Abstract
This research paper is based on the critical analyses on “Environmental Sustainable
development” and “Precautionary Principle” incorporated in “Environmental Legislation and
Policies”. In addition, this research helps in understanding how the legislation and policies
are operated with the help of the Environmental Sustainable development” and
“Precautionary Principle” as these are the fundamental part of the legislation and policies of
the environment. In addition, to understand this concept an example of a contemporary
environmental issue that is “Pollution” is illustrated in this paper. This issue has been taken
into consideration, which helps in analysing the concept. Moreover, this paper suggests the
pros and cons of the arguments along with the explanation of environmental laws and
principles recommended for the contemporary environmental issue.

1.0 Introduction
This essay helps in understanding the role of sustainable development and
“Precautionary principle” in the “Environment legislation and policies” that defines natural
surroundings, which help in enhancing and providing growth to the living creatures. The
natural environment has a greater role in the life existence on the earth as it affects human
beings and the other creature’s life to develop and grow naturally (Buckley, 2012). Therefore,
it is important to consider the “Environmental legislation and policies” which are related to
the “Environmental Sustainable Development” and “Precautionary Principle”. The following
paragraphs help in understanding these concepts in details.
The ‘Sustainable Development’ is referred to the development, which helps in
meeting with the present needs without comprising in the future generation abilities in
meeting up their own needs. In addition, the sustainable development is done with the
responsibility of the environmental interaction to reduce or avoid the natural resources
degradation or depletion and allows the sustainable development in the quality of the
environment for the longer duration is known as “Environmentally Sustainable
Development” (Moffatt, 2009). To maintain this development, the government have enacted
the Environmental legislation and policies. In addition, the following paragraph helps in
understanding the concept and role of “Environmental Legislation and policies” in
“Environmentally Sustainable Development”.
The “Environmental Legislation” is the combination of laws and regulations
established with the aim of giving protection to the environment from harmful activities. In
addition, it is done with the help of enactment of various environmental acts such as the
National Environmental Act (Overton , 2010). On the other hand, the “Environmental
