According to the World Health Organization (2019), health promotion can be
defined as the process of providing people with the ability to have control
over health and to improve their health. Health promotion is important in the
overall health of an individual at any point of life (Edelman et al. 2017), and
it works towards achieving physical, social and mental wellbeing. Through
health promotion, the quality of life is improved and also health is protected.
This is because the health promotion strategies are applied at the primary,
secondary and tertiary level of care. This, therefore, ensures that the
treatment, as well as the main causes of illness, are looked into, and
appropriate interventions applied. This essay will focus on health promotion
strategies for the chosen client in the case study. The chosen case study is of
Ruby Pascal, a 43-year-old female, who has been admitted to the medical
ward due to her frequent presentations to the Emergency Department. She
has a history of poorly self-managed type 2 diabetes and a general anxiety
disorder which has been getting worse as a result of personal concerns. The
identified problems for Ruby are frequent anxiety attacks, lack of physical
exercise and use of unprescribed drugs. This essay will justify the
interventions and health promotions strategies that have been chosen for
Ruby Pascal.
The first problem for Ruby is frequent anxiety attacks. Ruby has been
admitted to the medical ward with the diagnosis of severe anxiety attacks.
She also has a past history of General Anxiety Disorder and has been
experiencing worsening anxiety attacks. The intervention to address this

problem includes both pharmacological and non-pharmacological support.
The pharmacological support may include the administration of her
occasional drug (Prozac), which is prescribed by her GP. However, the
physician will have to review her first and include other drugs that will be of
help. Moreover, non-pharmacological support will be provided to Ruby in
order to address her frequent anxiety attacks. This may necessitate the
involvement of multidisciplinary approach. As a nurse, I will need to educate
the patient on the importance of seeking medical help from any medical staff
whenever there is a problem without necessarily waiting to meet her GP
(Stewart et al. 2013). This is because any urgent medical issue should be
addressed promptly. In addition, I will link her with other health care
providers, such as a psychologist. Ruby finds it difficult to get a psychologist
in Brisbane and therefore, it will great for her to be linked with one. The
psychologist will help her be able to cope up with stress since she has
forgotten what she used to do that worked. Her anxiety also started after her
husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer and provided emotional support
will also help to promote her health.
Secondly, Ruby's lack of physical exercise could be worsening her condition.
This is because Ruby has type II Diabetes Mellitus and hence the physical
exercise is essential in the management. Physical activity helps in the
management of diabetes by controlling blood sugar levels and minimizing
the risk of nerve damage and heart disease (Asif, 2014). The interventions
for this problem include patient education and the involvement of a
