Domestic Abuse: A Critical Comparison of Nurses' Role in UK and India

This study compares the role of nurses in UK and India in solving domestic abuse issue. It also discusses the types of domestic abuse, statistics of domestic abuse in UK, nursing services and leadership to address domestic abuse, ways to stop domestic abuse in community and recommendations to promote nursing practices in the domestic abuse domain.

According to DOH, the definition of domestic abuse is as follow:
“Any incident of controlling, threatening behaviour or any kind of
abuse and violence which happened with that person who is having
16 year age or more then it, by his family members or partners
regardless of gender or sexuality”. The abuse can be psychological,
sexual, emotional, physical or financial (Domestic violence and
abuse ,2015).
Domestic violence is a kind of behaviour which includes violence
and other abuses by a person in the opposite of another in the
situation of relationship or in marriage (What is Domestic
Violence?., 2015).

Purpose: To gain and hold the control over a person by someone.
The following study has been conducted to know the domestic
violence and its impact of an individual one and society. This
particular area has been selected for study because it helps reader
to understand critical comparison between nurses role in UK and
India in terms of solving domestic violence issue. (O'hare, 2014).
Result of domestic violence: physical injury; psychological trauma
and many times, victim reaches at the stage of death.

Statistics of domestic abuse in UK:
 More than 2.1 million people every year suffer from
different kinds of domestic abuse in which 1.4 million are
females and 700,000 are males .Travis (2015).
 Every year, more than 100, 000 people are facing serious
injuries because of continuous domestic abuse.
 As per the statistics of 2013-14, the recorded domestic
abuse cases in England and Wales are around 887,000
(Top ten facts about domestic abuse in England and
(Wales 2015).

Compare nursing services of UK and India
 Main role of nurse is to provide health and care services to
service users in hospitals, nursing homes and health centres
(Department of Health,2013).
 As a health and social care worker, nurses have to deal with
patients of domestic abuse in day to day life (NICE guidelines
[PH50], 2014).

 But in case of United Kingdom, responsibilities of protocol
management, conflict resolution and collaboration with research
team are the roles of nurses (Press and media, (2014).
 In India, mostly nurses are appointed for physical care of
patients in the hospitals and only physical care is preferred by
them instead of mental care.
 But in UK, both the care is preferred equally by nurses at the
time of choosing occupation .Cole, (2015).

 In United Kingdom, this profession has been considered as the
most valuable occupation for women to build their career and
getting better opportunity. (Cole, 2015).
 But in India, nurses are not responsible for providing guidance in
such cases and there are very less opportunities in this field for
women .(O'hare, 2014).
 When talking about training practices in UK, four types of
training such as adult training, children training, learning
disability and mental health training are given to nurses to deal
effectively with different individuals.
 But in India, only general training related to health and care
services is provided to nurses (Travis, 2015).

 In United Kingdom, Nursing and Midwifery Council is
responsible for ensuring practices of nurses and are also
responsible for enhancing their development (O'hare, 2014).
 In accordance to these registrations, there are overall 4, 00,000
nurses working in the United Kingdom (Worley, 2015).
 In case of India, professional bodies are not so active for
enhancing development of nurses as compare to UK and there
are no data available related to number of nurses working here

 The name of this program is Mobilise which is running by
Indian Government and this health application is used for
public health (Nurse Leadership, 2015).
 On the other hand, in UK, a NightOwl application has
developed in against of domestic abuse for women.
 In accordance to above description, it has been concluded
that nurses of UK are more responsible than Indian nurses
in performing their duties and roles (Cole, 2015).

Ways to stop domestic abuse in
community
 Determine the signs of abuse
 Getting the community educated (O'hare,
2014)
 Develop the technology for stop domestic
abuse
 Developing the nursing services in the area of
domestic abuse (Travis, 2015)

CONCLUSION
UK and Indian government have started to take some
important steps in direction of stopping of domestic abuse
cases in the community by developing nursing leadership.
With the help of training and providing some authorities for
taking decisions, the nursing services can be developed in the
area of domestic abuse.

 Promoting nursing practices in the domestic abuse
domain.
 Increase the use of technology for knowing the signs
of domestic abuse (NICE guidelines [PH50], 2014).
 Developing the mobile applications for the
community to inform about domestic abuse situations
to others (Worley, 2015).
