The aim of this report is to develop the learner as a reflective practitioner in the field of
emergency Medical Care. It aims to foster critical thinking and reflection of one’s practice
and the practice of the discipline of Emergency Medical Care. Ultimately it serves to
promote the development of cognitive tools that graduates practitioners with the ability
learn from their own practice. This may progressively entrench the attitude of life-long
learning. This reflective report is intended for the learner to document and present the
occurrence of learning in the“Virtual Online Scenario Simulation” or“Work Place”.
Learning may occur in a topic which is covered in the formal curriculum or in a topic or area
which isnot covered in the formal curriculum. It may be a clinical event or case, or may be a
non-clinical occurrence in the work place.
Nospecificwriting
styleisrecommendednorexpected,andthereisnoneedtowriteinthethirdpersonasisusual for
academic submissions. The point of the exercise is for you to insert yourself into the
narrative, and for that reason you are encouraged to use words like “I’ and “we”. You may
free-write to a large extent, and the emphasis is less on grammar than on expression,
however the narrative needs to be coherent, cogent and unambiguous; so don’t abandon
grammar and spelling rules. To allow you as much space as is necessary to express yourself,
and to represent your reflection process. Other people should understand the meaning
without becoming frustrated during the reading, thus marks are taken away if the reflective
report was prematurely ‘cut short’ or if the same result could have been achieved in a
shorterpiece.
Don’t ramble on and don’t be too abrupt.
While the writing style is open to your interpretation, please use the provided format
(Gibbs reflective cycle) as a framework for your writing and the representation of your
learning.
The marking rubric is provided in order to help you structure your content. Please read
the description of each section provided (Red) in conjunction with the description in the
rubric. You need to then link the description with prior experience, knowledge, literature
and theory to create alternate perspectives from it. You need to show that your thinking
and/or perspective has changed i.e. that learning has occurred.

This reflective report uses Gibbs’ reflective cycle and should be completed in the following
headings.
DESCRIPTIONWrite a short narrative of the case, outlining the events as they occurred. Do not make judgments
or evaluations. A short factual account of events. (Maximum 250 words)(May use DMIST format)
The case is about the 59 years old male admitted with complaints of shortness of breath. He has
a medical history of hypertension and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder. On admission, the
saturation was 84% on room air with shortness of breath. He was started on oxygen therapy with
6liters oxygen. Two nurses attending the case on the supervision of the physician. The nurses
increased the oxygen to 7liters. As the patient was had breathing difficulty he was started with
nebulization therapy with 15gm of albuterol. The nurses changed the oxygen mask to ensure
optimal oxygen supply and breathing. The saturation level was reduced to 82% even with oxygen
therapy so the nurse decided to intubate the patient. Intubation was done by the nurses under
the supervision of the physician.
FEELINGSWrite on how you acknowledge your emotional state before, at the start of and during the case. How
did you feel at the time? How did you react and what influence may it have had on your performance?
(Maximum 100 words).
I was feeling confused and worried as the patient's condition was deteriorating. Before the situation, I
was unclear about the prioritization of nursing care (Eckerblad et al. 2014). I don’t know how to start
the care and the actual need of the patient. After, the care I understood the prioritization of nursing
care for the clinically deteriorating patient. The other people in the situation were supportive and
believed that the situation is under control. Other people in the situation feel that the nurses caring for
the patient were efficient. Before the situation, I thought that the decision making in an emergency is
a difficult task. During the situation, I learned to implement the theory into practice. The situation was
a good experience which has improved critical thinking and clinical skill.
EVALUATIONWrite a brief description of what medical intervention was conducted. Describe what went well and what
went poorly. Link the various aspects of the case together and as well as the actions they took and work
out why the events took place and why they acted as they did. Lay out your train of thought and
