INTRODUCTION
In a general context, health and safety can be considered as a procedure for preventing
injuries or accident in public environment or workplace. It is very important to take preventive
measures against health issues because this is the only way to keep an individual healthy and
thus they are able to perform their daily routine in the most effective manner (Reyes, San-José
and Sancibrian, 2014). In respect of work place as well, people who are concern about their
health would be able to give their best. In this context, NHS which is also known as “National
Health Services” is a healthcare system. This is a national & publicly funded organisation
founded in England. This report will enable to understand the various aspects of healthcare
policies and legislations.

2.1- Use of information related to risk assessment in care planning for individual.
In context given report case study, it can be derived that the problem of obesity have
been rapidly increasing in U.K. There is no serious procedure or prevention taken in order to
control this issue. Bariatrics policy is not at all implemented and result of this can be seen in the
increasing level of obese people in U.K. Policies related to bariatrics should be made in order to
deal with obesity among people.(Mention which policies?)
By collecting information about risk assessment can actually help in planning a better
health care for obese people (Dėjus and Antuchevičienė, 2013). All the parameters should be
noted down and after giving full attention to it, a sound healthcare planning can be made.
After analysing all the factors that are required to make a good health care plan,
organisations should modify or even introduce new policies which will be very helpful in
resolving the problem related to handling and moving the bariatrics patients. Several provisions
can be made so that bariatrics patients can find comfort and their health can be improved.
It is important to have a risk assessment plan for the patient based on the risk of obesity
they carries. The risk factor may be based on different factors considering their health. The gide
provided to them amd care plan prepared must be directly related to the risk assessment made

which can be different in case of each patient. Bariatric patients have a certain kind of life risk
that is associated. Variation in the nutritional level can also affect their well being further
demanding for better health care Plan for them. Hence, the care plan made must help in
providing them comfortable life and increase the incidence of well being.
2.2- Impact of health care policies in health and social care practices.
There is a major connection of health care policies with all prevailing social care
exercises. Particularly in respect of the given case study, if provision and policies are not made in
context of bariatrics sector, then this will affect the handling and lifting in health care practices
(McCall, 2011). No organisation can work beyond their restricted area. For conducting any
activity, people need to follow some norms and therefore, government have made different
policies for several sectors so that organisation can work under this boundary.
Government have to ensure that Bariatrics patient should get relief and for this they need
to make good policies. This will further instruct the health care organisation to make their own
plans, measures and precautions for obese population. There is a strict need of decreasing the
rate of obese patient in U.K because this is affecting the overall health rate of the country. This
indicates the prevailing health and safety measures in the environment and can affect the growth
of economy. Health and safety policy plays a vital role in improving the health and safety of
people as mentioned in this case study. If legislations are made for healthcare than various
equipment and tools for the health safety of patient will be made and thus accepted by the cited
hospital.

The policies and procedures made for the patients are based on the risk assessment table
and the decision must be made based on basic decision matrix. The drug delivery made to the
patients plays a vital role in decision making. Further, presence of technology and strength of the
patient are important factors. Government need to make sure that the whole decision of increase
in the obesity in UK requires an assessment of the risk already facing the issue. It will help in
better delivery of policies and procedures that can be utilised to cure the obesity in the country.
2.3- Dilemma of healthcare workers in respect of safety policies and health legislations.
In any sector of organisation, it is essential to know about their core value, mission and
objective. In context of health care services, all the associated authority should know their core
goal. In this regards, the chances of dilemma in social and health care workers can also arises.
There can be several reasons of generating these dilemmas in the workers. Some of the reasons
are given below-
Less knowledge about work area- If workers do not aware about their core role and
responsibility then this will create ambiguity in the mind of workers (Johansson, Rask and

Stenberg, 2010). They would not be able to perform better in their preferred area. So it is the
responsibility of top management to ensure their role and duties.
Lack of communication- For implementing any new health care plan in the
organisation, it is essential to convey the basic procedures under this. If management is lacking
in communication, then workers do not get the requires and necessary current information.
Now the result of dilemma in workers are as follows:
Health care workers will not be fully dedicated towards their work- A very bad effect
of dilemma in workers can be seen in the ways by which they are doing their work. Any type of
ambiguity related to their role and responsibility will result in less effective output in their work.
Bariatrics patients will suffer due to their overweight and they also do not get proper cure and
comfort.
Less attention given to the patients- This is again a drawback of dilemma that is health
care workers will not be able to give their full attention towards patients. Ultimately, with respect
to the given case study, obese people will suffer more.
Patient and doctor ratio- The availability of health care workers is less in comparison to
the availability of patients.
Change in nutritional levels- It is important for an obese undergoing bariatric surgery to
have proper control over their nutritional levels. It becomes problematic for the health care
workers to maintain the time to time record of nutritional levels of the patients.
Lacks of risk assessment competency- health workers are not able to take wise
decisions for the patients by assessing the risk associated to the bariatric surgery.
2.4- Effect of non- compliance with respect to health and safety legislation.
Non- compliance can be considered a failure in context of what so ever an individual was
planning to do. Effect of this can be very serious in health and social care workplace . It is a
well-known fact that if health and safety measure will not be taken at workplace then this will
definitely hamper the health of individual. Specifically, in the context of workplace, an employee
needs safer working conditions, so that they can give their best performance with immense zeal.
Health and safety legislation willmust be followed by organisations in order to ensure their basic
norms against safety issues (Bjerkan, 2010). Effect of non-compliance will result in the
following major impact on health and social care at workplace.

Delay in health care- One of the major impact of this can be seen in the delay of health
improvement of an individual at work place. Any delay or carelessness in the health of a person
will lead to affect their overall health. A person's capability of work is directly connected with
their health and thus there should be no carelessness in the health of an individual.

As per the given case study, Surrey and Sussex healthcare under NHS trust are a provider
of clinical as well as non-clinical services. They have developed many measures of healthcare
equipment such as beds, couches, trolleys, mattresses, chairs and hoists. Health and safety
practices can be monitored and reviewed on the basis of some following points:
Management need to make a review plan. For estimating and applying health and safety
measures properly, management of healthcare need to take a review of their performance. This
can be based upon their past as well as current actions. For this purpose, they need to make plan
for it and thus a number of healthcare objective can be achieved.
Taking preventing actions. In context of given case study, the senior back care advisor,
commonly known as BCA have initiated a project that will measure the level of risk associated
with equipment at clinical areas (Papadopoulos, Georgiadou and Michaliou, 2010). They have
taken many preventive actions by making a team of finance manager, nurse manager, trust board

member, infection control nurse, tissue visibility nurse. This will help in developing preventive
actions as per their respective areas.
Evaluating the overall performance and this is again a very effective method by which the
above mentioned healthcare trust can actually work for their target (Wilks, Stephen and Moore,
2013). By giving a full consideration in the evaluation of overall performance by their
organisation, they can actually monitor all the healthcare practices.
Altering the plan is very important. after evaluating the current healthcare plan.
Organisation further work upon the alteration of present safety measures and tools. By doing
this, some safety better precautions with the help of a new plan can be taken. This will definitely
improve the health of any individual.

the help of which above company can monitor and review their performance in the area of
healthcare.
3.2- Effectiveness of health care policies for ensuring positive safety culture.
Healthcare policies are very important for ensuring and monitoring the health of any
individual (Hohnen and Hasle, 2011). That is the reason every government have made some set
of legislation and policies in order to deal issues under healthcare. Effectiveness under healthcare
policies can be evaluated on the basis of various points.
Improving the health of people is very essential so that they can completely focus
towards their personal as well as in their professional field.. In order to perform in the most
effective manner, individual need to be both physically as well as mentally fit.Energy level of
individual should be high in order to perform any task.. As mentioned in the case study, that
organisations are working on equipment with the help of which patients can feel better. They
provide a level of comfort to all patient. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the efficiency of
healthcare polices in order to maintain health of an individual. People will definitely feel
energise and thus their work effectively will also increase and they will be able to perform best
in their workplace.
People can develop innovative ideas. If people are healthy and safe then definitely they
will be more open towards the development of new ideas and plan (Alexander, Caleb and Daniel
2010). This will lead to discover new ideas and hence organisation can find better ways of
growth in the market.

positive safety culture. This is because if healthcare trust can effectively implement the policies
and legislation than this will help in improving the overall health of an individual and thus they
can perform better in their organisation.
3.3- Contribution of my own plan.
There are basically two aspects of effective evaluation in the context of given report. This
is on the basis of either personal level or professional level. I have tried my level best to make a
guideline which can be helpful in enhancing the healthcare practices at workplace
(Christophorou 2013). I have applied all the necessary legislation and policies related to health
and safety for minimizing injuries and illness. This will lead to improve the service quality as
well. I will make sure that there has to be some discipline at healthcare setting in order to get
patient satisfaction.

can actually get to know the reason behind
doing any task and thus it creates a sense of
acceptance.
