HEALTH ASSESSMENT 2
Introduction
According to McKinnon (2016), reflection is defined as the ability to examine own
thoughts, actions and feelings. Reflection is a useful method for nurses to examine their practice
and allow themselves to change circumstances or actions in future. The following assessment
deals with my reflection on the underlying analogy and physiology of a respiratory system. In
order to reflect my thoughts and actions upon my understanding of human respiratory system, I
utilized the Gibbs Reflective Model. This specific model allows us to systematically think about
our experiences during a specific activity or event and adjust our behavior accordingly (Hilliard,
James & Batt, 2017).
Reflection on Assessment
Description of the event
The assessment started with the identification of the rationale for assessing the anatomy
and physiology of respiratory system of a human being. The physical examination began with
commencement of history taking. As history of a patient determines specific health issues, it
could have been explained in a detailed manner (Grenness, et. al, 2015). In order to complete the
assessment, I started with gathering the necessary equipment required during the assessment. I
also kept a general observation sheet to observe the changes in patient’s respiratory system and
other vital organs. This assessment required me to prepare the patient for the procedure. I
managed to follow the required steps such as providing privacy to the patient to change their
clothes, making the patient sit, examine the body being examined. All these activities conducted
well without compromising the safety and comfort of the patient. The pulmonary examination
required steps like inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation.
Feelings
During the examination, I felt the need to adhere the rules and procedures as it would
maintain the safety and comfort of the patient. I was aware of my responsibilities of maintaining
Hand hygiene throughout the process. As suggested by Des Jardins & Burton (2019), assessing a
patient’s respiration and respiratory effort is an important part of the physical examination of
their respiratory system, ensuring the use of systematic process is also important. The physical
examination reveals any abnormality in the patient’s breathing pattern or rhythm. The hand
