INTRODUCTION Countries are enriched with number of resources which enable them to improve theireconomic situation and bring development in number of aspects. Government, legislative bodiesand other organization adopt different methods to attract tourist from around the Globe andshowcase their offerings. In the recent times, culture and heritage tourism has been evolved tothe great extent. Since the inception of tourism in informal manner to the current time when thereare planned trips and tours, domain has been widened to the great extent. Earlier culture andheritage tourism was limited to the informal movement of group of people to religious and holyplaces but at present, a systematic and planned approach is adopted by the organization tocapture the attention of people of natives as well as people from cross border and distant places.Report is prepared to elucidate different dimensions of culture and heritage tourism such as itsgrowth and development, working of different organizations and their engagement of differentcountries such as UK and Tibet. TASK 11.1 The growth and development of the heritage and cultural industryThe heritage and cultural tourism is a branch of tourism mainly emphasizing the factorslike living culture, art, history, natural resources and ethical premise of a place. This branch oftourism is quite a new phenomenon still its routes can be traced back in the ancient times ofhuman history (Al-hagla, 2010). In the ancient times of UK tangible and intangible culture,natural resources and heritage resulted in framing today's contemporary world growing culturalheritage industry. In the 1900's in order to facilitate better growth and development of the sectorvarious international bodies were incorporated and documents were proposed. Some of themwere Athens Charter 1931, Roerich Pact 1935, International Institute for Conservation, HagueConvention for the Protection of Cultural property in the Event of Armed Conflict (Adams andMulligan, 2012).By the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century in UK new trendsemerged in the cultural and heritage industry. Some modern characteristic elements attributed theneed for valuing the traditional cultural heritage an immense importance. The touristsrepresented a higher educational background (Booyens, 2010). Majority of tourist’s interestshifted to heritage and cultural tourism in comparison of some other branches of tourism. As a1

result the vast majority of cities, towns, villages and settled landscapes of UK start developingtheir concerned areas in the form of heritage importance. The local authorities laid emphasis ondevelopment of successful and effective heritage communications strategies and policies. Theystarted providing a variety of tools, including an outline structure for training workshops,communicating heritage values to visitors so that a memorable tourist experience could beattained. Later, the cultural tourism of UK came into existence as a chief regulator of culture andarts to attract more and more visitors. It became lifeline for overall tourism sector and trackedenormous growth in the tourism sector (Carreira and Kagan, 2011). In the context of the same,there became two categories of cities where cultural tourism became primary objective oftourism policy. Among them the first one is 'declining cities' such as Glasgow, Liverpool andBirmingham in the UK. Here the aim is to attract new investment and to generate physical andenvironmental renewal through service industries' expansion. The other major category of citiesis 'cultural capitals' such as London and Edinburgh. These are major cultural cities and needheavy investment in cultural infrastructure. The industry started offering high opportunities forgrowth in the economy as compared to other industrial sectors. The consequence was growingnumber of employment. Also, it gave recognition to the culture and heritage, protection of themonuments and sculptures, regard the communities their esteem, understand its values to buildstrong relationships. It defined the elements of our inherited past that we value, presentation oftrue stories of the past and present. Nowadays, in UK much emphasis is led to determine themanagement policies and procedure to intensify the culture of this industry. Various aspects arestudied and researched to embark a cultural heritage project (Chhabra, 2010). The areas ofsignificance such as historical, social, aesthetic and scientific serve as key features to work. Since, 2010 tourism has been the fastest growing sector in the UK's economy inemployment terms. Britain is forecast to have a tourism industry worth over £257 billion by2025. The studies predict an annual growth rate of 3.8% till 2025 significantly faster than theoverall UK economy in comparison with construction, retail and manufacturing sectors.According to UNWTO figures UK ranked 8th in the International tourist arrival league and 9th inthe international tourism earning league. 2
