Modeling Electronic Health Records System using Sequence Diagram and Behavioral State Machines_1

Modeling of the systems is an important aspect that makes it possible to determine the
interaction of the system with its users. Different types of models can be used to but in this case,
only two have been selected. First, sequence diagrams are used to model how the system
interacts with its users. The second model adopted in this case is the behavioral state machines
model. The behavioral state machine models are mainly used to predict the usefulness of the
system. It is mainly done by observing how the system changes from one state to the other.
Set of the sequence diagram
For Electronic Health Records (EHR), a sequence diagram seems to be an important
aspect that predicts user actions and system responses. The electronic health records have for
main users and several use cases that can be modeled. The first set of the user in the system is the
physician who seems to be the dominant actor of the EHR system. It is observable that without a
physician, EHR would not be interactive as required. It is through a physician that the system
interaction processes are initiated and patients are first attended. There is a chronological order
of the processes in this case because unless medicine order is initiated by the physician, it is
almost impossible to have any form of working Electronic Health Records. The next actor in the
system is pharmacists which seems to have a major role in checking stock availability and
making orders in cases where some drugs are out of the stock. It is the pharmacist who validates
the order placed by the physician and if not available or its invalid, makes the necessary
decisions. In this regard, it would be important to note that pharmacists should make sure all
drugs are available to avoid unnecessary drug change.
The next actor is pharmacist tech which processes all medical orders required by the
patients’. The orders are processed based on first come first served because the first order is
usually placed on top of the queue. Once processing and packaging are done, drugs are taken to
