The aim of this research is to understand if the movies that have only actors nominated to the
academy awards receive systematic higher ratings compared to those movies in which only
actresses get nominated for the acting award. The first chapter provides a brief introduction in to

immemorial. The female gender is seen to be subservient to their male counterparts who have a

placed on the maintenance of human rights and human dignity.

been known to discriminate in terms of nomination based only on a female lead. This is due to
the less number of audiences drawn by a female lead as compared to a male lead. Such
discrimination can be considered as hugely disrespectful towards the professional actors and can
have a severe damage to the reputation of the Academy Awards. At the same time, analysis has
shown that women all over the world have raised their voices in trying to uphold their status in
the society and gain equal rights as the men population.
Thus, portrayal of women characters with that of a dominating male character is preferred
mainly because of the ratings that are gained based on the characters. The rating provided to the
movies and the viewership of the movies based on the male and female casts can be considered
as the basis for the discrimination. The literature review has shown that the gender gap exists due
to the perception of the audiences as well as sexist and the gender-biased practises undertaken in
