Introduction
Events refers to the planned public and social occasions which are
established with a view to generate particular benefits. The events which occur for a
limited time and have a global reach and considerable investment are called global
events. These events have a significant impact upon the environment and population
of the involved countries.
ExCel London is an event management company which have hosted various
public events, conferences, wedding, concerts and consumer and trade events. The
company owns 6 hotels, 30restraunts and bars and also 3700 parking spaces on
their work premises.
The report will discuss the diversity of global events which included its
structure and impact on society. Various factors which have influenced the
development of global and local events and strategies to support event development
will be discussed. The report will also produce an evaluation which represents
values, impact and legacy of events on environments.

Structure and organization of events industry:
Event management companies:
Events are hosted by various organizations which can be specific bodies’ and. all the
other events are run by special teams within the large organizations. Corporate
events are organized by the in house event teams within the companies. Event
management companies are a tool for strategic communication and marketing
whose potential clients are companies of various sizes (Backman, 2018). Companies
use these events to benefit from promotional events though which they communicate
with their potential and existing customers. These companies can also help the
clients in setting up the meeting with businesses and partners on different levels.
Event industry suppliers
Event suppliers are the companies who have professional individuals
and groups which organize events on a contract basis for their clients. These
suppliers provide a wide range of specialist suppliers in the following areas:

 Staging for event
 Sound production
 Lighting
 Audio-visual production
 Entertainment and catering (Jones, 2017)
These suppliers also work to associated services of events to the clients such as
legal services, accounting services, transport and communication services. These
suppliers are an important part of the events industry as they provide their
specialized and expertise assistance for the production of high profile events.
Event Industry associations
Industry associations are the companies which have professional associations
who provide communications, liaisons, networking, lobbying and ethical codes of
practices on the behalf of clients. These companies represents a range of sectors
within the industry. These companies are specific to a region and some of them are
affiliated groups in countries. They can include the following:

 Corporate hospitality

Venue management are the event management services to service clients.
These venues include historic houses, museums, theatres, universities and galleries
which create additional revenues though hiring their facilities for various corporate
events and functions (Park and Park, 2017).

The public events are the community events or they are major events which
take places in communities which have higher interest and attitude towards those
events. Therefore, the society or community becomes a major stakeholder in the
events (Vlahakis, Apostolou and Kopanaki, 2018). They are an important part of the
event so the event managers have to plan their events and consider their
prospective in all the processes. In the views of different types of society events can
be following:
Community events: These events are the events which are a part of every human
society and can be identified in every age. These events provides the societies an
opportunities such as societies and local clubs for raining funds and recruit new
members. They are considered essential for survival. These events can also provide
healthy debates and disagreements for identities and priorities. These events help
the societies to create and strengthen their sense of communities and enhancing
belongingness. Such events are also supported by government and other agencies
who are concerned with supporting and maintaining healthy communities.
Major events and society: Major events cause changes in the community
perspectives and in general societal perspective. In these events, some members of
the community enjoy the events as spectators and participants (Draper, Young
Thomas and Fenich, 2018). If the event is small then the event is managed by the
members only. When the event becomes larger, the planning and other processes
are taken care by the professionals instead of host community.
These events provide wider impacts upon the community as it involves a
sense of pride in the members of community and creates economic and job creation
benefits. The physical implications of these events can be crowd congestion and
traffic restrictions. Relationship of community and events is indirect. The media is
main source of information.

In the last 2-3 decades, event industry have received a significant growth.
The event industry have a long history of development and growth. Following are
some factors which have influenced the development of event industry on a local
and global level:
Pride and honour:
Events on a global and local level represents their communities. This way the
events results into community and national pride (Chamberlain and et.al., 2019).
People feel connected to their teams participating with others in Major events. This
creates a sense of belongingness in the world. The communities of winning teams
feel honoured when they represent their society on wider platform. This gave birth to
the healthy competition between the countries on local and global levels. This is one
of the major factor which lead to the development of event industry.
Examples can include the communities and countries who get to participate in the
events for the first time and represent their country on a global platform.
Legacy:
Some events leave their legacy on a national level. That legacy involve
greater awareness and participation in these events such as sports and cultural
activities. These events widens community’s cultures and horizons which expose
them towards challenging new customs and ideas as a whole (Parent and
Chappelet, 2017).
For example: Common wealth games started a long time ago and still continue till
today. The winning teams creates legacy for the upcoming athletes and participants.
Social benefits:
Major events illustrate social inclusion while hosting and participating in these
events. The events are targeted at certain groups which are provided various
benefits such as free access to coaching clinics, selection and warm up sessions.
The events create opportunities for employment and development of society. These
factors influenced the development of events as the countries views events as an

opportunity to create those advantages (Maguire and McLoughlin, 2019). Some
social advantages which were realized are explained as following:
 Mobilization and involvement of countries.
 High level of community integrations.
 High involvement of a numerous volunteers.
 Creation of educational opportunities.
 Cross section participation from different communities.
 Opportunities for personal development.

Emotional importance:
The events represents some kind of symbolic importance to the host countries
and the participating countries. Media coverage of these events provokes emotions
which range from sadness to pride and jubilation to the apprehension. Events
provides the opportunity to the athletes to prove their endurance to their friends and
relatives (Stadler, 2021).
Some common examples are common wealth games and Olympics games. Another
example is marathon.

Events are considered important because they have the ability to challenge
the imagination and have the power to explore possibilities. When events are hosted
upon global levels, media is constantly covering the country and major activities. The
media coverage have helped in drawing the attention of other countries towards their
issues and problems.
For example: In 2005, G8 Summit at Gleneagles, drew the attention if public towards
the condition of Africa due to poverty and debts. The issue grabbed the attention of
media on an international level and drew the attention of leaders powerfully.
Showcasing expertise:

The global expansion of events industry have provided the opportunity to the
counties to showcase their expertise and abilities through providing strong platforms
for hosting the events. It also help the companies to promote its new business
opportunities. The media coverage at that demonstrate the host country as well of
participating country’s innovations, achievements and capacity.
Major cultural impacts:
Events also have major impacts upon the diverse cultures of societies. These
events provides the communities an opportunity to learn and adopt the elements of
other cultures into their own cultures. This promoted cultural diversity and
acceptance of people regardless of their distinct backgrounds, origins and cultures.

levels which touch every aspect of their lives including social, cultural and
environmental aspect.
Value and legacy of events:
An event leaves a long term positive impact upon the host country
economically, physically and culturally such as development of infrastructure. Legacy
is something which is left after the celebration of an event in the host country or host
city. Legacy is a plan in event management which is initiated with the first stage of
organization with an objective of generating influence and impact in the host
destination (Kelly and Fairley 2018).
Events allow the audience an intimate and engaging experience which
leaves along lasting impression on them. An event is more memorable than a
traditional form of advertising. It makes events and event industry highly

valuable for the countries. The event industry is extremely valuable in the
terms of development of destinations and cities because they contribute much
more than just the celebrations and enjoyments. Events such as Olympics
and Common Wealth games have the greatest impacts which lead major
improvements in transport, infrastructure and other services. Other events
which do not attract much media attraction but leave a legacy in the host
destination such as promotion and improvements in sports, culture, quality
and standards of life and research etc.
Events are one of the best ways to establish personal relationships
with target audience, potential sponsors and potential partners as well.

An event have both the negative and positive impacts on the involved
countries. The positive and negative impacts of events can be analysed as
per the analysis of different events (Mysyk, 2020). The impact can be
analysed as following:

Eco-procurement: This concept should be used as a strategy in the development of
events as it involves development of supply chain which delivers goods in a way that
minimizes the impact on environment. This strategy has been followed as is clearly
evident within the food sector supply chain, fair trade and other ethical supply chain
standards (Rodriguez-Aguilar and Marmolejo-Saucedo, 2019).
 Green event management: Communication and awareness are the concepts
of creating a green culture. Green culture involves a reinforcing behaviours
which people want to adopt, but appropriate tools and methods are needed to
be implemented. Commitment to social responsibility has been published
formally which is now considered compulsory for the corporate institutional
communications.
Commercial events:
Strategies for supporting responsible event development for commercial events
are as following:
 Energy efficiency: During the event, event managers or organisers need to
make sure that they use energy efficient products in the event. They can
request energy meters readings to monitor the electricity consumption.
 Waste minimization: The event managers can use eco-friendly or recycled
papers for instead of printed hand-outs. USB flash drive can be used to save
important documents and to reduce paper usage. Recycle bins must be
provided on the venue so that waste separation can be encourages to reduce
landfill (Antchak, Ziakas and Getz, 2019).
 Water consumption: In the events wastage of water is a common issue. The
event organizers can implement various water conservation practices through
their actions and policies for creating awareness.
 Eco procurement: the event must be organized at the venues which
implement environmental practices such as waste reduction and energy
efficiency. The products to be used in events must be recyclable, locally
manufactured and eco-friendly.

Recommended strategies for the future:
In the future, threshold industry standards will be driving life cycle analysis
reporting through which value chain and other initiatives such as global reporting
initiatives will be seen as the entry level management standards for a range of
events. One of the best strategy for responsible development of events can be use
of electronic media instead of print media. It will reduce wastages and will be more
eco-friendly than the printed media techniques.

and Expenditure incurred by event organization. Expenditure incurred by the
sponsors and event organisers to host the event has flow on effects. The money
spend by tourists on food and beverages is direct expense while for the suppliers it is
indirect expenditure. Multiplier ratio is the aggregate impact of expenditure on the
economy (Backman, 2018). It implies that event expenditure ripples through the
economy. It vary through the particular mix of the industries involved in the
geographic location.
Impact on government:
Communities and governments host events for various benefits such as
cultural, social and sporting values. The changes were introduced in the events
when the people started perceiving the events as an ability to deliver economic
benefits through the promotion of tourism, job creation and increased visitor
expenditures. Events create long term benefits such as promotion of host destination
which results in enhanced tourism. Governments pays a significant amount of
