General information
Please note that this Task requires responses to 12 questions. PART A = 4x
mandatory questions to answer, and PART B = restricted choice of 8x short-
answer, multiple choice, and yes/no questions to answer.
This 1st assignment is an Open Book/Resource Task. An Open Book/Resource Task
means that you have full access to your subject resources, texts, readings, and notes in
Announcements, as well as the SUB-Forum [though you may NOT COPY work
directly from the Forum, AND ESPECIALLY THE WORK OF OTHER PEOPLE].
Please submit by 11:45 pm via EASTS, no later than Monday 18 March.
Ensure you present work that can be marked easily; that is, save only in an early
version of Word document [NO .pdf – these cannot be marked up with feedback].
For any issues – please email or contact me, HCS102 Subject Convenor/Coordinator
ichida@csu.edu.au
The task will only be concerned with those published materials made available to you
through Interact2, plus the prescribed textbook, but you may use other resources.
Please do not offer advice, of any kind, to each other in respect to this task, and
especially NOT on any of the sub-Forums. Also, do not collaborate in completing
this task, by discussion in emails, Forums, study group, or by other means, for
example with a Learning Advisor. There is an ethical expectation around academic
and professional conduct of students implied in offering the task this way.
Submission
You can submit only once; check you have met all requirements, before doing so.
Ensure that when you save your completed assignment, keep within the character
limit that EASTS asks for [it is okay to name it HCS102A1 for example – the system
generates its own cover sheet for your work – you do not have to do that].
You can submit just those pages you use to answer the questions of your choice.
Marking – how much are the answers worth?
All questions are of equal value [for example, /4].
Partially correct answers will receive a proportion of the available marks [for
example, 2/4].

Marking criteria
Answers will be marked against the relevant marking Rubric Table in the Subject
Outline; check that the answers MUST include:
Whole sentences – no bullet points
Short answers of 4-6 sentences maximum [= one paragraph]

follow the APA formatting guidelines.
Instructions for Completing the Assessment Task
1. Save the assessment/assignment task from the Folder set up in the side menu bar of
Interact 2, as a Word document. The task is provided in a couple of Word document
formats for downloading and/or printing off if required.
2. In Part A, all 4 questions/tasks must be addressed – that is, these are
compulsory/mandatory. An incomplete PART A, or any avoidance to answer any of
the four questions could result in the work being returned for a resubmit to gain a
Pass only for this assignment.
3. In Part B, there is a ‘restricted choice’; questions are a mix of short answer,
true/false and multiple choice options. There is no requirement that you answer
particular types of questions. However, this Part B is divided into four general topic
areas and you can only choose two questions from each topic area, to answer. That is,
you cannot choose all 8 questions from the one topic.
4. Write your name and student number on every page that you submit. Ensure that
answers to questions/tasks are numbered correctly. For example, in Part B, you
might choose to answer Questions 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, – then that is how they
should be numbered on your submitted work – NOT 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, [unless those
are the actual questions you have chosen].

1. How might the analogy of an iceberg be used to reflect your understanding of the value
of exploring communication, more deeply?
To carry forward the iceberg metaphor, every individual can be represented as an iceberg
with greater part of themselves deeply submerged. Ice berg of every individual come together
at a place where human can connect one another unconsciously. This realm was named by
psychiatrist Carl Jung as ‘Collective Unconscious’. This is referred to as the area of the mind
where all human beings share their experiences. The experiences of the past lives are drawn
from this unconscious level’s. It is understood that the unconscious connection under the
iceberg among individuals is more powerful than the conscious level connection and the
healing work is done by an important consideration.
2. Kaye (2010; or 2013; or 2014) argues that it is important to adopt ‘an adult
communication management model’ in relation to communication competence. Use the
ideas within the Matryoushka Doll Analogy to provide a short outline of his model, and
indicate how your own understanding of communication links to those ideas?
In ‘Communication management book of Kaye, a model is provided that connects the level of
systems communication, interpersonal and intrapersonal to competence. The adult
communication management model depicts the process of communication as a Russian
Matryoushka dolls (Kishore et al.,2018). Among the four dolls, the perspective of
intrapersonal communication is represented by the innermost doll which says that
understanding and knowing oneself is an important step. A perspective of observable
relationship is represented in the interpersonal doll where the objective is on interpersonal
communication among people where the individuals who are creating meanings about one
another and regarding the state and nature of their relationship. The effects of organizations
and human systems on communication among people are represented in this doll. The outer
doll is the competence doll and must be regarded as applying to all the three dolls mentioned
above. This model is a useful and an intelligible tool that helps in analysing different scopes
of communication competence in a broad range of context.

3. Referring to the Learning Modules, describe as precisely and as fully as possible, what
do you understand by the term ‘Ethos of Scholarship’?
Ethos can be defined as character that is used for describing the guiding ideals and beliefs
which characterize an ideology, nation or community. From an online bio of scholar Jeffrey
Stout (Stout, 2019) it can be noticed how the bio is making an effort to establish ethos of Stout
from two different directions. The bio provides that Stout has academic credentials i.e. couple
of degrees from highly respected institutions and it points his political credibility as an
activist. When PHD is seen beginning of an author’s name, people are likely to believe them.
These three letter word i.e. PHD on the cover has a significance in establishing ethos.
4. Visit Primo Search [through the CSU Library link] and access the reading by Thompson
and Thompson (2008). What are one or two significant ideas from the authors that give
you a better understanding about ‘reflective practice’?
Drawing on Knowledge
According to the author, Reflective practice involves thinking that assists an individual to
make sense of his/her practice, how to respond best and what is necessary. In other words, it
is the thinking that draws on knowledge (Thompson & Thompson, 2008). The type of
knowledge that an individual has explicit awareness is referred to as open knowledge
whereas, closed knowledge is the type that individual draws on indirectly without having any
direct awareness of it.
