INTRODUCTION
Equality and diversity is a part of multiculturalism which involves the idea of accepting
and promoting differences among people. In more accurate way, equality is to ensure fair and
equal treatment for all individuals without considering their age, gender, religion, disability or
race. When all these differences are recognised and respected, this is termed as diversity. Main
aim behind promoting diversity is develop an all-inclusive environment. This present report is
based on The King's School which is Britain based coeducational public school, situated in
Canterbury, Kent (Armstrong, Masterton and Potts, 2013). It is considered as oldest school
which is continually operating since 597 AD. This assignment includes the merits of diversity
and equality in creating safe and enabling learning atmosphere along with strategies to achieve
them. Also, ways to promote equality in school and society are discussed in detail which will
helps in maintaining a healthy and harmonious living environment.
TASK 2
A) Reflection on the ways in which equality and diversity results in safe and enabling learning
atmosphere
Both equality and diversity aims in promoting and accepting various differences among
individuals from different background. In today's scenario, incorporating diversity and equality
in society is not an easy task. Every activity carried out by people is linked with their gender,
religion, caste and ethnicity etc. motive of equality is to provide equal opportunities to every
individual irrespective of their living standard. Diversity promotes rights which are available to
every individual. As a teacher of The King's School, it is my duty to incorporate characteristics
of equality and diversity within school which benefits in maintaining safe learning environment.
To promote these aspects it is very important to for me to treat all students and staff by fair
means (Banks, 2014). It is my duty to provide equal opportunities to all students so that they can
enhance their knowledge level and enjoy benefits which enables safe learning environment for
students. I should formulate rules and regulations which challenges discrimination and inequality
which helps students to coordinate with each other in a better way. Also, I need to avoid
stereotypes while giving some example or using some resources which will enhance their
knowledge level about different culture and religion. It is my responsibility to consider the needs
of students that belong to different and diverse groups. This will generate a sense of
Document Page
inclusiveness in the minds of student which helps them to learn and understand new concepts
and aspects everyday. This all aspects can provide a student safe and enabling learning
atmosphere in an appropriate way.
B) Five action or strategies that helps in achieving promoting equality and diversity in schools
UK is becoming more diverse by each passing day. Population of students in school is
shifting toward diversity and the teacher's population is mainly consists of white and female. It is
very important to promote diversity, equality and inclusiveness in schools so that children can
understand different people and their preselective in a better way (Banks, 2015). In case of The
King's School, I can implement five strategies can helps in promoting above mentioned aspects:
Self-awareness: Encouraging diversity and equity began with self-awareness. While
teaching there, I need to consider the impact on students which generates due to
intersection of different race, gender, living status and sexual orientation. I needs to listen
experiences actively which are faced by students from marginalised section. This will
help in maintaining all inclusive environment.
Class norms: Setting norms that supports openness and inclusion is also a good way to
promote diversity within school. I should teach students to respect each other's point of
view and preferences. Even if students of The King's School disagree on some aspects,
they must know the way to deny opinions respectfully.
Cultural relevant teaching: It is also known as responsive teaching in which I should
emphasize on cultural, social and political competence. In this, students of The King's
School are given deep knowledge regarding diverse cultures which helps them to
understand different people in a meaningful way (Castagno, 2014).
Purposeful planning: Having direct conversations regarding equity and diversity can
make children and teachers uncomfortable. I needs to introduce proper planning which
involves teaching sessions along with several example and resources that will make it
easy for students in understanding the purpose.
Community involvement: Parents and family members can be invited in class as
community experts. As they have wealth of knowledge regarding their culture, sharing
their stories with students can helps a lot. Also, to promote diversity and equality I can
invite people from diverse religions and race can be as guest speakers.

TASK 3
A) Ten point classroom rule document that define the need to encourage equality and diversity
To incorporate characteristics of equality and diversity in minds of students, it is
important to formulate some rules and policies which stresses on the need of equity and
diversity. As per my and my students opinion we have created ten classroom rules which
encourage diverseness, inclusiveness and equality. These are mentioned below:
Students must give respect to each other and use preferred names while calling other
classmates irrespective of their caste and socio-economic status.
Respecting classmates during debates, even if some points are not agreeable for some
students. This will helps them in understanding point of views from different perspectives
(Gilmore, 2012).
By not monopolizing the conversation and asking other students to give their contribution
which will result in all inclusive learning.
Listen carefully when some student is sharing their experience and feelings.
Avoid forming groups on the basis of religion, economic status and other aspects.
Bring out different perspective, ideas and solutions which will enhance the capability of
students to deal with unexpected situations.
Avoid making assumptions and ask students clearly if there is any misunderstanding
share with your teacher if something is bothering you. If teaching is not able to provide
help, approach department head.
Students need to be honest even if they have to stand against their friends and children
from same religion.
Try to listen more and speak less. This will help students in understanding perspective of
people form other culture in a better way (Kumra, Manfredi and Vickers, 2012).
B(I) Role of equality and diversity operator
As an equality and diversity coordinator of The King's School, the roles that are played
by me in encouraging the aspects related with equity and diverseness are very effective and clear
in approach. As a responsible coordinator it is my duty to insure equality is included as an
important agenda during meetings conducted by school management committees. At regular
time intervals, I need to encourage E&D initiatives and projects by involving individuals from all

departments. This will helps them in understanding and respecting diversity in a better way.
Also, I must act as a source of advice on aspects like equality impact assessment. This will
maintain an inclusive learning environment within the school and benefits the program that are
related with E&D. As an coordinator, I must act as a liaison point between E&D bodies and my
school by collecting school level equality information (Lawson, Boyask and Waite, 2013).
B(II) Identify three or more professionals and discuss how working with them incorporate E&D
agenda
Promoting E&D in schools is an essential aspect as it helps people of different
originalities, living standards, race and religion to live together in a harmonious way. It is not
possible for school authorities to carry out this task without getting any external help. This
external help is taken from agencies and organisations that helps in prevailing diversity and
equality. Some information about these agencies are mentioned below:
Equality and human right commission: It is a statutory body which was establish in
2006 under equality act. According to this act, no student or teacher can discriminate with
other individual on any grounds such as religion, gender, disability or sexual orientations
etc. This organisation protects the basic human rights that are given to every citizen of
UK. If some kind of discrimination and inequality takes place in schools, management
authorities and victim itself can take help from EHRC to get support against bad
behaviour.
Operation Black Vote: It is a non-profit national agency which is established to support
ethnic minority and black British population residing in UK. This organisation motivate
students from black and minority communities to take help from them if they feel some
kind of race inequality in their school or college. Because of this agency, school
authorities take care of such issues with sincerity and in an impartial way.
Gender information, research and education society: This agency formulates policies,
procedure and regulations to assure the welfare of transgender. If any student is facing
some issues because of sexuality, this agency will intervene to provide relief. If school
authority is not helping victim student, this agency will intervene and also charge some
legal case for negligence (Ozturk and Rumens, 2014). If school authority is not capable to
manage issue itself, they can take help from GIRES to maintain sexual equality at school.

TASK 4
A) Steps a school take to promote culture of equality and diversity in society and community
Along with promoting diversity and equality at school level, educators also incorporates
these needed aspects in society and communities. By educating the students about importance of
E&D, they contribute in making people tolerant to other caste, race, culture and preferences that
constitutes society and different communities (Willey, 2018). The King's School has
implemented several steps that promotes E&D in society. These are discussed beneath:
School authorities strictly follow Disability and equality act, 2010. this act prevent
individuals to discriminate on the basis of disability. Students in The King's School are
treated equally whether they are normal or have some kind of disability in them. Because
of this when these students meet anyone with disability, they treat them with kindness
and compassion. This results in harmonious environment within society because of no
discrimination.
Students of different culture and communities study together, due to this they get to know
more about diverse culture, religion and race. This knowledge makes them a responsible
citizen which is tolerant towards people of different origin and communities.
By organising different activities and competitions at school and inter-school level,
cultural difference among students and between students and teachers reduces. Because
of strong bond, they readily accept each other even if they are from different cultural and
socio-economic background (Peart, 2014).
By following all legal duties in an appropriate way, schools contribute in promoting good
relationship among masses of different races and religious communities. As students are
educated and familiar with these legal aspects they avoid discrimination with other
people. This promotes healthy and peaceful environment.
TASK 5
A) Five things a teacher can perform to value diversity and equality in classrooms and schools
UK is a multi-cultured society where people from different race and communities lives
together. Due to difference in opinion and preferences several issues are seen within society.
Effect of these issues can be seen at school levels also. As a teacher of The King's School, I have

performed some practices that encourages equality and values diversity in the minds of students.
These are mentioned below:
Express interest in background of students: To foster a trustful relationship among
students I encourage them to research and share experiences about their ethnic and
cultural background (Valls and Kyriakides, 2013). I analyze variations in tradition,
behavior and beliefs of students. These variations differentiates students on various
segments (Rattan and Ambady, 2013). These segments are living standard, gender and
race in most of the cases. Dealing with student of different backgrounds helps me to
understand their point of view more precisely. This helps me in creating a culturally
responsive classroom which helps in maintaining diversity and equality at school level.
Redirect role from instructor to facilitator: To maintain a nurturing atmosphere for
students I balance power differential between me and students. This allow students from
diverse backgrounds to share their problems and issues easily. If I will act like a strict
instructor with students, they will feel reluctant in sharing their issues and problems
because of the fear of getting punished. To avoid such problem I suggest them to bring
their reading materials and share their content with me and other fellow classmates which
results in sharing of ideas related with different cultures.
Maintain a strict level of sensitivity to language concerns: As most preferred language
in UK is English, students from minorities feels marginalized, pressured and lost as their
language is not given value. As a teacher, I celebrate diverseness of language and help
students in improving their English fluency. Also, I teach and order English speaking
children to respect other languages so that a decorum and dignity can be maintained in
the minds of children regarding other languages.
Maintaining an inclusive curriculum that remain respectful to differences: As a
teacher it is my responsibility to assure that all students are included under important
aspects of school. Also, I try to acknowledge the unique difference that my student
possess. I study diverse culture and backgrounds so that I can incorporate inclusiveness
within classrooms and school. This helps me in maintaining an curriculum which is
inclusive and respectful to differences.
Performing all legal duties appropriately: Legal duty involves all those laws which are
formulated by UK government to eliminate every kind of discrimination in the minds of
Document Page
people. As a teacher of The King's School it is my duty to follows this laws in a proper
way. I give special consideration to issues which originate due to caste and culture
differences. I teach students about importance of equality and diversity by giving them
many examples (Richardson and Monro, 2012). This makes students more comfortable in
communicating with each other even if they possess several differences in their way of
living.
B) Things that are missed while promoting E&D in school's culture
As a teacher I have various responsibilities, one of them is incorporating positive
characteristics of diverseness and equity in the minds of fellow teachers and students. But there
are some aspects which I missed while promoting E&D at school level. These aspects are
discussed below:
Hold a food fair: This can either be a full day event or some occasional occurrence. In
this students are asked to bring a dish for fellow classmates which is famous in their
respective culture, race or ethnicity. Students can share a bit regarding the history of dish.
Also, they can tell other students if that dish is made on some special function or event.
This idea will helps the students of The King's school to acknowledge the food culture of
different students. By this, they will become closer and a sense of equality will prevail in
their minds.
Host a culture day: This can be a good way for students to share their cultural and racial
identities with fellow classmates and schoolmates. Several activities can be included in
this event. These activities can be making posters, drawings, writing essays and poems
about their respective race, religion and culture. To promote this, I can encourage
students to ask questions so that they can understand cultural heritage of other students in
a better way (Soltani, et. al., 2012).
Hold events with motivational speakers from different backgrounds: As a
responsible teacher which teaches students from different backgrounds, it is my duty to
invite guests from several workplace to motivate students. This will help them in
understanding that no matter from which gender, race or sexual orientation they belong if
they will work hard achieving success will be easy. I can invite these speakers to help
students in understanding the importance of hard work.

C) Brief report on the impact of school's equality and diversity agenda
While maintaining a harmonious and appropriate environment within school, I have
introduced several practices. These practices will helps me in formulating safe and enabling
learning atmosphere for children. I have adopted strategies like class norms, purposeful planning
and self awareness to promote E&D in school. Also, after communicating with my class I have
prepared some rules that will encourage equality and equal opportunities for entire class. Along
with it, I have teach students about importance of diversity which helps them to create a
harmonious society (Tatli, et. al., 2012). As a teacher I have initiated programs like food fairs,
cultural days, events and seminars that stresses on inclusiveness of diversity and equality within
school and society. Also, I have tried to perform all legal duties in an appropriate way which will
results in promotion of E&D aspects.
CONCLUSION
From the above discussed report it has been analyzed that to create an inclusive learning
environment, it is very important for school authorities and management to promote aspects like
diversity and equality. This will helps in building strong relationship among people of different
background and ethnicity. Different programs that eliminates discrimination on the basis of
gender, race and culture helps the student to became tolerant towards each other even if they
differ on some points. Teachers play an important role in incorporating values like diversity and
equality within classrooms and schools.
