Globalization Effects
Globalization refers to the nationalistic and local perspectives opening to an outlook that
is broad for interdependence and interconnection in the world with free transfer of goods, capital
and services across the frontiers of nations. In basic terms, it is the practice of turning a system
into a network that is international (Altbach, 2015). Globalization has different kinds in terms of
how they create an impact on the current world. Economic globalization is one of the
globalization types which have played a huge role in the development of the world today. The
results of economic globalization are all over our world today and have created a united
economy around the globe. In as much as there is an existence of giant economies playing a huge
role in the development of the economies of the world today, economic globalization has had a
bigger impact. Many factors have contributed to the thriving of globalization and one of them is
a huge technological advancement in the sectors of communication, money transfer and
transportation (Crane, Kawashima & Kawasaki, 2016). For a person to conduct a trade
transaction through an online shop, the internet provides the communication capability for
communication on a website platform. Money transfer technologies too, like the use of PayPal
and other online money transfer platforms have made it easy to send payments. The fast means
of transportation like the use of planes also makes it possible to ferry goods, whether light or
bulky to the customers.
Another type of globalization that has taken shape in our society today is cultural
globalization. Cultural globalization refers to the transmission of cultures and ideas all over the
world. Through the enablement of a massively fast transport and communication networks,
people have been able to travel to other countries in a convenient, easy and cheaper way. That
has consequently led to an increase in interactions between people of different cultures and

societies (Cvetkovich, 2018). In that case, people have intermingled and intermarried, sharing
their unique cultures in foreign countries (Boyden, 2015). That has then opened the chance that
allows the creation of a new world.
Political Globalization is another type of globalization. Through political globalization, countries
around the world have been able to abolish retrogressive systems of governance and accepting
the progressive ones (Sklair, 2016). For example, many countries in their developmental stages
were able to borrow the systems of politics that had been proven to work and as mature, in their
application in the developed countries. Governance systems like democracy are now being used
in the majority of the countries in the world.
Features of Globalization
i) World Markets
One of the present-day characteristics of globalization is the accessibility of world
markets. Globalization has opened a massive scope of markets around the globe. In the past,
businesses, goods, and services were only limited to the people and environment around the
businesses. The consumers of various products and services produced were a constraint to a
certain location because of many barriers such as communication and transportation. However,
globalization has opened a limitless network of opportunities for businesses because they can
finally access markets overseas (Atkin, Faber & Gonzalez-Navarro, 2018). There are many ways
businesses can access international markets. One of them is by opening up physical branches.
Through these branches, either the products or services will be produced in the branches and sold
to the host market or finished goods or services could be transported to the respective branches in
different countries (Rodrik, 2018). Another way through which international and regional
markets have been opened to businesses through globalization is through the use of technology,

particularly online shops. There are lots of online platforms that open up the markets for
businesses and they include; social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp and websites.
ii) Global Products standardization
After the opening up of global markets through globalization, there was a need for
standardization of goods, laws, services, and businesses for effective and efficient transactions.
For a person to reach the global market, he/she needs to satisfy the global market’s standards.
Since there are lots of businesses offering products and services, there is also a rise in completion
(Baars et al., 2016). Therefore, the low quality of products and services will be automatically
eliminated from the market. The customers are to act as judges for the products and they set the
standards by buying the best goods and services, automatically eliminating the rest.
iii) Sharing of Ideas
Through an international system build on a seamless transfer of ideas and information, it
has opened up the best opportunity of sharing ideas. An example of that is the fact that a tweet
can go viral despite its origin. The technological advancement through platforms like social
media has boosted the ability to share ideas in a great way (Smith, 2018). Another great example
of idea sharing is the fact that institutions, colleges, and universities offer courses on an online
platform. Many people across the world can teach themselves essential skills like programming
through YouTube and other credible websites like datacamp.com.
iv) Raising standards
Globalization has not only led to an increase in the standards and quality of goods but
also the quality of life. Many countries and people from different counties have transformed and
improved their living standards. The citizens from a country can learn through online platforms,
how people from other countries live and operate. For example, people from one country can see

and learn how people from other countries behave and live. Through that, they would demand an
increase in the living standards in their own countries.
v) Freedom standards
One of the most unfortunate situations is the fact that repressive leaders make the people
they lead to believe that their situations are predetermined and that change agitation should not
be sought. In a closed system, the subjects of leadership will not know what they deserve.
However, through globalization, they get to learn more about freedom and openness in ideas
(Crane & Matten, 2016). They will then demand change in the manner in which they are
governed. In the process, the standard of freedom for citizens will continue to rise in uniformity
in the global levels. Globalization, therefore, plays a big role in raising the standards of freedom.
Implications of Globalization
Economic implication
Globalization has led to an increase in performance in the world economy. Most
countries that have greatly benefited from globalization are the developed and the developing
ones. That is because they depend majorly on export goods and services to increase their
revenues. The level of skilled labor among the countries has also increased because of an
improved education system borrowed from other countries and the transfer of skilled workforce
from one country to another (Donner, 2016). Therefore, globalization has boosted the economy
of the world collectively and individually.
Social Implication
Because of globalization, there has been a great level of borrowing and dilution of
cultures (Steger, 2017). People who once held strong and liberal ideologies are starting to
become liberal and accommodative to other cultures foreign to them. Because of globalization,

the world has become socialized to the extent that there are some cultures that are uniform. For
example, the number of people who speak the English language has increased as opposed to the
ages where globalization had not taken root. Mostly, people meet and interact on social media
platforms like YouTube and FaceBook.
Political implication
Globalization has also created a great impact in the political cultures of the countries in
the world. For example, countries in Africa before colonialism had a system of rule that was
based on dictatorship and hereditary form of leadership. However, globalization enabled the
colonies to introduce political structures that were well functioning and that are still used to date.
Globalization enables countries to continuously transform the way leaders govern and the
manner of conducting politics (Eriksen, 2018). Leaders hold frequent conventions and ideas are
shared and implemented through constitutional amendments. In that case, globalization has
served the role of streamlining the political cultures and landscapes of countries around the
globe.
Cultural Implication
It is interesting how the hip hop culture, for example, is taking root in many countries.
Through globalization, the cultures of the world have been mixed and transformed to create new
ones. Globalization has rendered cultures dynamic in the sense that people have become liberal
and free from retrogressive and static cultures (Gill, 2016). Many people are willing to borrow
culture and transform or even abandon their cultures, depending on how their cultures resonate
with them. The evidence of a changing culture can be demonstrated in the manner in which the
demand of cultural products like music, movies, and clothing is increasing at a fast rate around
the globe whose markets are foreign to the cultural products.

Changes in the nature of Workforce and Work in New Zealand Post
Aging
The organization I work for, is known as New Zealand Post. It faces a kind of a crisis
transforming the aging workforce to adapt and adopt the technological trends in the workplace.
Since the analog generation is quickly passing away, the management faces a dilemma of how to
handle the aging generation because they have a slow and low technology acceptance rate.
Undertaking massive retrenchment would go against the labor laws and rights of employees.
However, the employees that belong to generation X are putting minute input and impact in the
organization. In that case, the management has decided to undertake a culture of recruiting tech-
savvy individuals. As the retirement ages catch up with the older generation, they are being
replaced by vibrant and tech-savvy young people (Hitt, Ireland & Hoskisson, 2016). Another
move that the organization has decided to take is to train its employees on the basis of the current
technologies regardless of the departments they serve. That way, older employees have been able
to catch up with technological trends.
Diversity
The impact of globalization has also been evidenced by the level of diversity in my
organization. Most employees represent different countries and cultures. For example, my
department has employees that represent four different continents and countries. Through the
organization’s recruitment process, most of the jobs are advertised online for all the interesting
candidates regardless of the country or culture they represent can apply. The organization is
multinational and for purposes of creating a multinational image, it has embraced employees
from different diversities and cultures. Having worked in the organization for quite some time, I
discovered that the major customers and clients working there are from different countries.

Globalization has had an impact that is manifest not only in the composition of the
organization’s employees but also in the client and customers’ composition. My organization
offers equal chances to employees from different backgrounds and countries for purposes of
creating a global taste in the products and services it offers. For example, through the design
processes of different quality brands, employees from every continent are asked to create a
design reflecting on their continents. Thereafter, the different designs are put together and a
unified design is created with a representation of the different continental cultures. That has
given the organization an edge in selling its products worldwide.
Service and Knowledge Work
There is also a good representation of globalization in the service and knowledge work in
the workplace. Since the organization that I work with is international, there has been a need to
cater for clients coming from different countries, cultures, and continents. To better serve the
clients from different origins, representatives from the different cultures have been hired to offer
services that are tailor-made for the different cultures represented by the clients. For example, in
the department of customer service, customers around the globe and from different countries
make calls for inquiries and other needs. The organization has been creative enough to place
customer service employees from different countries and origins at the end of the phone.
Therefore, when a caller confirms his/her location, the call is transferred to a customer service
attendant who serves the caller. Apart from the customer service department, globalization has
also been utilized in the legal department. Since the organization serves different countries with
different rules and regulations, it has invested its legal structures in a manner that captures the
laws of different regions. The individual organizational lawyers offer legal advice to the
management on the various legal requirements of different countries.
