AI Summary
Globalization has had a significant impact on the economic and social aspects of the UK, changing the perception of its citizens in a negative direction. The adoption of different cultures by Britishers, particularly among young people, is seen as ridiculous because each citizen has a responsibility to respect their own culture. This confusion leads to ambiguity in the relationship between globalization and identity formation, resulting in both positive and negative consequences for acquiring a sense of place and social identity.

Identity in the context of the globalized city
Globalization may be defined as a process of integration and interaction among the
people, government and companies who belongs from different nations. It arises when different
nations interchange their views, ideas, cultures, products or services. Advancement which arouse
in recent years in transportation such as jet engine, container ship as well as in
telecommunications in terms of internet and mobile phones are the results of globalization. Thus,
in the recent time world's economies and culture grew more rapidly due to the globalization
(Hirst, Thompson and Bromley, 2015). In the present scenario, there is high level of tendency to
trade and transact the goods or services around the globe. Due to this, connectivity between the
different markets is also increasing more quickly.
Usually there are mainly four aspects of globalization which have high level of influence
upon the world's economy. It includes trade and transactions, capital and investment movements,
migration and movement of people as well as dissemination of information. On the basis of all
these aspects globalization closely affect activities and functions of business organization. In
addition to this, globalization also has high level of influence upon the economics, sociology
cultural resources and the natural environment (Pieterse, 2015). Thus, globalization had not only
increased international trade or investment but also it increased the exchange of different
cultures. In UK, globalization having high level of influence upon social, economic and cultural
changes. Migration of people is the most important aspect due to which social changes place in
British environment. In the present era, globalization has high level of impact upon the young
people (Hay and Marsh, 2016). Moreover, people of different nations are connected with each
other through internet as well as by the means of social networking sites.
In addition to this, young people also experience globalization on a daily basis by
approaching or getting employment opportunities from different countries. Besides this,
globalization also has influence upon the life styles of people because different person carries
different pattern to live life. People who live in UK societies have differences in race, religion,
culture and identities as compared to other nations (Ritzer and Dean, 2015). Thus, globalization
imposes challenges in front of British people because people who live in different countries have

varied identity and life style. Before analyzing the impact of place and identity of migrated
people upon Britishers one needs to understand the meaning of globalized city as well as place
and identity. Globalized city refers to the city or country that is interconnected with the other
cities by the means of trade or transaction as well as migration of people. Global cities make
business transactions around the globe so they have the power to control a disproportionate
amount of globe trader. Along with it, there are several educational issues which are faced by the
people who move to the global city for their learning. Identity is the most significant issue which
have high level of impact upon the persons who live in global city for their educational purpose.
On the basis of this aspect such global city has also direct and tangible effect on global
economy or affairs. Different people who live at different places possess their distinct identity.
Sociological theory states the aspects from which social world is related to each other. Each
person whether belongs to globalized city prefers to carry out their social identity in terms of
standard of living, race, religion, color, culture, language and standard of living (Caraccioli and
Wright, 2015). For instance: One Britisher prefers to wear the clothes which are designed by
American designers. Nevertheless, it does not mean that he do not support fashion style of
London. On the basis of this aspect it is not necessary for British person to like or wear the
clothes which are designed by British companies just because her lives in UK (Casakin,
Hernández and Ruiz, 2015). Thus, each person has distinct identity and having the right to make
their own decisions.
Along with it, person who lives in different countries also having an identity on the basis
of color. Usually, Britishers are white whereas Africans are black. It is also the main aspect upon
which individual creates distinct identity of the person who lives around the globe. All these
aspects have high level impact upon the global affairs or local communities (Schulte, 2016).
Thus, color and complexion of people who live in different nations are the main factor due to
which some people feel isolation whereas others might be connected or associated with each
other. In the world of ''global is now local'' there are mainly three types of themes which have
influence upon globalized city. It consists of super diversity, multiple identities and transfer
nationalism. Super diversity refers to migrants who are coming to UK from the different parts of
the world irrespective that whether they have any historical link with UK or not. Besides this,
multiples identities include people of different class, race, gender and generations (Li and Tse,

2015). Along with it, trans-nationalism is a collection of multiple identities which may be the
result of globalization and easy communications.
With the growth of globalization and urban multiculture cultural diversity is increased
with the very high pace. Young people who live in globalized city face many challenges in
coping up with the migrated people. Globalization has inculcated high level of differentiation
within the world and thereby make the world more unstable. Globalized city refers to the mix of
different identities in which there is no high level of homogeneity take place (Lees, 2015). In this
situation, young people are facing problem to build their social identity in the city that widely
differs in terms of education, culture, labor market etc. Changes in the consumer culture are one
of the main impacts which globalization had placed upon the customers of UK. In UK, 75%
children having access to internet where as 80% customers maker use of mobile phone. Both
these source provide assistance to the customer to connect with the people and companies who
trade at global level (Bull, 2015). On the basis of this aspect there is huge choices are available to
young people. Now there is the high tendency that people prefer to make use of product or
services of different brands.
In the present scenario, young people have desire to raise their standard of living and
thereby build their distinct identity. Thus, young people cannot control the impact of social
change on their lives due to globalization. Today, young people are highly influenced by
technological and culture changes which take place at global level. Globalization takes out the
different parts of the world more closely. In the globalized world people are highly connected
with each through internet and social networking sites (Miller and Skinner, 2015). Through such
communication means people share their feelings and there by aware from the changes which
take place in the global world. For instance: The person who live in UK has desire to purchase
the mobile phone which are introduced by American companies also have an impact upon the
economy of UK. This aspect adversely affects the companies who are operated in the
communication industry of UK (Young people, identity and living in a global society, 2016).
Along with it, globalization also affects the place and identity of young people. In the
globalized world, it is very difficult or complex for an organization to re think and revises their
identity and place in the globalized city. In the world of globalization life style of young people
is highly influenced by social, cultural and technological changes. Besides this, the identity of
the people is not only affected by cultural changes but also it is affected by the place of work,

peers and their pattern of consumption (Migdal, 2015). Usually, decision making aspect of the
customer is closely influenced by their peers, supervisors, friends and family members. For
instance: David who lives in UK take suggestion from his social media friends in relation to the
famous while he make shopping of dress (Hall, 2012). Thus, identities of another people who
live in the other part of the world have high level of impact upon the decision making of others.
In the present time, people who reside at different parts of the world share their ideas,
view and suggestion with each other through the means of social networking sites and internet.
Now, young people are not readily to accept the culture of others. They prefer to create their
distinct image or identity and there by represent the difference in front of peers and supervisors.
Due to globalization, it is very easy for the persons to live in UK who belongs from the different
part of world (Shapiro, 2015). Nevertheless, many of whom having the confusion in relation to
their identity on the basis race, religion, lifestyle or color. For instance: A person who lives in
London having black color like Africans whereas the color of Britishers is usually white. Her
parents were Caribbean where as she looks like African due to her color. That girl know that she
is Christian but has many confusion in relation to her identity just because of her color is black.
Before globalization, white persons or Britishers have faith on their real identity.
Nevertheless, after the globalization white persons had started to carry out negative
perception in relation to their own identity. For instance: In the globalized city there is type of
people who came from different cities in UK for the educational purpose. During the
introductions class in which students who came from different nations share their identity. In this
class there also some Britishers had carried out negative perception in relation to their own
identity. They though that we are plain British so they think to create their distinct identity in
UK. With the desire to create distinct identity there are several while boys of UK have changed
their identity by adopting the black culture by taking into consideration the past and
unemployment aspect.
Due to the high pace of changing environment Britishers prefers to reproduce their own
identity on the basis of the surroundings in which they live. They think that in the globalized
world black people get high employment opportunities as compared to white people. It is one of
the main cause due to which Britishers want to change their identity. In the globalized city,
identity of the person is highly influenced by their peer groups and communities (Hirst,

Thompson and Bromley, 2015). On the basis of this aspect it can be stated that UK is the
multicultural society which have closely affects the identity and other aspects of young people.
Along with it, globalization also affects the way in which people see themselves. In the
more changing environment there are several issues are faced by young people in the context of
their identity and citizenship. Young people see the citizenship as a feeling and status whereas it
really means the association or link between the status and identity of the individual with the
lives of others. Citizenship refers to the follow up all the rules or regulations of the concerned
country with whom they want to share sense of community. In previous years, young people did
not have any idea in relation to the global citizenship (Pieterse, 2015). Besides this, in the past
era people did not have any source which provides information to them about the global culture.
Along with it, people were not had any idea about their interest or culture to which they want to
adopt. Further, in previous time people were not curious in relation to the asking of questions in
which any confusion has.
On contrary to this, in the today's globalized city people are connected with each other to
the large extent with the help of internet. In the world of technological advancement there is no
distance between the people. With the help of the internet people can make friends and share
their feelings with the persons who reside in different country. Thus, now people are highly
aware about the different cultures and identity. Along with it, in the present era young people
have freedom to create their identity by their own. Now, people having high level of curiosity in
relation to getting the answers in which they have confusion. Internet is the worldwide tool
which helps individual or young people to read the article and thereby get information about the
cultures to which they want to adopt or follow (Hay and Marsh, 2016). Thus, technological and
communication advancement helps young people in adopting the culture in which they have high
level of interest. On the basis of all the above mentioned aspects it can be stated that interest
provide assistance to young people in becoming the global citizen. Through this, they are able to
able to create their distinct identity by adopting the culture on the basis of their desire or interest.
According to all the above mentioned aspect it can be said that globalization have both
positive and negative consequences upon the economic and social aspects of UK. Due to
globalization young people are able to create the bonding with the global people. In addition to
this, globalization also led to development in the technological and communication department.
Through people are able to create link at global level and there by become able to express their

feeling in terms of fashion, education or other aspects (Ritzer and Dean, 2015). Along with it,
groups which are formed at global level also have high level of influence upon the decision
making of young people. Besides this, globalization also helps country in raising the standard of
living of people.
Along with the benefits, there are several other outcomes of globalization which place
adverse impact upon the economic and social aspects of UK. Globalization had changed the
perception of their citizens in the negative direction. On the basis of basis the globalized city
Britishers are attracted to change their identity and motivated to adopt the different culture.
According to the above cited example most of the UK boys had changed their culture from white
to black. Such activity of UK citizen is very ridicules because each citizen has the responsibility
to respect their culture (Caraccioli and Wright, 2015). In addition this, in the globalized city or
world Britishers is highly confused in relation to their identity. They had started to compare their
identity with color. On the basis all the consequences it has been identifying that relationship
which take place between the young people and globalization is highly ambiguous. Thus,
globalization having both positive and negative consequences upon acquiring and formation of
sense of place and social identity.
