Reflective Post 1 – On the Phobia associated with Essay Writing
Writing essays is something that people are known to love to do a lot, but when it comes
to me however, essays are something that always terrify me. I am scared of words, and of
weaving words and if someone asks me to put pen to paper and state my thoughts, then I would
not know how to do so. Hence I have a phobia when it comes to writing in general. I have always
had this phobia since my childhood. I was never a good student in school and when it came to
activities such as essay writing, I would often have to take help from my friends and peers. I
would need their help and support in order to be able to write well. I could never do so on my
own. One of the main reasons why I am not so proficient in essay writing and in essay writing in
English at that, is the fact that I come from a family background where people do not
communicate in English much. Hence I never really got the opportunity to develop a vocabulary
in English in my growing up years. It is important to remember for any and every person looking
to improve essay writing skills, including for myself, that in order to be able to write well, one
has to first read a lot. Since my writing skills are not good and since there is a genuine fear that I
experience when it comes to something such as writing an essay in English, I feel that one of the
ways by which I can overcome this fear is my reading books in English. I believe the more I
read, the more vocabulary I will learn, and the more vocabulary I learn, the better I will be able
to write. Reading is the key to good writing in my opinion, which is why one of the immediate
steps that I am going to take in order to improve my essay writing skills is to start reading
voraciously. Once I master the art and the skill of reading, I am confident that I will be able to
gain the language and the writing skills that are needed to ultimately produce an essay, that, upon
reading it, is regarded to be a good piece of work.
