Question one
As the world progresses and realizes the benefits of technology, the progression of
disease around the world is increasing with more disease being discovered due to an increased
number of gene mutations. This means that as the diseases become more complicated, it also
becomes difficult to use the orthodox approaches of the past to diagnose and treat such diseases.
This is the reason why technology is offering a better environment for determining the sequence
of the disease through ways like the polymerase chain reaction and gene sequencing to discover
the causative agents of the disease. As the world progresses, there seem to be new diseases that
are coming up and some are related to the advances of the society (So & Ruiz-Esparza, 2012).
This implies that although the orthodox approaches of the past used to work well, it becomes so
difficult to deal with the issues that exist in deterring the challenges of the disease. This model
can be related to the events of the Second World War which showed the world that war
technology had developed more than medical technology. This means that one way that the use
of technology can be justified to keep up with the changing world and the nature of the new
disease that is coming up. For example, cancer has increased in the population due to the nature
of lifestyle which can be attributed to the developments that the world has witnessed. This
implies that the world needs to understand that technology in healthcare is one way of keeping
up with the world.
Technology has advanced healthcare and moved in beyond traditional history making it
easy for the healthcare system to trace the nature of the disease and even the history of the
individual to determine how it can be treated or tackled. For example, PET technology allows
doctors to analyze amyloid plaques which can be detected early and prevented before one

develops Alzheimer’s disease. This means that through genome sequencing, technology allows
the use of personal genomic to analyze the genome of the patient which gives information that
can be used to detect and even prevent diseases before they occur (Hofmann, 2011). Thus the
difference in the use of technology to connect the patient to the healthcare system. Further, there
are new technologies that apply remote sensing which allows the doctor and the patient to
connect thus not requiring the physical presence of the patient. This has changed the way
healthcare is approached and even improved the role of the patient from a passive participant to
an active participant.
Question two
The healthcare system has changed from a non-profit to a profit system where the
institution relies on profitability to manage its operations. Since the government has been unable
to provide quality healthcare services to the public, it means that the issue of healthcare should
be left to the private business world. This implies that hospitals have to cut costs and merge their
service to realize profit (Ricketts, 2010). This has been attributed to the failures of the
government to develop healthcare reforms that gave room for the private sector to promote
healthcare. This led to market-oriented changes that allowed competition to enter the healthcare
sector to shape the nature and value that is attached to the services that are offered.
The changing nature of hospitals has shifted the focus from the treatment of patients to
making profits. This means that hospitals have started charging what they see as feasible and
related to the nature of profits that they need to make. The U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services (2019) suggests that in a market economy, organizations exist to make profit
meaning that every initiative that takes place is supposed to be based on the number of gains that
they make. This means that the commercialization of the healthcare system has helped the public
