INTRODUCTION

providing better services. Human resource management is a crucial part for an organisation and
it deals with human relations of a company starting from recruitment to employees relations.
Company that has been taken in this assignment is House of Frazer which is a retail organisation
and was established in Glasgow, Scotland. The report will highlight the purpose and functions of
HRM which can be applicable to workforce planning (Abdelhak, Grostick and Hanken, 2014.).
Apart form this, strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to recruitments and selection
process. Along with this, benefits of different HRM practice for both employee and employer is
also included in this report. Effectiveness of different HRM practices in order to increase the
productivity and profit is mentioned in this assignment.

P1 Purpose and functions of HRM for workplace planning
Human resource management is considered as an important element that is used in order
to provide employment so that development of people can be done. Thus, it can be said that
HRM is a practice through which company tries to maintain a better position at market area.
Along with this, their prime role is to manage the employees relation so that a effective growth
can be seen. Therefore, the main purpose department of human resource department is to provide
a better environment where employees can sit and work properly. In context with House of
Frazer, human resource department is helping them in generating more and more revenues by
providing better services to its customers ( Alfes and et al., 2013).
Functions of Human Resource Management
In House of Frazer, the prime function of HR manager is to hire suitable candidates who
can help the organisation in running their business in an effective manner. Thus, some of the
main functions that are performed by the department is mentioned below:
Recruitment and selections procedures: It is considered as an main functions, through
this process company try to hire eligible candidates who can fit best for the job. In terms of
House of Frazer, they are selecting individuals who can interact with customers easily. This will
gradually increase the sales and profitability at the same time.

identifying the rising star or the person with best skills and knowledge. This will help them in

that decision is taken in quick speed.

Strengths: Basic main strengths of this approach is that it saves induction cost of the
organisation. In terms of employees, as workers are familiar with the environment, this will help

employees who are good in their work. This will gradually increase the sales and productivity of

Weakness: The major drawback of this is that it can creates a tensions at workplace. If
the appropriate appraisal is not given to the employees than this may demotivate them and
consequences can be seen in their performance. Sometimes this approach can be complex as
manager may find it difficult to give right appraisal to the right person.
External approach of recruitment: Under this, company undertakes recruitment and
section process for this, they give advertisements regarding the post that is vacant. This enable
them in attracting more and more candidates towards their organisation. In context with the
company new employees will help them in applying innovative ideas so as to increase their sales

will significant time period. As a result it can decrease the productivity level of the organisation.

who are suitable for the job. For this, most of the companies apply various approaches that are
