How does mobile mapping and GPS relate to remote sensing? What differentiates
mobile mapping from basic GPS data collection?
The combination of remote sensing technologies and various navigation is termed as
the mobile mapping system (Cui et al., 2017). Each of these mobile mapping systems has its
own positioning system, camera and lidar, and out of these three components, the positioning
system works on the basis of the GPS, whereas the lidar is a remote sensing method. Remote
sensing technologies are used by the GPS to gather real-time information about the surface of
the earth from a distant platform. The electromagnetic radiations are controlled by GPS using
remote sensing technologies. Both the concept of mobile mapping and GPS coordinates using
the remote sensing technology in order to obtain real-time information about the physical
characteristics of an area.
The process of the collection of geospatial data from a mobile vehicle using diverse
categories of advanced ladders and laser is defined as mobile mapping (Marinelli et al.,
2017). This technique is very much significant to boost the productivity of the mobile
mapping systems, at the same time, it can also be said that the accuracy of the data collection
procedure has improved significantly due to the use of the concept of mobile mapping.
Mobile mapping is very much useful in dynamic surveys whereas, GPS data collection only
considers the static surveys. Each point or region can be occupied for several days using the
GPS data collection method, whereas the data collection procedure of mobile mapping cannot
stick to one point for several days. However, there are connectivity concerns and
interruptions in the GPS data collection procedure, but mobile mapping has no such
challenges associated with it.
