INTRODUCTION
Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) is that part of organisation which will enable the
business to look after the safety and health of all the stakeholders or mainly employees in the
workplace from all type of exposure and risk (Potter and Leka, 2017). Australia is very much
cautious about these workplace hazards and risk which are there and the area which are prone to
it
The Safe Workplaces Act of 2008 is the primary responsibility of employer to improve
the worker’s health and safety and also compensation (Work health and Safety Act 2008
Australia, 2017). The present report is based on Australian Nursing Home Foundation (ANHF)
which is the nursing institute providing the day care and nursing to the patients. Furthermore, it
also explains the current WHS policy of ANHF, risk management policy and risk management
procedures.
1 Analysing WHS policy of ANHF, risk management policy and procedures and whether the
state WHS legislation are followed or not and recommendations for improvements.
All the workplace policies and procedures are followed at ANHF which are related to risk
management and assessment, hazard identification and its assessment and outlining the
framework of the organisation. There are various workers at the ANHF like nurses, midwives,
ward boys and doctors and their safety during the work are very much important (Jamieson,
2017). Hazard is the situation or equipment at workplace which are likely to cause the injury,
damage and illness to workers who are at work.
Risk management policy includes the commitment in order to meet strategic and all the
operational goals that are related to risk management. This policy is reviewed by regular training,
monitoring, auditing and reporting process. The employees and PCBU are meant to apply risk
management principles and practice in their work area. The risk management policy includes:
Directing the process of risk management.
Receiving and then analysing risk management reports and informing it to ANHF board.
Making recommendations to board regarding risk management.
It is the responsibility of board of ANHF to set up the policy committee who is involved in
implementation and risk management in organisation.
1

The role of committee is to:
Ensure ANHF is complying with the legal requirements.
Ensure that risk is effectively managed.
Maintain operations of business
Identification and monitoring of operational risk.
Risk management procedures are the set standard process for management of identified
risk which include the following:
Risk identification is finding of risk that if they occur, will they have negative effect or not.
Risk rating process of analysing each risk and rating them according to their impact. They will
be ranked into four categories of extreme, high, medium and low.
Risk control represent range of action, measure and strategies which are taken by management
and employee to eliminate or reduce risk (Bhandari and Welker, 2016). The process of risk
control includes avoiding, mitigating, transferring and accepting the risk.
Risk monitoring and reporting involve that new risk is identified and considered as they arise,
existing risk are monitored to see the impact on organisation. Reporting will be done on cause of
risk, implication of risk, actions undertaken to control and who was responsible person for
ensuring the risk control in that area.
2 Preparing the report for work team that outline hazard identification and assessment and
development of risk control in the framework of the responsibility of worker and PCBU
and recommendations.
Overview/introduction
Hazard identification is the process to find hazard or risk which are prevailing in
organisation while hazard assessment is the procedure which tell how will that risk or hazard will
be dealt. On the other hand, risk control is minimising the effect of that identified risk
(Gerberick, 2016). PCBU are the employer who are ensuring correct safety measures which are
supported by compliance policy and prosecution guidelines and they are responsible person to
2

carry out measures at workplace. Many of the students or the workers do not have the
knowledge, experience or access to all the safety notice.
Background/issues to be addressed
Issues which need to be addressed are Electric shocks, Death, Fire, Back injury, People smoking
and Burn.
Report details/key points
As in the organisation, some employees are not consulted with the health and safety
frameworks plus on the matter of hazard identification and assessment as well as the
development of risk control. There is also the problem with dissemination of WHS information,
where people such as work experience students do not have the access to all the safety notice
placed on intranet (Elwood, 2017). The responsibility of worker and PCBU are as follows at this
point of time:
Ensure that all the employees and workers are having knowledge about importance of
safety measures.
They are given the training about the health and safety measures within workplace.
Summary of key points:
The area of lounge and activity of ANHF must be kept safe and ensure all the safety
measures. It is the duty of person conducing the business or undertaking (PCBU) so that they can
carry out the safety measures more efficiently. WHS legislation, regulation and code of practice
say that the PCBU should ensure the correct safety measures which are supported by Compliance
policy and prosecution guidelines.
Conclusion/recommendations:
The owner of business is mostly responsible for the health and safety of their workers and
employees who are working there.
The employee also need to be consulted about such matters (Sandström, Zurich and
Tschudi-Monnet, 2017). Work health and Safety Act of 2011 underlines that the worker

who is been employed at workplace must be aligned with the Person Conducting the
Business or Undertaking (PCBU).
The risk of fire which is very possible to occur in nursing home must be handled in most
proper way so that it does not occur again in the future.
3 Complete a hazard analysis for nurse station at ANHF and recording on WHS hazard
identification form.

electricity is prone to area of lounge and activity room at ANHF and the risk at
these places are of burns, electric shocks, fire and even death (Evans, Gourio and
