My Portfolio
Profile
Currently, I am undertaking a nursing degree course at Western Sydney University.
Before joining the institution, I had completed two certificate courses in aged care. I passed
both programs with high grades hence being compelled to pursue a nursing degree. Also, I
have a nursing proficiency certificate from Mayadevi training college. As an aspiring
graduate nurse, I am a critical thinker who relies on understanding the problem before
seeking possible solutions. Throughout my career, I have developed into being an emphatic
listener in conversations. For instance, when handling delivery cases, I prefer listening to
what my clients say before providing my response. Regarding my work experienced, I was
recruited as a maternal and neonatal health supervisor in Nepal. After being recognized as
an outstanding employee in the facility, I later secured an assistant nursing position in
Uniting Nursing home. As a dedicated student, I aspire to be a community nurse focused on
empowering and educating pregnant women in marginalised areas. In this role, I will seek
to sensitize women the importance of antenatal checkups and the possible dangers they face
when pregnant. According to the fourth standard of nurses’ code of conduct, nursing
professionals need to make use of the available information to improve on midwifery
conditions (NMBA, 2018). Therefore, I intend to partner with other professionals in the
field to identify the emerging dangers that pregnant women are exposed to in society.
Through the use of appropriate medical equipment, I will evaluate the current medical
information and provide suitable approaches to the problems experienced in midwifery. I
also intend to use the analyzed data to sensitize communities in rural areas the importance
of seeking clinical support regularly.

PORTFOLIO
I am seeking to attend an annual national antenatal nursing conference to gain more
knowledge of the possible ways of upholding safe practice standards in nursing. The
information disseminated in such meetings is vital in my development as an aspiring
graduate nurse.
I also intend to enrol in an antenatal certificate course from a renowned college in
Australia. The successful completion of this program will provide me with enough
skills and hands-on experience to effectively handle pregnancy cases in the nursing
field.
Finally, I aspire to join the Australia antenatal nursing association to gain
knowledge from other professionals on the best ways of handling pregnancy cases
in marginalised areas. Moreover, I will use my position in the association to
discover the risks that are currently faced by pregnant women in various regions.
Critical Reflection
In this segment, I will make use of Gibbs (1988) cycle to reflect on the recent work
experience in Nepal. During my early years in nursing, I had a firsthand experience of
eclampsia. As an antenatal nurse in the remote areas of Nepal, the majority of pregnant
women I came across complained of severe headaches, abdominal pain, vision changes and
dizziness. The situation was horrifying with most pregnant women exhibiting signs and
symptoms relating the advanced stage of eclampsia. According to Manandhar,
Chongstuvivatwong and Geater (2013), eclampsia is responsible for the majority of fetus
deaths experienced among pregnant women in marginalized areas. During the nursing
expedition, I witnessed a community whose access to clinical nursing is a challenge. With
only scarce health facilities in the area, the death toll of pregnant mothers was on the rise.

PORTFOLIO
Being an aspiring nurse, I felt disturbed by the debilitating conditions that pregnant women
faced. With limited access to neonatal checkups, I felt pity and perturbed by the harsh
situation I witnessed. However, nurses need to provide their best care irrespective of the
challenges posed by the job at hand. Even though I was thrilled and motivated to help, I felt
less experienced to handle the level of eclampsia harbored by pregnant women in the area.
Having never done a medical investigation nor a neonatal checkup in my career, my input
in solving the issue was limited. Nonetheless, the experience provided me with an
appropriate platform to practice what I had learnt in my earlier nursing course. Through
experiencing pregnancy risks in real life, I realized that it is essential for a nurse to carry out
enough research on the possible illnesses to provide quality care. Experience alone cannot
guarantee better services from a nursing perspective. If I had undergone an antenatal
training course, I would have gained enough skills to handle the situation. Therefore, in the
future, I will seek to learn all the vital aspects related to antenatal checkups and eclampsia.
Moreover, I will attempt to uphold fundamental ethical and nursing standards when dealing
with pregnant women. Besides the acquisition of relevant nursing knowledge, I will seek to
gain more experience of midwifery in marginalized areas. Based on the case witnessed in
Nepal, I am focused on providing quality nursing services for the neglected women in
marginalized areas. If I experience a similar case scenario in the future, I will seek to make
use of antenatal care and equipment to cushion pregnant women of the dangers of
eclampsia. Also, I would sensitize people in rural areas the importance of antenatal
checkups. Despite such areas having less clinical facilities, I would advise the community
at large to make use of the limited available resources for their overall wellbeing.
