CHAPTER 4: ANALYSIS
4.1 Introduction
The research is conducted with a purpose of identifying the reasons for the decline of the
philanthropic contribution to non-profit organisations. The country in focus is the United States
with emphasis on the impact it may have on the non-profit organisations. The non-profit
organisations are based on Massachusetts and the concepts related to corporate philanthropy are
identified so that survival tactics of the non-profit organisations in the United States is explored.
This includes identifying the obstacles as well as the impact of the decline of corporate
philanthropy in the United States. Recommendations are also made so that the no-profit
organisations can improve its position in the business.
In this particular chapter of the dissertation the results of the interviews are provided
along with an analysis of the findings from the interviews. The trustworthiness and validity of
the research is stated along with a summary of the chapter. The interview is conducted among 6
to 10 managers of non-profit organisations in Massachusetts with the application of qualitative
method of data collection. The managers chosen have an experience of over five years in non-
profit organisations. At the same time themes are developed and analysed that are based on the
research questions and the literature review.
4.2 Trustworthiness or validity
The trustworthiness and validity of the data can be associated with the fact that every data
collected is from reliable sources. The interviews are conducted by making appointments with
managers of the non-profit organisations so that the authenticity of the data can be ensured. The
population of the respondents also contribute in ensuring the validity of the research mainly

because the interview is conducted of managers that have been working in the non-profit
organisations for more than five years. Hence, solidity of information is provided that can help in
understanding and serving the purpose of the research in a proper manner. This has also helped
in developing the themes that are used for conducting research.
In this regard, the factors that impact the interpretation of data collection or analysis can
be stated. According to Lampard and Pole (2015), data collection method is usually of two types,
that is the primary and the secondary sources of collection. At the same time, the qualitative and
quantitative data collection techniques are applied so that reliability of the data can be ensured
(Lewis, 2015). In this case the qualitative data collection method is followed with the application
of primary data collection as it involves interview as a process. Therefore, the factors that impact
the interpreting the data can be in the form of irrelevant data. The irrelevant data includes
information that is not suitable for continuing with the research.
This particular factor can have a negative impact on the research mainly because the
validity of the research cannot be assessed. However, in this dissertation, such factors can be
considered as limited mainly because the results and are derived from experienced managers in
the non-profit organisations. McCusker and Gunaydin (2015) is of the opinion that other factors
may include the unwillingness of the participants to provide response and difficulties in finding
the population that meets the requirement required for the study. The interviews are conducted of
two groups. One of the groups includes the leaders practising corporate philanthropy. A total of 7
questions are asked to the leaders. The second group includes leaders of non-profit organisation
which consists of 3 questions.

4.3 Results
In order to conduct the research in a proper manner it is necessary to identify the themes
that are associated with the development of the research. The themes are based on the research
questions, literature review as well as the interview questions that are framed. The themes can
help in aligning the research with the concepts and provide clear ideas about the importance of
corporate philanthropy and its impact on the non profit organisations in the United States.
Theme 1: Reason for the increase or decrease of dollars in the market
In the modern world it is seen that dollars have been fluctuating at a steady rate in the
market. The rate of dollars has jumped to an all time high and has even plunged to record low.
Therefore, the reason behind the fluctuations can be identified so that proper precautionary
measures can be taken for the development of the corporate philanthropy by maintaining the rate
of dollars in the market. According to Gautier and Pache (2015), one such reason for the
fluctuation of the rate of dollars in the market includes the monetary policy. The monetary policy
of a country may stimulate the economic condition. As stated by Szőcs et al. (2016) attempts are
made to control the demand for currency by providing an increase of money supply to match the
interest rate offered.
Hence, borrowing of money can take place with people aiming to control the amount of
money required for the development of the economic growth. Along with this, other factors
include the rate of inflation that plays a crucial role in influencing the value of the currency. As
pointed out by Gardberg et al. (2017) the general prices of goods and services increase which in
turn help in countering the problem by the rise of rate of interest. Thus, an appreciation of the

currency of a country can be taken into account for the increase of dollars (Gautier & Pache,
2015).
Another important aspect that can be taken place is the fact that the political and
economic condition of the countries contributes in the development of the value of the dollars.
As stated by Bertrand et al. (2017) in the USA, the sudden political turmoil or economic slump
often leads to the fluctuations in the rate of dollars. However, it has been seen that a strong
political connection help in the development of currency values. Therefore, this particular theme
can be aligned with the proper development of the demand and supply of dollars in the country.
Theme 2: Importance of corporate philanthropy for non profit organisations
According to Marquis and Tilcsik (2016), corporate philanthropy is usually undertaken
by a business organisation to promote the welfare of other business in the industry. Charitable
funds or donations are provided for the development of the community and at the same time help
in the development of the non profit organisations. Therefore, an analysis can be made about the
importance of the corporate philanthropy for non profit organisations. As pointed out by Liket
and Simaens (2015) one of the importance of the concept for no profit organisations include the
fact that advance knowledge of the practises can be taken into account with the application of
corporate philanthropy. The manner in which organisations can gain knowledge about the social
problems can help in providing recommendations for the eradication of it.
Hence, it can be said that developing enough knowledge about the non profit
organisations along with the competitors can have a positive impact on the development of
corporate philanthropy. As stated by Qian, Gao and Tsang (2015) another important aspect that
can be associated with the corporate philanthropy is the fact that economic and social objectives

are set in a more distinct manner. Unlike the organisational policies, the application of corporate
philanthropy can help in the development of specific strategies that provides assistance for the
development of economic and social objectives (Gardberg et al., 2017).
In this regard, it can be said that selection of the best alternatives for the development of
the objectives related to social and economic consideration can be made based on the application
of corporate philanthropy in the organisations. Another important factor as pointed out by Li,
Song and Wu (2015) for the development of the corporate philanthropy is the fact that it can help
in the promotion and publicity of the non profit organisations. This can help in attracting the
attention of other donors that are associated in the business so that corporate context can be
undertaken with the development of strengths and weakness in the organisation.
Theme 3: Strategies for the diversification of business
Business diversification can be considered as important for the development and success
in a competitive environment. In the case of non profit organisations, strategies adopted for the
diversification of business can be associated with the destruction of the market value of an
organisation. However, as stated by Peloza, Hassay and Hudson (2015) research has shown that
adoption of a diversified business can help in the development of effective results that may lead
to the rise of the non profit organisations.
Most organisations are ready to take advantage of the situations that provide imperfection
in the marketing scenario. According to Su and Sauerwald (2018), the diversification can be
considered as a manner in which emerging markets can benefit. One of the strategies that can be
taken into account for the diversification of business is the fact that local brand can be made
global. In the case of the non profit organisations in the United States, diversification can have a

direct impact on developing the business from local to global perspective. At the same time,
Hadani and Coombes (2015) stated that redirecting of the strategies that can be used for the
development of the corporate philanthropy in the organisations can be done.
According to Eger, Miller and Scarles (2017), product or service category may have a
separate alignment with the development of the strategies that may also induce the cultural
aspects of an organisation. Another strategy that can be adopted can be associated with the use of
natural resources (Li, Song & Wu, 2015). The use of natural resources can have a deep impact on
the development of an organisation along with the corporate philanthropy that it possesses.
Bertrand et al. (2018) is of the opinion that the strategies can be associated with the application
of business models that can help in the development of the concept of corporate philanthropy.
Therefore, it can be said that the strategies associated with the development of corporate
philanthropy in an organisation located in the United States can have a positive impact on its
development.
Theme 4: Application of corporate philanthropy for growth of business
The theme highlights the application of corporate philanthropy to ensure that business
can grow and ensure long term survival in the market. The associated factors that can be
analysed with the growth of business and the application of corporate philanthropy may include
the shaping of the brand (Liket & Maas, 2016). The manner in which the brand of an
organisation can develop provides for an opportunity of growth and development. The growth
can have a specific impact on the development of an organisation mainly because it can expand
its impact in the market. As stated by Valor and Zasuwa (2017) the brand image plays a vital role
in the development of an organisation as it helps in the promotion of the organisations.

In this regard, it can be said that a link between the importance of corporate philanthropy
and its application for the growth of an organisation can be provided. It has been stated by
Mithani (2017) that for a non profit organisation to succeed, the development of corporate
philanthropy is important so that it can bring about changes in the community. The promotion
can be associated with the brand image mainly because it can help in addressing the limits that
organisations possess. Along with this, target community can be impressed based on the
application of proper corporate philanthropy (Cuypers, Koh & Wang, 2015).
It has been seen that application of corporate philanthropy can help in the development of
financial stability in the market. Petrenko et al. (2016) is of the opinion that organisations that
possess financial stability can continue with its growth and expansion as per the strategies.
Hence, Cha and Abebe (2016) stated that the organisations can gain tax benefits that may help in
the applying the corporate philanthropy in an efficient manner. Thus, it can be said that this
particular theme addresses the major benefit organisations may have on the development of the
corporate philanthropy.
4.4 Evaluation of findings
Findings provide an analysis of the results and the proper interpretation that can be made
from the application of the data. From the analysis of the first theme it can be seen that various
factors affect the fluctuation of dollars in the USA. As stated by Schlegelmilch and Szőcs (2015)
the monetary policies, political and economic factors along with the rate of inflation plays crucial
role in the development of the dollars in the country. The relation of the findings can be made
with that of the responses provided by the leaders during the interview.

The interview question number 4 addressed to the leaders practising corporate
philanthropy sheds light to the fact that these factors are the main reasons for the development of
the fluctuations of dollars. Therefore, it can be said that managers need to curb the situations by
taking strategic measures that can help in the development of the non profit organisations and
help in its implementation of corporate philanthropy in the organisations (Cuypers, Koh &
Wang, 2015). As pointed out by Bereskin, Campbell and Hsu (2016) the manner in which
marketers continuously monitor the growth of the economy may help in the prediction of the
economic condition in the country.
Along with this the analysis of the themes provides an analysis of the support that
political factors provide for the development of the rate of dollars. According to Raub (2017),
this can be linked with the fact that an exact reason for the fluctuation of currency as well as the
prediction of demand and supply of the currencies can be taken into account. Overall as pointed
out by McHugh et al. (2018) it can be said that steady growth of the economy along with the
currency tend to appreciate the demands of the dollars so that an increase of the rate of dollars
cannot be maintained in the market.
The second theme analyses the importance of corporate philanthropy for non profit
organisations. It has been seen that corporate philanthropy contributes heavily for the
development of an organisation (Pan et al., 2018). Without corporate philanthropy, it can be
difficult for organisations to continue with the social and economic gains that can be extracted
from a community. Therefore, the fact that it provides specific objectives for the development of
such gains can be considered as important. According to Arco-Castro et al. (2018), the particular
analysis of the theme can be linked with the research question as well as the interviews since the
importance can be linked with the responses.

For example, from the interview question 7 asked to the leaders using corporate
philanthropy, it has been seen that the responses are aligned with the fact that such a concept
helps in the development of the social and economic objectives. Along with this, as stated by
Adams, Hoejmose and Kastrinaki (2017) an advanced knowledge of the non profit organisations
that exist in the market can be gained with the adoption of corporate philanthropy. This is mainly
because the application of corporate philanthropy is made for the development of an organisation
and the community. It has been seen that the non profit companies in the United States can
facilitate the global knowledge required for the transferring of new social initiatives across the
country (Liket & Maas, 2016).
In a small state of Massachusetts, the development of non profit organisations for the
corporate philanthropy can help in the development of business in various areas. According to
Chen and Lin (2015), the impact that is generated can be associated with the application of
modern equipments so that the importance of corporate philanthropy can be put to test.
Therefore, it can be said that the alignment of the theme with the interview and research
questions help in the development of proper research that culminates in the development as well
as adaptation of corporate philanthropy in the non profit organisations in the United States
(Bereskin, Campbell & Hsu, 2016).
The third theme analyses the strategies that can be incorporated for the diversification of
business in the non profit organisations. According to Eger, Miller and Scarles (2017), the theme
can be associated with the analysis of the literature review that provides an analysis of the factors
associated with the development of the corporate philanthropy in the non profit organisations. In
this regard, as stated by Crowther and Seifi (2018) it can be said that for the non profit
organisations to prosper in the business market, it is necessary the companies associated develop

its business based on the corporate philanthropy. The link can be made with the literature review
mainly because the concept has been addressed in the literature review section by taking
examples of various organisations and the countering the words of the scholars.
In this regard, it can be said that for a philanthropic approach that need to be considered,
the application of the strategies such as development of specific business model as well as the
natural resources can be considered as a method of growing competitive advantage for the non
profit organisations. According to Unit (2015), the associated organisations located in the United
States can develop from local markets to the global phenomenon based on the application of the
strategies. Therefore, the global services that are provided by the non profit organisations can be
assisted with the development of the value of dollars in the society.
As stated by Hopkins (2016) the development of a global market brand can help the non
profit organisations in the United States to gain the recognition it requires in the market. It can be
pointed out that the strategies may not always provide success to the non profit organisations
mainly because of the timing associated with its development. Hence, in this regard, the findings
based from the literature review can be aligned with the purpose of developing the theme that
provides for the benefit of the non profit organisations in the market.
The fourth theme analyses the application of corporate philanthropy for the growth of the
non profit organisations. Valor and Zasuwa (2017) provided evidence about the fact that the
manner in which the concept can help in the development of the non profit organisations can
help in the growth of the reputation of the companies. In this regard, a link can be made with the
interview that sets about in identifying the reasons behind the growth of the companies. The
interview question number 1 addressed for the leaders of the non profit organisations can be

associated with the application of corporate philanthropy for the growth of the non profit
organisations. In the interview it has been seen that some of the leaders believe that non profit
organisations can gain financially with the application of corporate philanthropy.
This can be supported with the fact that tax benefits are provided to the organisations that
are associated with the application of the corporate philanthropy in its business (Mithani, 2017).
In this regard, it can be said that for the non profit organisations branding can be considered as a
major requirement so that it growth and expansion in the international market can take place.
Petrenko et al. (2016) is of the opinion that this can be associated with the importance that
corporate philanthropy has on the development of an organisation as the significance of branding
can be based on the development of organisational benefits.
Chen and Lin (2015) stated that in the non profit organisations in the United States,
impressions of the target community can be made so that the services provided can meet the
requirements. At the same time, the interview also show that corporate philanthropy dollars have
witnessed major increase in the last fiscal year which in turn justifies the fact that non profit
organisations do gain major tax benefits with the application of the corporate philanthropy.
However, major loss in the revenue can also be evidenced from the interview that needs to be
controlled by the organisations.
4.5 Summary
Therefore, based on the analysis of the themes, it can be said that the application and
importance of corporate philanthropy is essential for the development of a non profit
organisation. The manner in which the concept can help in the development of the non profit
organisations in the United States can be associated with its growth and development. The

chapter helps in identifying the topic as well as ensure that the trustworthiness and the validity of
the data are maintained based on the interview session that is conducted. From the chapter,
themes can be developed that helps in aligning the interview questions with that of the research
questions that are crucial for the development of the non profits.
The themes highlight the practises associated with the development and application of
corporate philanthropy in the non profit organisations in the United States. The themes also help
to understand the application of the corporate social responsibility in the development of
corporate philanthropy for the organisations. In this regard, it can be said that the interviews of
the leaders associated with the application of the corporate philanthropy and the non profit
organisations sheds valuable insight about the themes. Link can be made with the interviews and
the research questions so that corporate philanthropy can be implemented.
Therefore, it can be said that the results of the themes and the findings associated with the
development of the non profit organisations can be aligned with the questions set in the research.
Hence, recommendation can be provided about the manner in which corporate philanthropy can
be used for practise as well as for future prospects.
CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.1 Introduction
The dissertation focuses on the importance of corporate philanthropy on the non profit
organisations in the United States. The dissertation has managed to cover critical areas that
outline the concept of corporate philanthropy and its importance on the non profit organisations
in the United States. The area covered to analyse is Massachusetts and the mode of survey
undertaken is the interview and thematic analysis. The importance and the application of the

corporate philanthropy are stated and the interview questions are based on the research questions
so that an alignment can be made with the literature review. The themes are set as per the
interview questions so that validity and reliability of data can be maintained.
One of the themes includes identifying the reason for the increase or decrease of dollars
in the market. The theme is explained by the effects that cause the fluctuation of dollars in the
market. The second theme explains the importance of corporate philanthropy for non profit
organisations. In this theme the important factors that relate corporate philanthropy with the non
profit organisations are explained. The application of the concept is justified in the theme. The
third theme analyses the strategies used for the diversification of business. The theme states the
diversification of business and the manner in which it can help in the development of strategies
that are associated with it. The final theme provides the application of corporate philanthropy for
growth of business. In this particular theme the application of the concept on enhancing the
prospects of business for the non profit organisations are provided.
The particular chapter provides a conclusion to the dissertation with focus on the
implications of corporate philanthropy on non profit organisations. The manner in which
corporate philanthropy can be used by the non profit organisations are provided as
recommendations with emphasis on the future research that can take place on the topic. An
overall conclusion is also provided that helps in summarising the points associated with the
dissertation.
5.2 Implications
The implication of the corporate philanthropy in the non profit organisations can be
estimated by the popularity it provides to the organisations. It has already been established from

Therefore, proper implication of the concept can help in the management of the reputation of the
organisations and based on the reputation non profit organisations can gain scope of expansion.
At the same time, it can be said that corporate philanthropy sets about the economic and social
objectives of an organisation.
As stated in the themes, corporate philanthropy can help in the development of objectives
such as social or economic that can be aligned with the organisational objectives. Along with
this, the fact that corporate philanthropy can help organisations gain knowledge about the market
also provides non profit organisations with an opportunity to gain importance in the market.
However, the biggest implementation of corporate philanthropy is the fact that it helps in the
development of the community. Corporate philanthropy aligns its application with the strategies
of the non profit organisations so that it can continue with the development of the society.
Therefore, it can be said that with the implementation of corporate philanthropy, every non profit
organisation can continue with the development and expansion of the business.
Another implementation of corporate philanthropy for non profit organisation is the fact
it can signal other organisations with similar motto. This is mainly because non profit
organisations work simultaneously with the aim of developing a society. Working in a united
manner can also mitigate the negative impact of the economic fluctuations that exist. Hence, the
rapid increase or decrease of the value of dollars can be mitigated if the non-profit organisations
can seek contributors from overseas market and use the currency value of the overseas market to
ensure maintain its business prowess.

5.3 Recommendation for practise
After the analysis of the themes and the interviews of the leader using corporate
philanthropy and working in non profit organisations, recommendations can be made about the
manner in which corporate philanthropy can be applied in an effectively. One of the
recommendations that can be provided is in the application of corporate philanthropy to specific
business models. As seen from the literature review, the adoption of corporate philanthropy as a
strategy is to apply it in various business markets. The literature review also states that
organisations involved with the developed nations enjoy more success than the underdeveloped
nations.
Therefore, it can be said that recommendations can be made for the underdeveloped
nations about the application of corporate philanthropy. As seen from the analysis of the
interview as well as the themes, effective application of corporate philanthropy can help in
setting strategic and economic objectives. Hence, it is necessary for the underdeveloped
countries to apply the concept and ensure that management of the economic condition can be
made. This can also help in mitigating the impact of the fluctuation of dollars as the currency
value can be set as per the fluctuations. The method that can be followed while trying to
implement this particular recommendation in the United States non profit organisation is the fact
that an approach can be made while trying to earn funding sources that are cheaper.
At the same time, the non profit organisations in the United States can associate itself
with the emerging markets mainly due to the high growth potential it shows. Hence, the
application of the corporate philanthropy in the non profit organisation can help it to grow in the
international market by virtue of the brand development. Hence, it can be said that for the

development of non profit organisations, the application of corporate philanthropy for gaining
international stature can be considered as prudent.
5.4 Recommendation for future research
Future researchers can learn from the research and build confidence about the manner in
which thematic analysis can be carried out for the development of a research. It is important that
researchers understand the impact of corporate social responsibility so that development of the
non profit organisations can take place. It is also necessary that future researchers can understand
the impact of corporate philanthropy while trying to develop the non profit organisations in
markets outside the United States. This can be evidenced from the literature review as developed
countries have been seen to implement corporate philanthropy in a more strategic manner.
Hence, it can be said that for the development of corporate philanthropy future
researchers can understand the impact along with the implementation. Future researchers can
improve upon the study by developing the corporate social responsibility required for the
development of the non profit organisations. However, the limitation of the corporate
philanthropy is the fact that it can only be applied to the non profit organisations in the US for
the dissertation. In this case the next logical step would be to identify the impact of corporate
social responsibility that can be implemented in organisations outside the US.
5.5 Conclusion
Therefore, based on the analysis and the recommendations it can be concluded that
corporate philanthropy is one of the most important aspects for the development of non profit
organisation. The importance of the dissertation is to identify the impact of corporate
philanthropy on the non profit organisations in the United States and the manner in which

fluctuations in dollars affect its application. The problem is based on the application of the
concept so that non profit organisations can gain importance in the business. The themes are
aligned with the interview questions and the research questions so that development of the
dissertation can be made in an effective manner. It is stated in both the analysis of the themes
and the literature review that the importance of corporate philanthropy can be aligned with the
development of the marketing of the non profit organisations. The recommendations highlight
the impact that developing countries can make with the application of corporate philanthropy for
analysing the economic and social conditions of the business. Hence, it can be said that for the
development of corporate philanthropy it is necessary that every non profit organisation try to
develop its base in developed countries so that more utilisation of the corporate philanthropy can
be made. Hence, the message that can be identified from the dissertation is that corporate
philanthropy is important for the development and growth of organisations all over the world.
