The aim of this report is to develop the learner as a reflective practitioner in the field of
emergency Medical Care. It aims to foster critical thinking and reflection of one’s practice
and the practice of the discipline of Emergency Medical Care. Ultimately it serves to
promote the development of cognitive tools that graduates practitioners with the ability
learn from their own practice. This may progressively entrench the attitude of life-long
learning. This reflective report is intended for the learner to document and present the
occurrence of learning in the “Virtual Online Scenario Simulation” or “Work Place”.
Learning may occur in a topic which is covered in the formal curriculum or in a topic or area
which is not covered in the formal curriculum. It may be a clinical event or case, or may be
a non-clinical occurrence in the work place.
No specific writing style is recommended nor expected, and there is no need to write in the
third person as is usual for academic submissions. The point of the exercise is for you to
insert yourself into the narrative, and for that reason you are encouraged to use words like
“I’ and “we”. You may free-write to a large extent, and the emphasis is less on grammar
than on expression, however the narrative needs to be coherent, cogent and unambiguous;
so don’t abandon grammar and spelling rules. To allow you as much space as is necessary
to express yourself, and to represent your reflection process. Other people should
understand the meaning without becoming frustrated during the reading, thus marks are
taken away if the reflective report was prematurely ‘cut short’ or if the same result could
have been achieved in a shorter piece.
Don’t ramble on and don’t be too abrupt.
While the writing style is open to your interpretation, please use the provided format
(Gibbs reflective cycle) as a framework for your writing and the representation of your
learning.
The marking rubric is provided in order to help you structure your content. Please read
the description of each section provided (Red) in conjunction with the description in the
rubric. You need to then link the description with prior experience, knowledge, literature
and theory to create alternate perspectives from it. You need to show that your thinking
and/or perspective has changed i.e. that learning has occurred.
