2. As outlined by Baumeister and Bushman (2011, p. 130) pursuing goals involves at least 2
major steps. Consider these two steps with your goal in mind, and complete the table below:

The goal that I have chosen to pursue is to improve my decision making skill. I feel that this is
one of the most important skills that I will be requiring in the long run. This is because there are
emergencies in each and every business scenario. These emergencies have to be dealt with by
taking immediate actions. I have to gain more confidences that I can take apt decisions and
most importantly the right decision to cope up with these uncertain situations. However, I have
seen that I become much tensed and afraid while taking any important decision. I feel very
restless and cannot really take a strong stand fearing the after effects.

5. Self-Regulation
Now that you have set your goal (standard), you will need to regulate your behavior in order
to reach it. The next step to achieving your standard is monitoring. Outline how you are
going to monitor your progress (you may wish to include a diagram or other method you will

I will be maintaining a daily track record of my progress. I will also make an action plan and
make sure to follow it throughout. I will also take feedback from my friends and colleagues
regarding the changes in my behavior. This will be one of the most successful means of
monitoring my progress.

I feel that my introvert nature was a big issue in the path of attaining this goal. In the initial
stages of my career, I have to take the valuable tips from others so that I can take the right
decision at the right time. Apart from this, my restless nature and an angry temperament
also obstructed the way of attaining this goal.

GRIT by Angela Duckworth has really been very helpful for setting and the goal and also for
striving to achieve it. This is because, in the initial stages, I was very afraid of the obstacles
that would come my way. I am of a very introvert nature and I do not really have the habit of
opening up with many people. This is one of the major issues in the attaining my goal. My
goal is improving the decision making skill and in order to achieve this goal I need to take the
opinion of many of my colleagues. Taking the opinion of others is very helpful as this will help
in getting the valuable ideas for taking the right decision within the right time. One of the
important actions that I thought of taking for attaining this goal is narrowing the amounts of

options available to me. In order to do this, I had to first take the opinion of others in order to
know which options to keep and which to keep out of my list. This was becoming one of the
major problems in my way as I was really very hesitant in talking to others. I was also finding
it tough to narrow down the options. I was getting discouraged and I also started feeling very
restless while taking any kinds of decisions. I felt that I will never be able to overcome these
problems.
However, after going through the concept of GRIT, I came to know that there will be many
obstacles within the path and I will have to overcome them. The greatness lies not in giving
up but in facing these challenges and turning them into a good opportunity. I learned that I
have to keep up and maintain my perseverance and the passion for winning over this goal. I
learned that I have to stick to this goal no matter whatever the obstacles are. I did not lose
hope and made up my mind that I will have to attain this goal. I undertook huge research in
order to limit the number of options. While doing an internship with a company I had to
make a decision about setting the interview criteria and the promotion criteria as well. I had
to make a choice whether to hire employees from within the internal employees, hire fresh
employees or simple shuffle employees from one branch to the other. This was really a very
tough decision and I was finding myself in trouble. However, I maintained my perseverance
and I did not give up. I made up my mind to give in double effort rather than just escaping
the situation or giving up. Though I knew that my problem-solving skills were good I had to
nurture them more. So, I called for board meetings and I suggested that we must give up so
many options for avoiding confusions. The only option that we must focus on is to appoint
new and fresh employees. This will help in focussing on a particular area rather than looking
after so many different areas. I had to take the feedback and the votes of all the employees
before finalizing this method. In order to do this, I had to talk to so many different people. I
found it tough but at the same time, I did not lose hope. I kept on sticking to my goal and I
knew that I have to strengthen my decision-making skills anyhow. I knew that I have to
undergo many frustrations and also make many sacrifices as well. I sacrificed going out with
friends and families and worked on developing my decision-making skills.
