Introduction
Human nature is highly complex and passes through different stages in life. Faimberg (2018),
stated several existing factors can work on developing an individual’s personality. These factors
mentioned above can be further subdivided into external and internal factor. In understanding
each and every stage, it becomes crucial to consider the possible, internal and external factors for
obtaining better understanding of behaviour and action (Lachman, 2015). The aspect of midlife
is often considered as an important phase. Theorists often attest the fact, during the midlife an
individual is seen to experience a series of emotions and events that can play an important role in
shaping their personality. Family background, social status, relationship and even early schooling
is seen to play important role in developing personality during later stages of life. The term
midlife crisis is used to define the condition marked with low self-confidence, coupled with
feelings of anxiety and disappointment.
Midlife crisis is a term that is marked by a period of psychological distress leading to depression
(Henning, 2018). The intrinsic factor pertaining to midlife crisis is often termed as a way marked
with transition in life that demands extreme mental strength to be accepted. External factors such
as occupation, relationship with co-workers is a precursor of midlife crisis. A study conducted
by Cieslik (2017), defined the stages in three types, physical, psycho-social and cognitive
change. The term physical change can be termed as change within the appearance and looks. On
the other hand, the cognitive change is often termed to be change in perceived thoughts and
reasoning of an individual. Finally, the term psychosocial change is termed as change in
emotions used by adults in socialising with one another, the social development thus makes use
of two important domains of social skills and intelligence.

The possible psychosocial changes during the midlife in regards to gender
In order to obtain a better understanding about the ways of changes in regards to midlife crisis,
theorists have stressed over exhibiting a great understanding of the domains related to social
competence and intelligence
Intelligence at social level
The term social intelligence was defined through various versions. However, Keeling, Smith and
Fisher (2016), define social intelligence as capability to recognise and alter a person, in
accordance to intention, temperament and even inspiration. In light of the exact factors, such as
motives and moods play an important role in shaping behaviour of an adult individual and how
they are seen to interact with one another. Cheng, Powdthavee and Oswald (2015), pointed out
the fact, midlife of an adult links to the is often marked as age of maturity and social intelligence
to understand other person within certain scenarios
Social Competence
Social competence is the second domain that describes the midlife, was defined by Rinaldi et al.
(2018), as capacity to liaise in right way to different demands at interpersonal levels, adopting to
social behaviour in obtaining benefits in accordance to social morals and norms
Self-Awareness: The term is used to refer the ability of an individual. This on the other hand
helps to understand one self, based on self-confidence and awareness, is a precursor to honest
assessment of their personality. A research conducted by Schmidt (2018), females are seen to
exhibit higher levels of dexterity at managing and guiding emotions; that helps women to guide
their emotions and come out of midlife crisis. However, Ballard, Kuh and Wadsworth (2001),
pointed out the fact that women tend to exhibit higher level of self-awareness in relation to the

time passing by and thus are often prone to high chances of midlife crisis. In similar regards
Green (2016), opposed the statement telling men are subjected to enhanced level of self-
awareness due to surrounding social structure of better life and job making them prone to midlife
crisis.
Social awareness: Social awareness is often referred to as an understanding of other person’s
belief, reactions and even understanding in regards to a particular situation. Schwandt (2015)
stated that midlife crisis is an increasing problem irrespective of gender. However, the crisis is
prominent in males, as compared with female counterparts. However, men are seen to exhibit a
particular form of identity crisis often spilling into family life. Men in their midlife crisis is often
trapped due to the feeling of hopelessness in regards to prevailing identity. Fuelled by acute
awareness of time passing, men are subjected to empty emotions creating a pressure to break out.
As observed by Lachman (2004), the desperation in men to look for vitality and pleasure is often
an engendering factor in midlife crisis.
With males in their midlife, a balance between limits and restraint is maintained leading to issues
of autonomy. Opportunity and mastery is initiated from self-exploration and not due to outward
rebellion (Valero and Agnes, 2019). The key is understanding that the ongoing protest is an
internal conflict over self-perception and constraints from the past. Natural midlife development
in men is seen to elicit awareness in regards to the needs that were not expressed previously
(Chang, 2018). In men with past histories of increasing levels of social awareness lead to
misinterpreted signals and intention to flee; those who could not overcome the anxiety were
subjected to midlife crisis.
Self –management: The handling of emotions and reacting to the situation is important, it helps
in understanding oneself, while accomplishing the goals in frustrated and even in critical
