Impact of Contemporary Issues on Hospitality and Tourism Industry
The concept of traveling for pleasure, business, and entertainment or for any other causes comes
under tourism. Tourism is the combined term used for expressing the tours, travels, food, etc
which can be done nationally or internationally. On the other hand, hospitality is considered as
the element inside tourism as it is related to accommodation, vehicles and hotels acquired at the
time of travelling. Tourism is much wider term them hospitality as it provides a base to the
accommodations, vehicles and hotels of the tourists (Cooper and Hall, 2012). In today world
people are travelling worldwide for the sake of entertainment or for accomplishment of their
work, hence the concept of tourism has become popular a lot. With the increasing scope of
worldwide tourism, the contemporary issues related to hospitality and tourism have also
increased immensely.
In this study the contemporary issues faced by tourism and hospitality industry in terms of social,
environmental and technological perspectives are identified. Their impact on the development of
tourism and hospitality industry also analysed and compared with current societal trends. The
study focused on achieving the expertise in marketing strategies to promote and manage
operations of BestTours Organization in tourism as well as hospitality industry.
Identification of Contemporary Issues Influencing the Development of the Tourism and
Hospitality Industry
Social issues: There are many social issues, which can impact the expansion of tourism as well
as hospitality trade. The main issues can be the choice of preferences, changing expectations,
earning power and security concerns. The restaurants, as well as guesthouses, are fronting a
reassurance to offer added vegetarian as well as vegan food for contemporary dinner, which is
also considered as one of the main social issues. The vegan society has released the statics in
which it states that the series of vegetarians in UK had become more than the last few years. It
has been analyzed in which 74% of meat-eaters relish eating vegetarian food. Therefore, any
hotel, bar or cafe which does not propose vegetarian as well as vegan menus are lost out millions
of possible consumers. Furthermore, expectations of the consumers are changing rapidly
specially with air transportation companies or hotels, which are enhancing the burden of
satisfying consumers. This is in turn highly affecting the sale as well as revenue of the
companies of tourism and hospitality industry (Oskam, and Boswijk, 2016).

Environmental issues: There are certain environmental issues which can affect expansion of the
tourism as well as hospitality business in the UK. The matters include greenhouse gas emissions,
climate changes, human encroachment, including harming of flora and fauna. Almost each issue
influence tourism and hospitality industry or its operations in different manner. Due to this the
UK government has introduced many laws and regulations in UK to protect the environment;
however, the policies must be fulfilled by companies of hospitality or tourism industry in an
effective manner. This in turn enhances the overall cost of the hotels and air transport that create
great impact over the revenue of the hospitality as well as tourism business. Also, the issue of
climate change is a major problem as none of the tourists would prefer to choose a destination
under the bad climate circumstances. Also, cutting trees to build something for the development
of tourism and hospitality is not feasible and it requires the permission of authorities (Conrady,
and Buck, 2010)
Technological issues: The other issue that affects the expansion of tourism as well as hospitality
trade contains changes occurred in technology. This can create a great impact on operations of
companies related to hospitality and tourism industry of UK. It is always said that the overuse of
technology is harmful like the advancement of the internet provides an option for speedy work
but most of the people misuse it and try to do various types of fraudulent activities. Hacking is
one the biggest threat of technology or one can consider it among one of the technologies based
contemporary issue that may be faced by hospitality or tourism industry. It enables hacker to get
details of everything uploaded on the internet that is related to the other individual. People
started misusing online services given by hotels, websites and airlines (Hunt, Gao, and Xue,
2014), which has diverse impact on loyalty and commitment of customers towards the
companies catering them.
Analysis of impact of contemporary issues on the hospitality and tourism industry
Social issues: There are diverse impact of contemporary issues on the development and
management of operations of hospitality and tourism industry. Social issues are considered one
among the top identified issues which impact the working of hotels and travel companies. The
prevailing changes in society or the community in which the company exist or conduct its
operations transform its operations to great levels. The big companies easily adopt changes and
transform themselves into a new one but the middle or small companies, due to lack of funds and

expertise face heavy losses. The issue of social sustainability also created a bad impact on the
tourism as well as hospitality sector of UK. On the other hand, the influence of social-political
issues of UK such as to win in the elections, political leaders raise new schemes, discounts and
benefits to the general public can also causes loss to companies of tourism and hospitality
industry (Cooper & Hall, 2012).
Environmental issues: Environmental issues in UK as well as worldwide are huge and their
impact on hospitality and tourism industry is also wider which cannot be ignored. Few humans
as investors mainly try to open hotels, businesses houses, tourism companies, etc near amazing
wonders of environment, in order to attract more customers and make more profits. The precious
natural area where human encroachment comes gets invaded by humans, which hampers the
environment. It causes an effect on animals to find their habitat away from forests or mountains
like in villages. Therefore, the visitors consider such kind of places as a threat and also, fear of
animals stops them to come there. Furthermore, the deforestation done by investors to make
hotels or any building is now restricted by the government up to a certain limit. Thus, it creates
barriers in the development of the tourism as well as hospitality industry in the UK in terms of
negative use of environment (Hall, 2010).
Technological issues: The technological issues have also created a great impact on the
hospitality and tourism industry. It is so because there has been an increasing awareness of
creating value through technology for the customers, however which most of the hospitality
companies do not take the advantage of them. They face the challenge in understanding how
much competence could be improved through uses of such technology. Online bookings, sorting
of grievances, getting easily updates etc., all these activities have great impact on tourism and
hospitality but in other sense, there is a bad impact also, as it has reduced the physical meetings,
no personal relations. To pace with the technological development, tourism companies started
borrowing money which is good up, however up to a certain limit and excess borrowing can lead
to bankruptcy or insolvency. Through technology, any personal information can be easily
ascertained. Such issues create threats among consumers of hospitality and tourism industry
(Mason, 2015). At present, the scenario shows that many companies formed just to cheat the
creditors or customers with the help of the latest technology.

The use of smart phones can also help the tourism and hospitality companies in a way that
customers can easily be in touch with the management, can easily get their doubts or queries

more and it will be available everywhere, which can influence the social issues to great extent.
The current trend of artificial intelligence helps to identify the needs and wants of guests,

scenario, tourism and hospitality companies are updating themselves in the segment of

term sustainability of the tourism and hospitality industry of UK in the future. The entrustment
from customers can create some reputation in the market of the UK. As the rate of insolvency

bad as no one will prefer to go to such a place. Moreover, the places which are very famous but
due to human encroachment or invaded by humans, it is not preferable to go there and visit. It
can be concluded that there are many contemporary issues that create an impact on the
development of tourism and hospitality. The issues also influence future development. The main
issues are social, environmental and technological which creates and influence such
contemporary factors. The issues are created by the general public due to their concern for
nature, environment, health, hygienic material or prices and all of this influences the future
development of tourism and hospitality. The nature is very important and any harmful thing,
