessesCommunication refers an act of informing & transferring messages from one place,person & group to another. In the travel and tourism organization, communication is an integralpart as it helps Thomas Cook & TUI companies to maintain the flow of services.
