Introduction
Woolworths and Aldi are the largest company in Australia. Woolworths is an
Australian company which is engaged in retailing and the second largest company in
Australia on the basis of revenue and founded in 1924 in Sydney. It has many products such
as food, liquor, petrol, general merchandise, home improvement and hotels (About US,
2019). These include Australia food segment and New Zealand food segment. Woolworth’s
employees are more than 2015000 and more than 3000 stores in Australia and New Zealand.
Its competitors are The Best Things, Avenue and ASMC Industrial. They work directly with
the Australian cultivators and the farmers, so that they can supply best products to their
customers (Keith, 2012). Aldi is also another largest company which operates grocery stores
worldwide and it was founded in 1975. The company offers home goods, meats, wines and
other items. They have relations with local farmers and various varieties of growers, so it
helps the company to provide fresh products to the customers (About US, 2019).
Both companies are using CSR activities which help in achieving the sustainable
development goals of United Nation. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the
responsibility of the corporation within the society to contribute towards social, economic,
political and environmental. It helps the organization in increasing their profits and
improving efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. Sustainable development goals
which were set by the United Nations’ in 2015 for prosperity and peace for individuals as
well as the planet in present and future too. There are 17 sustainable goals and its aims are to
eliminate poverty, improve health, enhance education, reduce inequality and contribute to the
economic growth of the country. Goals are no poverty, zero hunger, good health, quality
education, gender equality, clean water and energy, economic growth, industry, innovation
and infrastructure; remove inequalities, climate action and partnerships (Sustainable
Development Goals, 2019). The report consists of role of CSR activities which are adopted
by Woolworths and Aldi in achieving the goals of sustainable development.
Role of CSR in achieving the sustainable development goals of United Nations
Corporate social responsibilities play an important role in achieving the goals related
to sustainable development of the United Nations because sustainable development goals
focus on the meeting needs; ethical values, various dimensions related to social,
environmental and economic and it also focus on human right whereas corporate social

responsibility focus on ethical behaviour and stakeholder approach, so there is inter
relationship between corporate social responsibilities and sustainable development goals. By
taking responsibility of voluntary initiative, company can maintain effective environment and
it also impact on the human health because it helps in promoting. Through corporate social
responsibilities, companies focus on ethical behaviour within their organization such as they
manage their products and services in an ethical way, which helps the organization in more
efficient process of production, effective environment, health and safety by cleaner
technologies of production, minimizing waste and increasing the use of recycling, so this will
help the organization in maintaining effective work culture or environment in their
organization. Company has maintaining effective relationship with government and other
international organization, so it also helps in achieiving the goals of sustainable development
of the country (Behringer & Szegedi, 2016). Woolworths and Aldi also play an important role
in achieving the goals related to sustainable development by their corporate social
responsibility activities.
At Woolworths, CSR or sustainability is all about doing right thing. They believe that
success does not only require profit and growth but it also required to minimise
environmental impact. They contribute to SDGs by their CSR such as Woolworth’s people,
planet, prosperity, customers and partners (Luiz, Bowen, & Beswick, 2011).
CSR of Woolworths
At Woolworths there is safe environment for all the workforce and these is equal rules
and regulation for all the employees. They believe to create value of the organization
by encouraging diversity.
Company aim is to maintain minimum 40 per cent of manager has to be women and
ensure equal pay for both male and female for equal work. They are also focus on the
health and safety of their workforce (Santos, Svensson, & Padin, 2013).
Company provide various training and development programs to their employees for
the development of their skills and knowledge.
Woolworths also support to the educational resource, so it helps in contributing to the
objectives of national development.
They build connections with the communities or government through trust and also
promoting healthy eating and food security in various schools.
