1. INTRODUCTION
Proper team work as well as communication define as the most essential element for each
and every business entity in order to develop positive working condition at the business
organisation. This will assist the employees of the organization in order to interact with their
subordinates and to accomplish organizational goals and targets within specific time period. It
has also been identified that effective communication highly influence the whole teamwork in
negative as well as positive manner (Maund, Schriek, Tinkler 2017). Therefore, it is essential for
the staff members to communicate with their peers in an effective manner so they can share
healthy relationship with each other. The current report is based on a case study where due to
ineffective communication an issue arise between two parties are going to be discussed. The
present report made a discussion about effective communication at the workplace as well as its
impact on the overall functioning.
2. Models of Communication
Models of communication define as the conceptual models which is commonly used to
discuss the human communication procedure in a detailed manner. Some of the most effective
models of communication are going to be discussed as follows:
Shannon and Weaver Model of communication
The Shannon and Weaver Model of Communication is a mathematical theory of
communication that argues that human communication can be broken down into 6 key concepts:
sender, encoder, channel, noise, decoder, and receiver. All these are the most common element
of this model which are discussed as follows:
Sender (Information source): The first and foremost element is sender where the person makes
the whole message, select the best channel and sends the message to receiver (Morgan 2016).
Encoder (Transmitter): It define as the machine which is uses by the sender with the help of
which message is being converted into signals and binary data.
Channel: This refers to the medium which is selected by the sender in order to send the message.
Receiver (Destination): This is the person who gets the message send by sender and then he
provides feedback to the sender as per the message.
Noise: It define as the physical disturbances such as people, environment and medium which
interrupt in order to get the message by receiver.

According to the present case, Max is a person who started his own business from his home
where they provide services and organise events such as Birthday party, Weddings, anniversary
and many more. Tamara is one of his client who wants to organise a party for her parents on their
50th anniversary. Max is the only one who arrange all the things as well as talk to clients which is
quite hectic for him (Belbin, 2012). As per the Shannon and Weaver model in this case study
Max is the receiver and Tamara is the sender where noise can be considered as Max was on
another phone call. Because of the noise Max was unable to understand and receive the message
which was send by Tamara. It has been said that according to this framework a sender encodes
the message and then send it to the receiver with the help of a technological channel such as
telegraph and telephone. Later receiver needs to convert or decode the message and for which
receptor machine acts as the decoder. Because of ineffective communication between both the
parties this as a result leads towards miscommunication where Max was not being able to fulfil
the requirements of Tamara on time (Belbin, 2010). This as a result says that due to ineffective
communication the overall business gets affected in a negative manner.
Schramm Model of Communication
The Osgood-Schramm model is built on the theory that communication is a two-way street,
with a sender and a receiver. Charles Egerton Osgood popularized the notion that communication
was circular rather than linear, meaning that it required two participants taking turns sending and
receiving a message. This is a model used for adding the notion of field of experience, or
commonality, to the mix. Field of experience incorporates what is mutually understood between
the sender and receiver. In addition to this, it has also been said that as per the Schramm’s model
the two most essential procedure of effective communication is coding and decoding. It has also
been emphasized that an effective communication is not complete until the sender of message
receives the feedback from receiver (Tuckman, and Harper, 2012). Therefore, it is said that in
the whole process of sending and receiving messages feedback is quite effective factor without
which whole communication process is not complete. Furthermore, Schramm believes that a
person knowledge, cultural background as well as experience plays very important role in the
whole communication process.
In addition to this, it is said that any kind of communication in which sender does not get any
kind of feedback then the communication is not completed fully and is ineffective. Similarly in
case of Max and Tamara, sender is Tamara who sends the message to Max but she is not getting

feedback that Max gets her message and not. This is one of the biggest mistake which is usually
done by sender and receiver (Morgan, 2016). Therefore, as per Schramm model it is very
necessary for an effective communication that sender get feedback from receiver related to the
message which ensures that message is being received by the recipient. This as a result help in
eliminating any kind of issues and mistakes and conduct all the functions in an effective and
appropriate manner.
Berlo SMCR model of communication
It is said that in order to improve communication as well as reduce communication barrier
there is a model developed in the year 1960 by David Berlo. The Berlo’s Sender-Message-
Channel-Receiver (SMCR) model of communication emphasis on the process of encoding and
decoding. He also described ample number of elements which might affect the individuals
component. By using this model, an individual can effectively improve their communication
skills which leads towards effective communication and produce positive outcomes. Apart from
this, there must be effective listening within the workplace so that they can create positive
working environment at the business entity (Maund, Schriek and Tinkler, 2017). In addition to
this, it has also been said that there must be proper two way communication along with proper
listening skills. This will aid in creating positive results and encourage staff members to conduct
all their operations in a fruitful way.
Berlo’s SMCR Model of Communication represents the process of communication in its
simplest form. The acronym SMCR stands for Sender, Message, Channel, and Receiver. Berlo’s
SMCR Model of Communication describes the different components that form the basic process
of communication. Because this communication tool also emphasizes the coding and decoding of
the message, it can be used for more efficient communication. Components of Berlo’s model are
going to be discussed as follows:
Sender: Sender define as the person who usually creates the message or information and
sends the message to the receiver (Morgan, 2017). Fir this, sender must have effective
communication skills, sufficient knowledge about the topic so that they can easily communicate
or send the message.
Message: This is what which is being send by the sender to the receiver. The message can
be in an form written, voice, video, audio or any other way. There must be effective and accurate

content with proper structure and in systematic manner. Also the message must be in such
language which can easily be understood by the receiver.
Channel: This refers to the medium which is used by sender in order to send message.
These channels can be telephone, internet or any other technical machines. Along with this, in
reference to general communication the basic five senses of human being might affect the
communication flow and highly affect the effectiveness of the channel. These senses are hearing,
seeing, touching, smelling and tasting.
Receiver: The person who gets the message is receiver. It has also been said that the
thinking pattern of both receiver and sender must be same so that effect of the message must be
same. Therefore receiver must have effective listening skills
In relation to the present case study, Tamara and Max both are unable to communicate in
am effective manner which makes their relation worst (Warde, Giannitrapani and Pearson,
2020). But it is also required by Tamara to understand the situation of Max and communicate
with him in a proper manner in order to give him a chance related to the mistake done by them.
3. Communication Skill
Communication define as the process of conveying and sharing ideas, thoughts and
information from one to another person with the help of signs, symbols, words and many more
elements. It is quite necessary while working in a team to convey messages and information on a
regular basis and interact with them regularly so it will help in creating positive working
condition at the workplace. As a result it will directly affects the performance of team members
as well as of the whole organization (Livingstone, Deighton and Luther, 2020). If
communication between employee or team members are not effective it will create disputes,
conflicts and issues which influence their whole performance in a negative manner. Therefore, it
becomes necessary for the leaders to motivate and encourage their employees to build
coordination among them which help them to accomplish favourable results within the
organization.
Verbal Communication
It refers to the communication which is done by words whether by spoken or written. It has
been said that verbal communication refers to the use of auditory language in order to exchange

information from one person to another (Hartley and Elowitz, 2020). This includes words,
sounds, speaking. In addition to this, if talking about verbal communication at workplace it can
be arise by talking or answering the phone call, giving information over telephone, group
discussion, receiving and giving information through instructions.
Non verbal Communication
In reference to non verbal communication the communication is being conducted between
two persons through nonverbal as well as visual cues. It includes body movements, facial
expressions, touch, gestures and postures in order to share information without speaking. There
must be proper eye contact, clear communication between the parties, proper postures and
gestures.
If there is poor communication then the performance of team will be reduced and negatively
affect the overall outcome of the business entity (Taylor & Francis.Valor-Segura, and et.
al.,2020). For instance, if all the necessary information is not effectively transferred in a correct
manner then it will affect the whole performance in an adverse. This as a result affect the
chances of meeting goals and objectives of the company. Therefore, it is said that effective and
proper communication is one of the essential aspect at workplace which raises the performance
of employees and motivate them to conduct all their functions in a well defined manner.
4. CONCLUSION
With the assistance of above stated information, it is concluded that within a business
entity for creating positive working atmosphere effective team work and communication is quite
essential. For this both employee and employer are equally responsible for creating positive
relationship between team members with the help of communicating each other at the workplace.
As a result it will eliminate the chances of arising conflicts and issues from the workplace which
as a result increase the level of performance and efficiency of staff members. It has also been
analysed that because of working in a team help in generating innovative ideas and thoughts in
order to accomplish pre define targets in more effective and attractive manner. Therefore,
conducting various team activities considered as a beneficial method which help in developing
positive relationship with the other members.
