1. Problem statement
Employee engagement plays an important role in human resource management of any
firm. This factor not only connects all parts of HRM in firm but also helps in assigning
responsibilities to people according to their capability (Shafer, 1998). Thus, helps in
improving work performance.
In today’s competitive world, organisations take keen interest in employee’s participation
by building team work along with providing satisfactory wages and many other allowances to
retain competitive staff in the firm ( Markos & Sridevi , 2010). In a global company like
McDonald’s, dealing with fast food chain business and managing human resources have
become very difficult due to diversified needs of consumer preferences in different countries
(McDonalds, 2018). Even many food and beverage companies nowadays offer online food
purchases along with restaurant facility whereas others deal only with website purchases and
door delivery service. In such conditions, employee engagement becomes the only way that
helps organisation build a foundation so that mismanagement is avoided along with making
stronger prediction of organisational needs with joint effort ( Kaliannan & Adjovu, 2015).
Companies having employees’ engagement have higher employee retention rates that
results directly in workforce performance and customer satisfaction (Karunaratne, 2016).
On the other hand, organisations that have disengaged staff suffers with loses and waste of
effort. They even face absenteeism and less productivity that reduces profit margins.
Researchers emphasise more on positive and significance of employee engagement on
business outcomes. Although, cost- benefit analysis can also be evaluated before making
engagement decisions ( Osborne & Hammoud, 2017).
