When you are ready to submit your assessments, upload the files in OpenSpace
using the Assessment Upload links in the relevant Study Period of your course.
Your assessment must be uploaded in Word Format to allow feedback to be
written in the Office use only – Assessors feedback box provided under each
question. Assessments that are submitted in a different format will be deemed a
“Submission Error” & returned.
It is important that you keep a copy of all electronic assessments submitted to
Open Colleges.

Introduction
Note: you will need to complete additional assessments as you progress through
your course to demonstrate competence for all aspects of the unit.
This assessment has been designed to provide evidence of the ability to:
Perform setting out, measuring techniques and associated calculations.
Set up and use levelling devices.
Mark out and determine levels on a grid for contouring and volume
calculations.
Construct longitudinal sections and determine associated grades and
levels in typical drainage and pipeline situations.
Instructions
For this assessment you will need to access a site, carry out a levelling operation
and calculations, and
There are four parts to this assessment:
Part A: Simulated closed level runs
Part B: Simulated two-peg test
Part C: Conduct a grid survey for contouring
Part D: Develop a longitudinal section from contour lines to determine the
grade
Read the scenario below and follow the assessment instructions that follow.
Scenario
You are just about to start a new residential building project for Sullivon
Constructions. The surveyor has done some basic site set-out, established some
site boundary marks and a site benchmark. As the new site supervisor
(foreperson) you need to prepare some additional site survey and set-out
documents and calculations to the management of Sullivon Constructions.
To prepare your documents, complete the following site-survey and set out
procedures in Parts A, B, C and D below.
Part A: Simulated closed level runs
Because you are the new site supervisor (foreperson), you don’t want to make
any mistakes,
So, this exercise is to practice your levelling calculations before you go on the
job tomorrow. To prepare yourself, watch the videos from the learning material

about the two methods for calculating level readings:
Rise and fall and
Height of
Collimation. Also practice your running chainage calculations.
Your task
The following diagram shows a longitudinal section showing site level readings to
calculate the cut and fill for a site for drainage purposes. The benchmark (BM) for
this exercise is: RL 50.000 (point ‘B’).
Review the readings shown in the diagram and respond to the tasks that follow:

i) Based on the diagram above, complete either the
rise and fall level book
or the
height of collimation level book using the table templates below.

Part B: Simulated two-peg test
To begin the site survey, you have been asked to conduct a two-peg test with an
automatic level by your supervisor at Sullivon Constructions. The readings
obtained from your two-peg test are detailed in the diagram below.
Respond to the questions that follow regarding your two-peg test.

To refresh your memory about conducting a two peg test, refer to the
instructional video in the module.
I. Give a brief description of how to conduct a two-peg test? (maximum 100
words)
TWO PEG TEST
First step after arriving at the construction site, all the levelling instruments are subject to
error therefore checking of instrument is done, in this case the level, and this is essential
Conduct a test to check on to check on the viability of the level through the us
Two pegs. This must be done to ensure that the instrument is in perfect condition for
levelling before commencement
Assemble all the necessary equipment for the test, these instruments include tripod, tapes
of 50 meters, staff, spray, pen, paper and calculator
Steps;
First establish the two points and mark in the data sheet A and B at approximate distance
of 45 meters apart on the level ground, place level staffs in each points and then station
the level at a desistance, half way the two points
Then take and record on both pegs and find the difference in elevation
Move the level as close as possible to either of the peg, approximately 5 meters. Record
the two staff readings again
Then if the differenced in the two staffs are same then the level of the ground is okay and
if not the instrument requires service.
Office use only – Assessors feedback
II. What would be considered an acceptable amount for a level to be out of
calibration? (maximum 20 words)
The amount should be minimal such that there is no error in the calibration of
the equipment. That is the difference between differences should be zero for
perfect device
Office use only – Assessors feedback
III. Give a brief description of how to set up one type of levelling device?
(maximum 100 words)
Setting up Automatic level
Consider setting up an Automatic level
