Face to face communication is an important skill for any nursing practitioner, especially
when admitting patients in endoscopy who are having a gastroscopy procedure. Such patients
have special needs that require critical face to face communication skills when handling them.
The ability to provide for patients is improved especially individualized care when the
practitioner has good communication skills (Kourkouta & Papathanassiou 2014, p. 65). With
face to face communication, as a practitioner it increases patient feelings of love, safety, and
confidence which lead to increased outcomes. McCarthy, Buckley, Engel, Forth, Adams &
Cameron (2013, p. 443) suggest that since nurses are care providers and the link between
different practitioners like physicians and doctors, I require face to face communication when
dealing with both the patient and other providers in endoscopy department.
Since endoscopy patients are admitted with different healthcare needs, then interpersonal,
intellectual, confidence and technical skills are important in this sector. As a practitioner, I not
only interact with the patient but also family members who lack nursing knowledge. This means
that I require more than speaking but rather other enhanced abilities like reading body language
when interacting with such individuals (Kourkouta & Papathanassiou 2014, p. 66). The
deficiency that I have in this skill needs to be improved to achieve better nursing outcomes for
the patient, the family and for myself as a practitioner. As a second-year student, this skill goes a
long way in improving my abilities and ensuring that I become a better nursing practitioner with
the ability to relate well within the section that I work in.
