Selection of a nursing-sensitive
quality indicator:
The nursing quality indicators
specifically focus on three aspects
of nursing that include, structure,
process and outcome.
The Nursing-Sensitive Quality
Indicator that has been chosen for
this project include: ‘Controlling rate
of nosocomial infection and
promoting patient safety.’

What is NDNQI®
 NDNQI® refer to the National Database of Nursing Quality
Indicators that comprises of a database of the quality
management program.
 The program was developed in the year 1998 by a collective
effort of the American Nurses Association.
 The database allows care professionals to browse through the
important patient data on subjects such as Nursing Hours per
Patient Day, Assault/Injury Rates, Fall/Injury rates, Nursing Staff
Skill Mix, Percentage of HAI and so on

 Accordingly, nurses can work on the identified quality area
priority and adapt measures to improve quality of care delivery.

Justification for selection of
quality indicator.
 The rationale for the choice of the
quality indicator can be explained
as the increased prevalence of
nosocomial infections within the
patient post 72 hours of
hospitalization.
 Research data suggests that the
current prevalence rate of
nosocomial infection within the
healthcare organizations is
equivalent to 1.7 million annually
which can be considered equivalent
to1 in every 17 patients that is
hospitalised acquires nosocomial
infections (Twigg et al., 2016).
