1. Access the document used to report hazards in your service environment, and the
policy and procedures relating to this report.
Hazards can be avoided by accessing it, identifying the risks to health and safety that
hazards create. Hazards can be reported by workplace inspections, consulting with the
workers, injury, illness, trauma and the maintenance report that would provide an
overall image about what is happening in the organisation.
2. Identify a hazard in your work environment (or use the residual risk example in this
section). Use the report from question 1 to record the issues.
One example of a work place hazards is the stroke that can be caused due to excessive
heat or working for a prolonged period of time in the sun, excessive heat generated in
the factories are also detrimental.
3. Check the policy to find out who you should report issues to. Discuss your
completed report with this person and how you could improve the way you complete

Self: We are all extremely focused on carrying out our tasks at the workplace. However,
sometimes certain hazards occur that lead to untoward consequences and affect the
members. ’ll discuss today on the PPE and the safety precautions that we need to follow
while working in a childcare service centre.
Educator 1: Why do we need to discuss on safety measures? I believe we abide by the
rules accordingly.
Educator 2: What is a PPE? Will this discussion benefit us?
Self: PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. I am sure we will be immensely
benefitted by this interaction.
Educator 1: So, tell us what do you want us to know about PPE?
Self: PPE is a term generally applied to items that are worn with the aim of
safeguarding a person from any health hazards at the workplace. It acts as a barrier
between the person who is wearing it and the hazard that can cause him a harm.
Educator 2: Is it something like a jacket?
Self: Not really. It does not act as a substitute for any other safety measure like
workplace engineering. It is used to prevent potential injuries due to health hazards. The
control standards are identified, appropriate PPE are provided for employers and
participants at a workplace and the employees are trained on effective usage methods.
PPE generally involve eye and face protection gears, corrective prescription lenses,
protective eyewear like faces shields and spectacles, head protection gears and foot and
leg protection objects.
Educator 1: Why is head protection gear needed?
Self: A head injury can be fatal for any adult or children. At a childcare service centre,
if the employees or children suffer a fall from the staircase or an elevated concrete area,
their brain can get severely damaged. It can lead to severe neurological impairment and
can even be fatal. Wearing a safety headgear is one of the easiest ways to avoid such
fatal injuries.
Educator 2: What about the application of foot equipments? Could you please
elaborate?
Self: Sure. Legs and foot are liable to get crushed or injured if any heavy tool or sharp
instruments fall on them. Electrical hazards can also lead to an injury to the limbs.
Special purpose shoes can prevent injury from electric hazards. Leggins are a PPE item
that can protect the lower legs and feet from any injury. PPE like gloves, finger guards
and arm coverings help in arm protection.
Educator 1: Now I understand the use of PPE. How soon can we implement application
of these items at our workplace?
Self: The sooner PPE are applied at a workplace, the better will be the chances of
avoiding any injuries or health hazards. We need to understand PPE and its care
practices to effectively contribute to hazard reduction at the workforce.

Childcare providers are always involved in providing a safe and protective environment.
They ensure the well-being of the children in their childcare service centres. The
different safety service policies that are present modify the environment, for modifying
the behaviour and children activity. These policies ensure that all parents and educators
should constantly monitor and supervise the children. They should teach injury-
preventive behaviours to the children. They should follow safety actions, make parents
know about safety policies, use devices like electric outlet plugs and smoke alarms and
practice daily safety check routines. Using specific care plans for children with special
needs and rehearsing drills or role-play will decrease the likelihood of any hazards.

To complete this assessment activity, you need:

You have been asked to provide clear, concise information that can be used by new and
existing workers to help them understand the policies, procedures and risk related to a
particular emergency or hazard.
Access your service emergency management plan. Choose one of the hazards that is
included in the risk assessment or training schedule that forms part of this plan: for
example, bushfire, fire, severe weather, flooding, intruders, major medical emergency
and so on.
The hazard chosen is fire at a childcare service centre.
For this particular hazard, collect the following information and documents
1. Policies and procedures
Education and Care Services National Regulations – Regulations 85-89 are
formulated to manage and minimize any form of trauma, incidents, injuries and
illness. Regulations 85-87 need a service with a policy and procedure, which
needs to be followed when any incident of injury or trauma occurs. These
policies consider it essential to notify the parents of the child when such an
incident is met. Regulation 88 states that appropriate action should be taken to
prevent the transmission of infectious diseases. Well equipped first aid kits
should be made available at places where children are being cared for or
educated. Regulation 168 states that there must be an emergency and evacuation
floor plan set out to avoid injuries from such incidents.
National Quality Standard 2 safeguards and promotes child safety and health. It
minimizes risks and protects a child from any injury, harm and infection.
It ensures that each child is adequately supervised, has provisions for
development of healthy eating habits, practices hygiene and physical activity.
Every precaution should be taken to protect a child from harm. The coordinator
and educator should be aware of their responsibilities. All children should get
the right to experience best care and education in a comfortable environment.

To protect fire fighters from the fire that occurred due to electrical short circuit, tunics,
pair of leggings, pair of boots, gloves and flash-hoods should be used. These will
protect against any form of burns or serious injuries.
Guardrails are another form of PPE that should be installed in the centre to prevent
injuries form falls. This will prevent a child or educator from falling and getting
severely injured.
Adequate information on these equipments and their utility should be made available to
all staff and parents who are involved in the childcare centre.

1.What would you say to encourage Belinda to report the issue? Write down what you
would say to Belinda and explain your reasons.

scenario, Belinda can be encouraged by explaining to her rights as an employee and the
details of workplace health and safety maintenance policies application for the nation.

WHS. Your objective is to ensure they promptly report maintenance issues.
It is extremely important for the workplace staff to report any workplace safety or
maintenance issue. It has to be understood that hazards are extremely common
occurrences in the workplaces and the only manner to stop the hazards from occurring
altogether is to report the nature of the hazard and the contributors of the hazard to the
authority, so that the hazardous issue can be dealt. WHS or the workplace health and
safety is the policy that safeguards the health and safety of the staff while in workplace.
It comprises of all the necessary protocols and standards to follow in case of any
hazardous situation in the workplace and also in order to maintain the health and safety
of the staff in the workplace while safe keeping the hazard causing materials. I would
arrange for a group session with my team member where i will give a presentation

the team members to clear out any confusion they might have. Along with that the
members will also receive a manual handout about maintenance reporting and how that

components of the WHS and adhere to the practice standards. However in order for the
entire staff to know about the importance of the WHS, there is need for them to be

We organized a fire drill practice at our childcare centre the previous day. The fire
emergency plan was rehearsed to make the children at the centre learn what they should
do and how they should respond if a fire ever occurs. I basically work in a room that
contains toddlers aged 1-3 years. There were 13 children who participated in the drill. I
signalled them that if they ever hear somebody shouting “Fire! Fire!” they should not
hide under the tables and chairs. As soon as one of my colleagues set up the fire alarm, I
took the children under my custody and headed towards the front gate of the centre. I
decided that the playground was the best place to go. I explained to the children that if
they ever hear a fire alarm, they should leave everything behind and systematically
leave the premises without creating a chaos. I announced “Time for evacuation! Follow
me!” and pointed all the possible exit routes to the toddlers.
I shut the door of the room after ensuring that no one was left behind. I put all essential
items like blankets, drinks, snacks, diapers, wipes, first aid kits, biscuits, toys, gloves
and few clothes in an emergency bag. I made the children to walk in a line towards the

playground and ran through the whole thing thrice to make them acquainted. I quickly
made a head count and ensured all children were safely brought out of the room. I also
notified them that the fire department needs to be informed if such an incident ever
occurs.
I recorded the drill log in a sheet. All records regarding the date of rehearsal, the
duration of drill, number of children and adults involved were noted down. The drill
was successful to a great extent. However, some children started to panic on hearing the
alarm and ran under the closets and tables to protect themselves. 2 toddlers started
screaming at loud noises and that caused distress in their friends. A fire emergency drill
should be conducted every alternate month to make sure that the children have enough
knowledge that can be put into practice when they face a similar incident. The
emergency plan report should also be sent to the parents for their evaluation.
