Absenteeism mainly comprises of the time that is taken off by an employee from work
due to illness or any other reasons for staying away from work (Sajayan and et. al., 2021). Thus,
absenteeism is one of the main reason and cause for reduction in the performance and
productivity level of a company as it leads to unproductive workforce and teams and also creates
unnecessary delays and mismanagement at the workplace. Therefore, many companies of the
world have started to have more focus and emphasis on the employee engagement programmes
that helps in reducing the issue of absenteeism.
Main Body
Employee engagement programmes basically comprises of the strategy and initiatives that
are taken by the company to make their employees feel for passionate and committed with their
work. Thus, employee engagement is something that drives higher performance and present
about the extent to which the emolyess of a firm feel passionate and motivated towards there
work. High employee absenteeism has become a major cause of decline in the productivity and
performance level of a firm as it leads to habitual absence of employee from work that can be
due to family issue, illness and job dissatisfaction (Ackers and Adebayo, 2021). Therefore, the
companies like Tesco, Microsoft, Marks and Spencer, Aston martin and many more have started
to focus on employee engagement program to ensure higher retention of talented worker along
with reducing their absenteeism level.
Tesco believes in offering a comfortable workplace environment along with fairly
compensated salary and other incentives for its employees as a part of its employee engagement
programme. It has been analysed that the comfortable and positive workplace environment
creates a positive physiological impact on the mind and body of the employees that motivates
them to remain present at their job role and reduce the chances of the absenteeism. Further,
regular performance based monetary rewards provided by the Tesco also meets the financial
needs of the employees and make them more motivated and commuted towards their work to

programmes is being adopted that focus on making employees feel important and worthily along
with connected with overall aim and objective of the firm that creates a higher zeal and improved
retention. Continuous communication and proper involvement of employees is being ensured
within the Aston Martin to make them feel motivated and valued through adopting use of
participative leadership. Along with this, regular training and development programs is being
also adopted by the Aston martin to build higher confidence and skill level in its employees to
reduce the intentional and habitual absence of employees through making their work more
comfortable and dutiable manner through having priory guidance and direction (Rhoades,
Waguespack and Ambrose, 2021). Along with this, an option of the flexible working has been
also adopted within the Aston martin that reduce the absenteeism level and habitual absence of
employee from work through meeting their working needed and allowing a better coordination
between work and personal life.
Thus, an analysis can be made that the companies had started to focus on developing
improved employee engagement programmes that tend to be a good idea for having reduction in
the absenteeism as it supports improved level of passion and commitment in employees towards
their work. It has been analysed that the absenteeism creates many issues and side effects within
a firm that comprises of higher administration cost, increased labour cost along with
understaffing that leads to poor customer services and negative morale among team and
colleagues (Verčič, 2021). Thus, it has become vital and important to come up with the improved
employee engagement strategy and programme that plays a vital role in reducing theses issues.
Employee engagement programmes supports improved mental strength and comfortable working
atmosphere through leading a positive connection with the employees so that they can share their
emotions and feelings about the workplace. Adoption of effective communication along with
supporting regular feedback from employees by the companies ensure better understanding about
the actual needs and desires of the employee fulfilment of which creates higher performance and

programmes within the companies consists of the fact that it leads to better team performance
and also supports enhanced employee engagement productivity through creating a higher sense

ensures and leads to a more satisfied and engaged employee who feel more motivated and
committed towards their objective and job role thus, does not leave and remain absent from their

internal zeal has been created by the employee engagement programme together with feeling of
being valued and respected that creates fully present employees who show up higher excitement
and innovation in work to achieve the highest level of performance. Further, employee
engagement programme also reduces the level of workplace frustration and judgement through
supporting positive workplace relationship that leads to positive workplace behaviour along with
reduction in sick days and casual leaves which reduce the absenteeism level (Katsoni and
