1.1- Introduction
It is common knowledge that the population in London has increased significantly and is
looking to continue over the years.
The graph above (Greater London Authority, Housing in London 2015) shows that the
population in London is on an upwards spiral with no signs of decreasing in the coming
years. The affect this will have on housing will be detrimental as it is no secret that the
population is growing faster than the number of houses being built to accommodate. Housing
building is at it lowest since 1924 and the price for renting and buying has increased
drastically over time. This means that there is a high shortage of affordable homes and more

and more people are struggling to buy/rent houses due to inflation in house prices. This along
with the the slow increase in salary/wages people therefore are likely to seek additional
government help to do so.
2.1 Literature Review
The literature analyses how different researchers have argued about the causes of house crisis
in London which should be addressed by government.
Most of the researchers such as Bailey, Clua-Losada, Huke, Ribera-Almandoz and Rogers
(2018) in their reports they have included how commissioned Bank of England takes the
issue of the housing crisis in England. The house crisis in England has caused a lot of social
challenges and problems which have affected the lives of citizens in London. The idea of
house supply is still cemented to the fact that the supply of new housing in London is still
declining since the 1970s.
The number of houses completed by the England government from 1950 to 2015 (Bailey et
al., 2018 p.12).
